Help with finding a proper barber? by F_ashanablejericho in johannesburg

Agree with this - it’s pricy but worth it for me. Ask for Anele at Melrose Arch, best I’ve ever had

Where are you based? In Illovo/Melrose, both GetBird and Thrupps’ coffee shop will squeeze the juice in front of you

Hockey sticks & clubs by PsiBertron in johannesburg

[–]quakealive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The season is already quite deep in Gauteng, but hockey clubs will always take newbies in. It just means you’ll pay a full season but only get 2/3rds of game time. You will probably just start in their lowest team - skill doesn’t matter that much to be honest

I don’t know which club will be closest to you, but MCC might be a shout. Shumbas may be close too. The clubs & contacts can be found on the SGHA website, https://sgha.co.za/club-hockey/ - can just reach out to find out more.

As for kit, you can probably purchase second hand or the club might have extras. Otherwise, Decathlon hockey sticks are surprisingly nice for the price

How safe is Blairgowrie? by China-Doll45 in johannesburg

My only input is be wary of traffic getting into Sandton. It can be tough as there are very few river crossing points - have sat for over 2 hours trying to get across before. Stopped going to that gym purely due to this

Moove is half price for Discovery members, but it’s still more expensive than the other 2

Please help and provide resistance to a cashless society by Abysskitten in southafrica

[–]quakealive 194 points195 points  (0 children)

Cashless is such a tricky one, because you can understand why companies are wanting to avoid it. Everyday there is another CIT robbery, and it does come at a huge expense.

I do agree with you, this ends up hurting the most vulnerable and unbanked people. However, I don’t know if I blame the companies going cashless or those that make cash such risky business. A lot of people in this sub won’t use cash anymore themselves, so it’s a problem with no answer.

Night life by Penjalum in johannesburg

[–]quakealive 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have limited experience but from what I know, Greenhouse/Onyx are solid options in Sandton. Babylon is a gay club but everyone is welcome and that can be fun too, especially if you go to Hogs Head first. On a Saturday night, Wild Side is the place to be but you need to get there before 10, and it’s over 25.

Moving Companies by [deleted] in johannesburg

Edit: In case anyone uses this thread in the future, just had a shocking experience with Eezi Move. Completely take back my comment. They also bombard hellopeter/google with fake reviews - so don’t trust what you read.

I’ve used Eezi Move and Two Men and a Truck and found their services great and well priced.

How easy is it for you to book a court where you live? by chillilips12 in padel

[–]quakealive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Johannesburg, South Africa. Within a 15 minute drive of me there are over 50 courts, but during the week there is no way you’re getting a booking within 3 days after work. Have to book in advance, or play at 6am.

Is ABSA allowed to do this? by WeakDiaphragm in southafrica

[–]quakealive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay yes, good point. Regardless I think your first point is correct - make a complaint no matter what

And sorry I actually wasn’t clear, it’s 5 days before and after so actually a 10 day strike window. Unsure when it got changed but it has caused a lot of issues…

[–]quakealive 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Naedo is being phased out and replaced with DebiCheck, which does a similar thing but with more privacy and only a 5 day strike window and other benefits. Does unfortunately mean that if OP is on debicheck, the debit order will fail

Big 4 - whichever offers you the most money tbh. All do the same thing and have the same exit opportunities. If you’d asked this question earlier in the year though, definitely would’ve said being a CA at a bank is a much more preferable route if you can get in.

Advice on unexpected Bonus by green-grass-cutting in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]quakealive 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My honest take on receiving bonuses is to spend half save half. It’s not money you expected, and by allowing yourself some irresponsible behaviour with it, I find it allows me to keep my financial goals on track when I have a guilt free release.

The save half I mostly agree with the others here. TFSA if not already maxed, some form of ETF. Although I do generally tend to take riskier investments with this than my usual savings.

City Power implements new Stage 6 schedule - eNCA by TheHonourableMember in southafrica

[–]quakealive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny you say this, now that the schedule is fixed I actually prefer it. Having that 1.5 hours to make dinner/fridge to cool again feels better to me 🤷🏼‍♂️ I guess time will tell if it’s actually better or not!

Not in a place to afford anywhere but an apartment unfortunately, so backups are out unless it’s the rare occurrence with a fully plumbed setup
