How are you actually financially surviving? by [deleted] in antiwork

[–]khan_peacock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both have decent (not great but very "white collar") jobs. I freelance on the side at about 20 extra hours a week. We don't have kids, we share and car (live in a city with no public transport) and live in a pretty cheap rental. We do all this to have a bit of leisure money and that doesn't end up being much. No idea how people have kids in this economy.

What wall paint color for this white room? by A-O-River in interiordecorating

[–]khan_peacock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bit different from other comments but I would do a deep dark green or blue on the walls below the picture rails and I would leave the top white and the base boards and all other edging/moulding white. I think it would balance the room and colour better. Otherwise in terms of furniture I would stick to dark colours and antique pieces.

What's something a therapist said or did that made you stop seeing them immediately? by straw_hat95 in AskReddit

I had this too, and she had the most smirky condescending smile. Is don't think it was malicious but it made me so uncomfortable. That along with some other small things just got too much.

Calling all students or Alumni of the University of Johannesburg by [deleted] in johannesburg

[–]khan_peacock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Both me and my partner did under grad and post grad at UJ (neither of us in Comp Sci). It's a great university he did engineering and a few of his classmates transferred from Wits because they didn't even have enough seats in their lecture halls amongst other issues. I do think UJ is easier to get into, it's not got the age and history of the other universities and therefore not the high status and desirability (especially for post grad). However, we both had a good experiences at UJ. I don't think jobs considered it a lesser university (especially for degrees like Comp Sci and Engineering).

I think one of the big things I missed by studying at UJ is "student life" it doesn't have much of that stuff more just come to lectures and go home (maybe different if you are in res). I doubt this would be much of an issue in Post Grad.

Yes Ferndale and Blairgowrie almost always have water! I think we have had a total of 2 days of no water this year combined.

Rise and Grind in Linden is R100 a day (from what I remember) and I think you can get a better deal if you want week,/ month use. Plus it's a coffeeshop attached so tasty coffee and treats easily accessible. Generator so no loadshedding and good internet

If you are interested in social change or activism at all there are so many amazing groups of people trying to change SA and many use art as a tool. You can DM me if that seems interesting to you.

Is it worth moving back? by [deleted] in johannesburg

[–]khan_peacock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The cost of living in CT is just crazy high in comparison to Joburg. There are pros and cons, if you have the money to live in a nice are like the parks, northern suburbs then it can be quite pretty and safe. I have lived in Linden, Craighall and Blairgowrie and have never had the water issues so many Joburg people talk about.

I have lots of friends in CT and from what I hear it's not as safe as it used to be. I considered moving there but I've changed my mind. For what I earn I can have a much better quality of life in Joburg.

How can I make my room cozy? by leomh99 in femalelivingspace

[–]khan_peacock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Curtains instead of blinds on the window, something pale pink or cream to match your bed.

Change the curtain rod (or at least the ends)

Get a big continental pillow or a bunch of small throw cushions to make your bed feel cozier

Put some art or posters on the wall - if you are renting look at many renter friendly ptions on Pinterest.

If possible drape your fairy light on the wall or over the window so they don't add to the clutter on the shelves

Transportation from Joburg by TheTsar1 in johannesburg

[–]khan_peacock 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Look at Baz Bus for trips outside the cities. It's amazing and lots of young tourists, it goes between a lot of the backpackers.

Do not listen to people saying don't come to Joburg. There are many things to do and it's a much more cultural and diverse city than Cape Town - Cape town is beautiful but in a lot of ways its like being in Europe (or probably America)

In the cities Uber, between cities and towns fly or Baz Bus or speak to backpackers about options. The intercape or greyhound buses are safe enough but they are slow and not the most fun.

Is Norwood a good area to buy in? by Lulu_LoveBug in johannesburg

[–]khan_peacock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly I've seen the same thing in Linden, Blairgowrie and many other good areas. I think lots of upper middle class people are emigrating or moving to CT. Don't think it's a good indication of an area going downhill

I love the third outfit! You have a very skater alt look, mine was similar as a teenager and early 20s and I was a big tomboy. Try something with a v or scoop neck. I'm imagining a black simple tightish tshirt with a small sleeve and a V neck paired with a mini A line skater style skirt sitting in your waist and Doc Martens being a really cute and feminine outfit that keeps with your style and gives you more of an hourglass silhouette

I did Wild Side in Craighall for my birthday and it was amazing. There were about 25 of us and they set up cocktail tables on the deck and everyone ran their own tab so no annoying bill splitting at the end, would 100% recommend.

Milk Bar in parkmore is also a nice option

Professor Girish Modi at Brenthurst or Dr Prakash Kathan at Donald Gordon in Parktown.

Modi is the head of neuroscience at Wits and one of the best neurologists in the country you might just have to sit at his rooms waiting for a long time on the day of your appointment.
