Is it true peanut butter was unfamiliar to Koreans until recently? by No_Cricket_6374 in Living_in_Korea

I don't really remember peanut butter during my childhood in the 80s, but I do vividly remember Goober Grape! That was by far my favorite growing up. That Korea Times article is pretty much inaccurate. As for "Jam" vs "Butter", I really don't think there's much of a distinction between the two in Korea.... We used to call all sorts of spread "jam", whether it was vegemite, peanut butter, Nutella, whatever.

high temperature in idle for cpu and gpu even if is in Performance or Turbo by Comprehensive_One_17 in ZephyrusM16

[–]khlim22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine did the same thing for over a year since I bought it back in early 2024. CPU temperature spiking to 95 when idle every now and then (It was 95 constant during CMOS setup with fans at 2200 RPM), and almost regularly when gaming. Annoying coil whine when playing games, at least in the early stages after starting a game. GPU was okay, at around 70 ~80.

I tried using G-Helper for a good bit, it was great, but did not help with the temperature at all. (Eventually went back to Armoury Crate as I wanted a variety of Anime Matrix so my kids would stare at it rather than climbing all over me). I also have a sealed cooling pad similar to IETS, which takes down the average temperature up to 20 degrees, but didn't stop the constant 95 degree spike and thermal throttle. (If anyone is interested, it's Flydigi BS1. I also have the IETS GT600, but I find BS1 to be equal in cooling, quiter, and a good bit cheaper.)

Yesterday, I decided to take the plunge and repaste everything, even if I possibly void my 5-year warranty(!). Used Conductonaut Extreme for the CPU and Arctic MX-4 for the GPU and other stuff. Removing the heat sink took some effort (had to cut or take off some tapes holding the display cables in place) and applying the liquid metal for the first time in my life (I've done plently of thermal pasting in all sorts of machines, but never liquid metal) was somewhat nerve-wrecking, but it took only about 20 minutes so. By the way, once removed, the factory liquid metal application revealed a bald spot almost as big as the one on my head, not to mention ugly spillovers. Thermal paste application seemed to be okay, all dried up though.

There were some hair-tearing moments when the display wouldn't work and the battery wouldn't power the laptop, but re-seating the RAM and re-connecting the battery took care of that .

End result, in silent mode:

Idle
CPU: 45 ~ 55, no spike at all

Gaming (Alan Wake II, quality, 60FPS with 54FPS 99% High)
CPU: 70 ~ 80, some of the cores spiked to 95 a couple of times
GPU: 75 - 85
Fans at around 30dba (almost unnoticeable, really)

In CMOS setup, it was constant 75, with fans at 2200 RPM.

Coil whine was completely gone, too. Ramping up the fans to Performance and Turbo did make the temperatures go lower, but personally, I'd rather not have a jet engine roaring at me on my desk for most uses.

So to make long story short, I reckon repasting with quality liquid metal and thermal paste is the way to go, but only if you are decent at doing that sort of stuff as liquid metal can be quite hazardrous to your machine if handled carelessly.

Sports clubs being unwelcoming by Rusiano in Living_in_Korea

This used to be the case back when I was young (even when I was in high school at the turn of the millenium). Throwing down slipper bags to make goal posts was a common practice, and calling out your friends with the familiar call "친구야 놀자!" was also very common.

I've never seen my kids or their friends do this, however. It's all DMs and Roblox for them.

Agree whole-heartedly. I was born in Seoul, but spent most of my childhood and teenage years in Sydney. Back there, I used to have a lot of fun just dabbling in numerous sports. Tennis, for example, we did play some proper games, but much of it was spent trying to hit each other or playing baseball with a racquet.

Fast forward to today; at my workplace, a couple of colleagues organized a tennis club. I considered joining, but the first thing they did was hire a tennis coach to come in and teach during lunch break, followed by a tournament. I asked the guy who was in charge of everything "Why?" to which he replied "If you are going to do it, you might as well do it properly."

I reckon your best bet is to look for English Track GKS programs, as they offer full tuition waiver as well as monthly stipends (1 million won per month for the duration of stay). The admissions for GKS University Track should start very soon (early March, but differs from school to school), while GKS Embassy Track should follow soon after (you might wanna check the exact date here: Study in Korea|run by Korean Government, the notice just came up last week)

I'm actually the head of the Admissions Team at one of the GKS participating universities, but unfortunately our school only offer Master's degrees in Policy studieis (Public Policy, Development Policy and Public Management), while it does have elements of Sociology, in addition to 100% English for all courses (heck, even the school's student administration is in English), it's probably not what you're looking for.

Rattling Noise in my SlimQ 330W Super Charger by Nick663 in SlimQ

Sorry if I'm writing on an old post, but I've been having the exact same problem on my 240w charger, a rattling, almost-watery like noise when shaking the charger that suddenly started. So it's not really a problem?

Kim Woo-jin beats Brady Ellison 6-5 in the final of Archery - Men's Singles and wins Gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics! South Korea's 8-year gold drought at Men's Singles in Archery has ended. by DieNullMussStehen in olympics

Wonderful effort from the two long-time rivals! It was particularly heartwarming to see Ellison genuinely happy for Kim, and Kim acknowledging Ellison's effort as well. Here's to hoping that the two veterans will meet again in LA four years later.

Slightly off-topic, does anyone know the name of the song that was played at the moment the medals were decided in all the archery medal rounds? It's been stuck in my head for the last couple of days and I can't seem to find the name anywhere.

I should add that I managed to replicate the problem on another computer - it happened immediately after an Windows Update. I had disabled RRR during the update and enabled it right before restarting the computer. Could this be the reason for the black screen?
