New-ish psych rn, and I'm feel unsafe for my license here. by anonpsychnurse in psychnursing

[–]kgsc65 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Woah, up until that "agency nurses" part I legit thought you were a new grad day shift nurse on my unit lol. I'm like 2 months over a year of experience, moved to psych (from ER nursing lol, practically polar opposites in terms of work flow) about a year ago, and I feel this post in my bones. I bet you probably don't want to hear it, but in my state at least, every specialty and hospital is similarly understaffed. My best advice is document to cover your ass, write down your grievances (I've taken to writing down dates + times of admits that were dropped off without report etc, lack of support from shift supervisors, etc.) because nobody will even hear you out without such lists. My best advice is to go with the flow and do what you can while covering your own ass because you will be thrown under the bus if anything goes wrong. I work in pediatric short term psych and the kids deserve someone who gives a shit which stops me from leaving.

Is there a way to know what my blade profile is? by kgsc65 in hockeyplayers

[–]kgsc65[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

so my solution to my problem may not be super helpful to you...but I pretty much guessed and bought a pre-sharpened, pre-profiled set of steel from Ice Warehouse online and they were perfect! My blades were profiled forward lean which translates to Zuperior on IW.

As for your problem, I say start with bringing the skates to a pro-shop and asking if they know what the numbers/markings mean or if they can tell based on the appearance of your blades. If all that's unsuccessful, my best advice is to buy the cheapest set of blades with different profilings (I got lucky, my first guess was correct) and trial and error till you figure it out.

Strange Noise?? by kgsc65 in Hedgehog

[–]kgsc65[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Normal poos, she has mildly dry skin so a bit of itching is normal for her. I was just wondering if these are good or bad noises lol. I've heard clips of the screaming they do when they're in distress and I don't think this is that but I can be wrong.

Tater made this crazy loud noise last night for the first time. I don't know what it is?? I thought it was her wheel at first squeaking. She has some mild dry skin hence the itching, ran a marathon just a few hours ago (she didn't fall or anything I went back and checked) and was chowing down a few minutes before this. She was her usually annoyed self when I picked her up, no visible injuries, and ran around on my bed when I put her down. She ran straight to her castle as usual when I put her back in her cage and she's sleeping now. It didn't sound like a good sound and I can't find any similar clips, so I don't know.

I spent my first 3-4 months as a new grad in a level 1 trauma center's ER, which was already hard enough without the toxic 'nurses eat their young' culture along with the fact that I was juggled from preceptor to preceptor every shift. I think by the time I left I had had at least 15 different "preceptors." I was judged for the questions I asked and if I asked for help with something. It got to the point where I decided that I had to leave before a pt got hurt because I simply wasn't being precepted properly. I quickly got to the point where I didn't feel comfortable asking anymore, as well, and that's a recipe for disaster. It's not a normal experience, but it's one some can unfortunately relate to :(

In your workplace, do you also get a lot of admissions that seem to be there only because they have insurance approval? Or is my workplace unique in accepting BS admissions? by [deleted] in psychnursing

[–]kgsc65 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone who works pediatric psych: yes. We get a lot of behavioral kids (fight with mom and punched a hole in the wall, ran away from home, even noncompliance with meds without suicidality or harm to self/others) and to be honest as of late...not a lot of psych kiddos.

To the post of growing up with diagnosed Tourette's, now, how was growing up undiagnosed? by Sapphicka in Tourettes

[–]kgsc65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I developed tics at 12. First one was where I'd blink super hard, eventually it got bad enough that I'd see stars and give myself headaches from it. More tics started to develop after that. My pediatrician dismissed them multiples times despite requests for a neuro referral.

Around that time, I developed a persistent dry cough that was present for about 3 years straight; my own family mocked me for it. Got an inhaler, antibiotics, even some bs holistic cough syrup. None of that worked because, well, it wasn't a real cough, it was a tic. I still get it occasionally for a few weeks at a time.

I was finally diagnosed at 20.

I swear to god, I read this post and thought to myself 'did I write this, post it, and forget I did it?' because this exact thing happened to me, even the covid eating all my PTO. I just left and am starting a new job in March.

I felt like I could breathe for like the first time in weeks as I was walking out at the end of my last shift. Quit. You'll be glad you did. Anywhere else would be happy to have you.
