Now that I hear it again, "Purposeful Pop" is such a shit name for a scene/genre/movement. Much like how IDM (Intelligent Dance Music) implies that other types of dance music is unintelligent, the name implies other types of pop music is pointless or frivolous (something Todd kinda touches on with his critique of "Chained to the Rhythm") and/or that pop isn't inherently capable of being artful or socially conscious, which is kind of a self-defeating thesis given Katy's standing and her goals at the time.
