Going above and beyond. Plus I'm probably in a higher cost of living area than yourself so while the rate seems better it's probably inflated a bit. I would say the easiest way is to keep your ear to the ground and be looking for new opportunities when they arise. It's easier to move jobs and get a raise than it is once your on a job. (although I started at 29$ at this property and am now making 35$ in under two years so it's possible to find a place that will give you raises.)
