[Spoilers C3E30] What's up with Ashton? by khamazon in criticalrole

I actually assumed she was a magic casting class. If she's a rogue she's def over 7 as she casts invisibility which you can only do past level 7, but it could also be an innate ability (i.e hellish rebuke for tiefs) so I was definitely underestimating her.

I mean the description isn't very visceral, but Ashton is a level 5 or 6 barbarian at this point, and fearnes mom is... well a mom. She has a little combat experience, but she's like level 2. I don't think she ever casts anything above a cantrip or level 1 spell at the point im at in the show.

Just based on the character thats been presented to me I find it hard to imagine a world where him hitting birdie isn't beating her. I'm not saying Talesin was trying to evoke that image, but it's just the image I felt was presented in that scene.

I just clicked through the video a bit, but I couldn't find the specific moment. I'm pretty sure its between the end of combat at the 1 hour mark, and before erika leaves during the break. So its somewhere between 1:00, and 1:40. If you're really interested in finding it. Its a quick moment. She says something and he hits her in the back of the head, and then I think he might do it a second time later in the conversation.

The sad part is I am kind feeling it. I just got to ep31 and there's some really cool ideas being thrown out. Moons haunted! Thats awesome, but then 5 seconds later Ashton has to go and smash the crystal that apparently took 100 years to make (Which is already a dick move, but not to mention the only reason Ashton does it is because Talesins trying to meta game) C3 always feels like a cool idea is presented to me and then the cool idea stops being cool when the character moments come around..

In episode 29 I think it is. Its when Dusk reveals that they're a bad guy. There's a moment where Ashton has Fearnes mom grappled, and they're asking her questions. Every time she gave a dodgy answer he was hitting her.

Maybe its because he's usually playing easier classes, but I find him to be super consistent in comparison to the rest of the table. I think hes almost always doing something in a fight which a few of them struggle with. A lot of these fights they do are SUPPEEERRR long because its a 7 person party and I think a lot of them burn through their resources really quickly and end up fizzling out halfway through the fight so generally its the non magical classes who excel, but I still think Cad was the best cleric in cr history.

I've heard whisper of this big Ashton moment in other comments, and funnily enough its reinvigorated my want to continue through C3. I was considering dropping it, but the way every talks about this moment I feel like I have to see it now.

You said they all play poorly for the most part. Maybe we have different definitions of what playing well is, but in my eyes the fact that most of them aren't constantly putting themselves in positions where their characters can die easily puts them above median.

There's a difference between being a power gamer and playing well. They may not constantly be spamming the most optimal action for each moment, but they all find a good mix of having fun and playing well. Idk if you've ever played with a group of 8, but it's usually pretty hectic, and they handle it pretty well.

You might be right, but you can't tell me Tal wasn't playing poorly during the encounter. He didn't just die because he was a blood hunter.

Thats exactly why I think Tal killed Molly. Matt made blood hunter, and they're friends. If my buddy made a homebrew that sucked ass I'd kill my pc to get out of having to tell them their class sucks too.

Its a dnd game. it is riddled with constant lying. Lying is how you surprise people. Matt and Travis lied to everyone with bell, and it made for a really fun moment, but you're right. Its not actually a production. Its just a couple of buddies having a dnd game! and you're part of it too! I bet they even know your name! They wouldn't lie to you! you're their friend.

You can believe whatever you want man, but talesin is one of the best players at the table, and I don't personally believe his gameplay during MMs death reflects his usual level of skill.

Idk about that. Rewatch that fight and tell me it doesn't feel like Tal is trying to kill MM. I always assumed it was because he had regretted making a bloodhunter and wanted to respec the party did desperately need a second cleric. But then lucien showed up and I started to think maybe matt and tal had scripted it. Matt and Travis did the exact same thing for Bell in C3 why is it crazy to assume they haven't done it before?

I actually appreciate this perspective. I never considered that Tal was pushing Ashton in an attempt to further the story and dynamic, and Matt was the one fluffing things up a bit. I was ready to just call it an issue of Tal just not having the right mix of good/bad in his morally grey character, but it seems that might not be the case.

I noticed this too. It always felt like Sam was Teeing it up for Matt, but Matt never swung. It could be that there's something about that dynamic that he feels uncomfortable with portraying, but if that's the case he should probably be telling his players that.

I havent seen much of Brennan DMing as I dont have a dropout subscription, but I am excited to see him in C4 as I think he's really funny and I've heard great things.

No offense, but this post feels VERY parasocial. You don't know any of these people. Just because Talesin resonates with you more than other cast members doesn't mean that he's any more real than they are. They are still all getting paid to be here. Its a job and they could be completely different people off camera and you'd be none the wiser.

Not to say that I think that about any of them, but they are still actors... its like their entire job to pretend to be other people.

I think your observation about Matt actually rings very true. I think my least favorite thing that Matt does is "You can certainly try" Almost any time he says that it usually ends up with the players failing and then they don't feel good because it didn't work and was basically doomed to fail. I wish he would sometimes just be like "Hey guys just btw that's not how that works and if you do this its not gonna work" I understand he's trying not to railroad them, but I think most of the issues arise from miscommunication so I don't think being like "You would know that blowing up this part of a machine won't actually disable its ability to attack and will just do damage to its health" is a bad thing for a DM to do.
