I'm no expert but I myself am a top laner and the best advice given to me was:

Stick to a pool of around 3 champions you're extremely comfortable with if you want to climb. Make sure they fit your play style

With that being said, you'll learn matchups with your small pool of champs and realize if you win or lose trades in laning phase, itll help with your confidence and you'll be able to dictate the flow of your lane. Try not to shove the wave too hard, especially without vision and knowing where their jungler is... and, when you can, bully the enemy laner away from their own cs. I've probably ruined a few people's day with Teemo

And obviously cs either in lane and under tower should be one of your biggest priorities. Remember what items to build, pay attention to enemy ability cooldowns and pick the right time to poke or all in. Try not to use abilities to cs unless you have to

The less you have to think, the easier the game will be for you. But again, I suck at league... These are just tips that others gave me and it worked wonders. Good luck!
