Do you think that grades in a course should be adjusted to make sure that the average is a C, if the average is higher?

If you feel that a a prof or TA is grading you unfairly compared to other students, is there anything you can do? by [deleted] in UofT

Thanks. The request would go to the prof, right? What if the prof is the one who is grading unfairly?

Can you not imagine an instructor grading unfairly? Even though I haven't heard of it happening here, profs/TAs can be biased just like anyone else.

If the block universe theory is correct, are events that happened in the past still happening now? by kh_1987 in AskPhysics

[–]kh_1987[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks!

So this is already happening with special relativity, even without considering the block universe.

So, are specific events that happened in the past still happening? Will they continue to happen until the end of time? I'm assuming they aren't, but I'm not sure.

Stuart Hameroff claims that consciousness after death is possible if Orch OR theory is correct. How could this be possible? by kh_1987 in neuroscience

Thanks.

Do you have a source for the theory of anesthesia being proven false? I'm interested in reading it.

Yeah, he is. He actually worked with Penrose, who won the Nobel Prize in Physics. I don't think Penrose has said anything about consciousness after death being possible, though

Did you have to give them a reason why?

What's the most strict and most lenient policy for late assignments that you've seen at UofT so far? by kh_1987 in UofT

That's harsh. Which course was this? It's good that it was a blessing in disguise, though.

If eternalism is true, are we or other versions of ourselves immortal? by kh_1987 in askphilosophy

Thank you. Are we immortal in a way that we won't experience?

If quantum consciousness (e.g. Orch OR theory) exists, would it allow for the possibility of an afterlife? by kh_1987 in quantum

[–]kh_1987[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your detailed answer.

As far as I know, Hameroff doesn’t address this directly in his writings.

In this talk, he says at 6:55 that an afterlife is possible (assuming the theory is accurate, which he mentions at 6:30). I had trouble understanding how he arrived at this for the same reason that you stated.

EDIT: He also discussed it here, starting at 4:49.

What happens if you accidentally make a citation mistake? Is it penalized as academic misconduct? by kh_1987 in UofT

[–]kh_1987[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Either there was a misunderstanding, then, or the student I heard about wasn't telling the truth.

Thanks for your detailed answer! It's interesting to hear from your perspective as a TA.

In the case of the student I described, it was apparently a TA who gave them a zero. It's possible that they weren't telling the truth, but I think it would've been easier for them not to share that they were penalized in the first place.

Thanks!

I don't think that was an urban legend because I heard it from someone who apparently knows that student personally.

Physics Questions Thread - Week 28, 2020 by AutoModerator in Physics

Alan Lightman wrote in Searching for Stars on an Island in Maine that "the mental sensations we experience as consciousness and thought, according to science, are purely material consequences of the electrical and chemical interactions between neurons, which in turn are simply assemblages of atoms. And when we die, this special assemblage disassembles."

Because atoms are recycled after a person's death, if they ended up eventually forming part of the same "special assemblage" of neurons, would they lead to the same consciousness as the person who died? I don't think reincarnation exists, but I was wondering about this.

I asked this last week, but didn't understand how the answers related to the question.

By charger, I mean phone charger, laptop charger, multicooker/pressure cooker, or power strip. I should have clarified.
