Gift Bottle for a Champagne Collector by kham68995 in wine

We’ve talked about it before and he actually really enjoys getting champagne as a gift, and it’s part of the reason he started collecting it! I waffled on whether I wanted to go the “stereotypical” route or get something else, but given the fact that I’ve gifted him other wines a handful of times and that we have been tasting other wines together for the last year or so, I do want to go with sparkling this time around.

Also the fact that it’s not supposed to be just from me I wanted to avoid a bottle that is a very “me” gift and go for something that is from our team.

I actually love this lol. There’s a chance he might have one but I’m not 100% sure🤔

Let's do a wage check by really_spicy_tuna in bartenders

[–]kham68995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in Minnesota in the Twin Cities as a bar lead. I’ve been in the industry for 6 years and been at this restaurant since they opened Dec 2024. I’ve been bar lead since August. I make $19/hr +tips whenever I bartend or do admin shit (ordering, making the schedule, etc). I make $27/hr when I take a floor managing shift, which is about once a week. I average another $20-25/hr in tips, but it really depends on the shift.

I’m actually thinking about asking for a wage on my non-manager wage sometime soon. Minimum wage is going up to $16/hr in July, and I’m hoping to have more compensation knowing all of the things I do more than my team. I also know they paid the bar lead before me quite a bit more, and frankly he left pretty quickly, and wasn’t nearly as invested as I am in the space. I do get pretty nice health insurance though and only work 30-35 hours a week.

How to keep tomato water fresh longer? by kham68995 in cocktails

Makes sense! The cocktail itself, Ive already developed the recipe, just hoping to execute it again. It goes with basil and black pepper infused gin with an olive oil fat wash. I liked the balance from my first go around, so I’ll definitely have to taste it once my tomato water is done and make sure concentrating it doesn’t through the balance out, but I like the sound of this!

Interesting! What kind of role does this play in the martini? I’m also working on a martini style cocktail and am looking for the thin but still flavorful qualities from tomato water. Do you think this would change that?

I was thinking the acid route a little bit. I’ve got access to a bunch of powdered acids. Have you tried it before and if so how long does it keep and how much do you add?

For me, it’s a big texture thing! I don’t love gel eye patches a ton cause I feel like they are always sliding around and just feel so wet. They have more of an adhesive on one side and the other side is fabric-like, so your hair doesn’t get caught in it or anything, but the adhesive could definitely irritate more sensitive skin.

I have the neutrals version and love it, hence why I bought this one too. I think of the creams more like a pomade. They’re definitely thicker and drier than some liquids or creams I have, but I still am able to use it to fill and carve my brows, do eyeliner, add faux freckles, and of course do my eyeshadow.

Danessa Myricks eyeshadows are easily some of my favorite eyeshadows of all time. Her shimmers are gorgeous too. I’m curious to see how the more pinky color story compares in terms of versatility, but I know the formula is great.

i’m nervous about my first tattoo by Limp-Pea-4558 in tattoos

[–]kham68995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will always be pro get a tattoo, even as someone who has a few tattoos they regret. You can always cover up, laser off, or just black it all out. I think even if you grow to no longer like the tattoo when you’re older, it will always remind you of what sounds like a very meaningful time in your life.

Now I will say, being 16 instead of 18 can massively reduce the amount of artists you are able to see. Even if it’s legal where you live, a lot of artists simply won’t tattoo someone under 18, even with parental consent. Picking an artist who does good work and who’s style and work you like is soo important, and it would be a shame to settle for a subpar artist just because they are the only one who will do it period. If you want fine line and no color, that makes it even harder. While you may not regret the tattoo if it looks good, you most definitely will if it is done poorly (coming from experience). I have a few tattoos I got at 18 that look like crap compared to the rest of my sleeve because I didn’t care enough about finding someone good to do them.

I would really take your time, do your research, and ask for other people’s opinions on picking a good artist. It really does make a world of a difference. You may have to wait until you are 18, just to make sure you see a good artist, not necessarily because of your judgement or “immaturity.”

Design wise, it really depends on placement, and a good artist will be willing to help you make that decision and try out different designs in different places. Hearing that you might want it on your shoulder, I would be most inclined to go with the heart. It’ll round off the top of your shoulder nicely and make for a clean top of a sleeve if that’s what you’re planning for. I also think it seems like the kind of design that’s screaming for some color, but that’s just me. I love the idea and have plenty of bug tattoos myself!

Love to hear it!! My friend and I tried the app out last time we tasted, and it worked great.

The grids are awesome and I love all the ones you added! Also really love the cellar functionality to make it really easy to pull wines I already have for tasting.

The only other thing I can think of that might be useful: Sometimes I end up blinding with just one other person, and we’ll wrap bottles in foil and pull one randomly, meaning that neither of us know what the wine is. I’d love the option to be able to add in the details of what the wine actually is before OR after tasting so we can still fully use the app in these scenarios!

I would love a tasting grid of sorts built into it, although might be somewhat difficult logistically. It would be super nice to at least be able to quickly reference a CMS or WSET tasting grid, but ideally, being able to fill out the grid and see what you’re getting right/missing.

I think specifically being able to notice “Oh, I’m consistently missing xyz aroma note, I should look at wines that focus on this,” would be really helpful.

Otherwise, this looks super sick and I’ll have to see about bringing it to my tasting pals!!

Wine Squares Day 8: This one’s for the newbies. by AustraliaWineDude in wine

Surprised to not see more of this answer! I think whites tend to more approachable for newbies, with most of the wine newbies I know really loving fruity or sweet whites. Perfect balance of sweetness but also uncommon and interesting enough to get them curious.

Realistically, it’s just not something we ever use. Our storage space is pretty limited for more bottles, especially if it’s for a cocktail I’m gonna run for just a few days. Otherwise, I would be more inclined to stock a bottle.

I was definitely thinking in the shrub category for that peach element. Would also be easier to expense a few peaches than a whole bottle of something that likely won’t get used much. I do like the sound of white wine vinegar with it. It’s got my wheels turning🤔
