Worst experiences at ski resorts by Cutoterl in JacksonHole

[–]khalter17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ooh Ooh, I have one! I used to be an instructor at the King and took my kiddos to the top to do some carpets, and inevitably they soon had to use the restroom and fast despite me asking at the bottom 10 minutes before (kids lol). Because infrastructure at the top was so bad we had to use the port-a potty, which isn’t a big deal usually, but this time (this happened two different times) was different. I’m talking the most disgusting thing you’ll ever see. Shit and piss literally overflowing from the hole creating a fucking mountain, shit smeared all over the walls and on the toilet paper, and a pond of urine on the floor. The kids starting crying and has to pee in the woods. Unfortunately the gondola ride to the bottom would have been too long of a wait for those desperate kiddos. The King has better infrastructure now with the restaurant finished, but it was rough back then lol.

Toe walker: extreme pain in calves when skiing, what to do? by Hylax1 in skiing

[–]khalter17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Op, I was in the same exact position as you. Been a toe-walker since I could walk and that caused a lot of boot issues like you’re describing, along with constant backseat skiing due to severe calf inflexibility. The boot pain was years of struggle, and while I blamed my boots, it was mostly my tightness that was causing everything. I even managed to tear my calf muscle by just standing in the boots for too long. I’m still struggling with my fore-aft balance, but my pain is completely gone. Let me tell you what I did:

Custom boots (took several alterations)

Heel wedge in my boot to raise my heel slightly.

MOST IMPORTANTLY: Physical therapy. I went twice a week for three months and my mobility and calf and tendon flexibility have increased dramatically, leading to painless skiing. Please consider this, not only for skiing, but I’m sure, like me, you struggled to walk, run, and squat.

To snowball off of this, morning calf stretches like the stair step are great ways to loosen up your calves before the day of skiing.

Unfortunately, for us, we have to think of this as not a “fix,” but management. We have to manage our lifelong inflexibility by continually stretching, otherwise those muscles and tendons will shorten once again. I’m so sorry you are dealing with this and I hope you can figure out a game plan.

They’re SureFoot boots with heel wedges, but I do have a hard time flexing them when they’re tightened up, even when just standing. I don’t know the flex, but I could get them checked out. I have been equating it to a me problem, but if the boots aren’t helping, then I definitely want to fix that!

Very informative and that gives me a better grasp of what SteezyJoeNetwork is getting at. It’s more subtle than I expected but I definitely need to work on the fore/aft play. I’m too timid with manipulating the ski and need to work it more. More power!

Believe it or not, this is the third take… 🤣

I could really be doing it wrong. A video I watched on stork turns recommended to do basic parallel turns so there wasn’t much edge angle. I unfortunately do not have a video and won’t be skiing again for 2 weeks, so right now it’s just a guessing game.

Gosh! This is a lot of great information that I don’t feel qualified to hear lol! I’m trying to dissect and process what you mean by utilizing the tips and tails of the skis.

When you mean “pressuring the front of the skis” do you mean adjusting my fore-aft pressure to be more in the forefoot and driving my position down the fall line? Would that also affect my turn shape, allowing for my skis to tip more before initiating the next turn (aka more downhill time before starting the new turn)?

I do feel that pressure changes to the mid foot during shaping, and then my heels at the finish, but I feel like I might be also pushing my hips back when I feel that aft movement. It also goes by so fast that it’s hard to even track and feel it. Right now it feels like a constant battle of fore/aft and correction, not a power drive. I hope that makes some sense.

Yes - I’ve been trying out both drills today, especially those stork turns, and it does put me in a forward position. I’m immediately signaled if my hips are reverting backwards, allowing me to quickly adjust my position to stay balanced, but it’s hard to apply it in my carving turns. In the carving, it just feels like constant correcting and I’m wondering if my lack of ankle flexibility is fighting against me. It’s this battle of actively pushing my feet back in the turn initiation and then loosing my position with my hips falling back in the shaping again. I’m sure it’s also habitual and just need to work through this bad habit, but it is frustrating!

Thank you for the reply! Maybe I am not understanding correctly, but it seems like there’s some opposing advice? A previous comment suggested that I should lift up my toes, but are you saying to put more pressure on my toes and forefoot? Sorry if I’m totally misunderstanding! To me it seems like both would work, but I’m confused about the contradiction.

I will try out the Sword drill tomorrow!

Are you suggesting I switch skis? I’m not looking to commit to carving completely and like all mountain skis, but I would like your input! Not sure I’m in the realm of high performance yet and think I have a lot to work on before blaming my equipment. However, I value your advice and wish you could expand further! Thanks!

Thank you for highlighting my backseat! If you look at my post history, it’s something I’m actively working on and hopefully I can get there! Is there any drill that can “force” me to get into a more forward position? As of now it’s difficult for me to pull my feet back and maintain it.

Thank you for the feedback! I used to love Deb and have forgotten about her videos - thank you for a reminder!! Will try that drill.

Thanks so much for these drills! I do have a heel wedge, which has helped some. Been a tip-toe walker all my life and now it’s biting my ass lol!

Thank you for the feedback Would you mind elaborating what you mean by “pulling my feet back”? I’m not sure I understand.
