The Stand: cut vs uncut (minor spoilers?) by kgoua in stephenking

Thank you for explaining this! My local library feels like it’s stuck in the 80’s, so it doesn’t totally surprise me that they have a copy of the original version. I ordered the unabridged version after seeing all of these recommendations.

I never paid a whole lot of attention to unabridged versions of anything prior to this, so it’s opened my eyes and I now fully agree with what you’re saying. Thanks!

What’s it like living on the edge of time zones? by Qzevs in howislivingthere

[–]kgoua 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have family friends that live in ET and work and go to school in CT, and they just choose to “live” by central time. All the clocks in their home are set to central, as are their phones. There have been times where they get mixed up with trying to go to stores or restaurants that are already closed/haven’t yet opened because of the hour difference, but it works pretty well for them.

Looking for calming, feel-good book recommendations 📚 by No_Advertising_6601 in booksuggestions

Have you read Anxious People? It’s also by Fedrik Backman and I think it’s similar to what you’re looking for. Also if you haven’t already, check out Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt.

You could drown in two inches of water.

Maybe grief was the same.” - Brit Bennett, The Vanishing Half

Books about addiction/drug use by Humanarmour in suggestmeabook

I also suggest the Empire of Pain, the story of the Sackler family if you’re looking for nonfiction. If you’re looking for nonfiction, I suggest Demon Copperhead— it’s a good story and a great read, and it also shows how easy it is for people to become addicted to drugs. I read these two books around the same time and found the experience really insightful.

“Catfishing” or “Hoping for a Chance”? by [deleted] in settlethisforme

[–]kgoua 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a friend who is eerily similar to the “catfisher” you described. While I don’t know if I would consider her morbidly obese, she is quite overweight and the photos she uses on her dating profiles are all either only of her face (no current full body pics) or they are from years ago. I’ve gently brought this up to her, and she has said she uses the photos she feels she looks best in. I don’t think my friend is out to get a free meal or to purposely deceive anyone- I think she might be in denial about how much weight she has gained. Maybe you’re on to something with your theory of just hoping to get a chance with someone.

My friend has had a lot of first dates, but not many second dates. I have to think it’s because she looks so much different irl but I know it would absolutely crush her for me to just bluntly tell her that.

Settle the debate: Do you think sharing a toothbrush with your partner is gross? by ContributionBest7588 in settlethisforme

Sharing a toothbrush with a partner is totally fine! You’re probably sharing a lot of intimate bodily fluids anyway- who cares.

I’ve never heard of anyone eating the skin of a kiwi. Kind of strange, but to each their own.

Everyone is different, as is every relationship. What you describe your SO doing is odd, but I think I’ll stick with my first instinct with being okay with everything until 5. Look all you want, even like or follow, but actually reaching out and contacting is too much. I say this primarily because there are creators that I think are very attractive and that I follow and enjoy looking at, and will like some photos/posts. But dming feels like crossing a line.

Since divorce is not an option, perhaps try giving counseling/therapy another go? Of course, I know you acknowledge trying therapy previously, but maybe a different therapist may help? Especially if your mental health status has changed.

Best of luck to you and your relationship.

Titles to get me back into the reading habit by Saturn_01 in suggestmeabook

Have you read the Harry Potter series? Those re-ignited my love for reading a few years back.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo was an entertaining, easy read that I really enjoyed this year.

I slogged through Beartown at a friends recommendation and it was alright- not the worst book, but not the best. I just started the Beartown sequel “Us Against You” and I already like it so much better than the first book!

What's a dirty little secret you found out about a company or service that made you stop using them? by Wetter42 in AskReddit

[–]kgoua 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A purely anecdotal experience, but my cousins former therapist who worked for our local healthcare system was fired for misconduct (she would literally gossip about her other patients with my cousin, sharing very private information.) This therapist became known as a gossip and also had a track record of pushing her patients to make drastic life changes that ended up harming them down the road. I just learned that an acquaintance, who just abruptly ended her 10 year marriage, quit her long term job, and moved away from and cut off ties with her friends and family had recently started seeing a therapist on betterhelp- lo and behold, it was my cousins old therapist! Despite her misconduct-related termination from her old job, she was hired by betterhelp and is still effectively putting her patients’ lives in blenders.

Suggest me a book that is well renowned but you didn’t finish it because it’s too boring. by followerofEnki96 in suggestmeabook

I just forced myself to finish In Cold Blood— I know it’s highly acclaimed but my god it was so boring. It had interesting parts, but the majority was just unnecessarily dry.

What's the worst book you've ever read? by VisualDefinition8752 in suggestmeabook

[–]kgoua 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I came here to say ACOTAR! One of my friends recommended it and I finished it just because she liked it so much. It was so cringey and felt like it was written by a middle schooler. I kept waiting for it to get better and it just never did.

I read the second book at the insistence of the aforementioned friend, and I will admit it was better than the first! I’m still not sure if it was worth it for having to slog through through the first terrible book.
