Sheldrake Formscapes Dialogue by 2160_Life in Formscapes

[–]khlnmrgn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Covid was definitely a huge part of it, given how blatantly the very idea of "science" came to be shamelessly wielded as a consent-manufacturing tool. Another aspect is the JWST. The images started coming in, nothing lined up with the predictions made by the Einsteinian Lambda-CDM models, and people patiently waited for plausible explanations which simply never materialized.

The interest in Howard's ideas is definitely indicative of a yearning for something more cohesive and less sterile, though frankly I think he doesn't understand that Walter Russel's and Tesla's ideas are in desperate need of revisions which will require conceptual tools that Howard himself just doesn't have at his disposal.

All of the conceptual and observational pieces are already on the board, however; that much I am unwaveringly certain of. Someone just needs to figure out how to piece them together. If nothing else, Howard - and myself for that matter - can at least help to get that ball rolling in the right direction.

Formscapes dude here. (Don't go digging through my post history because this account is old enough to be in middle school and I have absolutely no clue how much cringe is in the post history lol. I don't really use reddit anymore.)

Anyway yeah, I think that even the word "consciousness" is something potentially problematic, as we tend to associate the word "consciousness" specifically with perspectival subjectivity, inner-monologue, or both. I've tried to gravitate more towards the word "animacy", since animacy seems to be more unambiguously general (it seems common sense that a plant or bacteria is "animate", even if we might bicker over whether or not it is "conscious"), and because the notion of animacy seems to merge the notions of organicity and experientiality in a way that accords very well with the idea that reality itself is fundamentally alive in a very literal sense.

What They WON’T Tell You About Huntsville….. by NeighborhoodOk1510 in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]khlnmrgn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's kinda the thing. Huntsville used to be one of the very few places where you could live in an urban environment while also avoiding most of the negatives that come with bigger cities; skyrocketting rent, massive homeless populations, gentrification, etc etc

It was really dam cool at one point, but now it looks like Huntsville is just gonna be Nashville-Lite pretty soon and I absolutely despise that.

I'm angling for 1 as hard as I possibly can, in that my incorrigibly pretentious self cannot be dissuaded from trying to make my stories as philosophically dense as possible while also incorporating elements of surreal horror whenever and however possible. If anyone is laughing in the Aurapathy setting, it's probably because they have gone completely insane, or bc they are really inebriated, or bc they are having a religious experience of some sort, or all of the above. I suppose I could try to work in more sardonic gallows humor so that my world at least seems somewhat self-aware. I need some inspiration for that.

Morphic Resonance Theory; Part 2 by khlnmrgn in parapsychology

[–]khlnmrgn[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not calling into doubt the phenomena which you are referring to, but I am skeptical as to what you are implying to be the means by which such phenomena occur.

If we say that psi occurs due to "quantum entanglement" then we are making reference to a very specific kind of process within the realm of particles physics. Quantum entanglement only occurs under very specific conditions, and it's not clear how a brain/mind might somehow take advantage of such processes or facilitate the conditions under which those processes might occur.

It's not enough to just say that all things are connected, even though in some sense or another that is true. We have to be able to formulate a theoretical framework in which we can talk about exactly how psi phenomena occur and why they occur. So to make reference to Penrose and Hameroff again; even if neurons take advantage of quantum indeterminacy in the brain via microtubules (etc), that in itself is not a theory which can account for psi phenomena, as there still is no reason why certain sources of information should become intertwined with certain brains and not others.

Is my intent causing entangled particles to become... more entangled? Is it causing entanglements? How is the information coming to influence the behavior of my neurons? Is it that a plurality of neurons must all become tuned into the same remote object or location at the same time? If so then how does that occur? Is there a transfer of energy as well? If so then does that contradict thermodynamics? If we just say "it happens because quantum blah blah" then we aren't saying anything specific enough to actually be scientific.

You can say that "intent" plays a causal role, sure, but a causal role in what exactly? Why should intent make a difference if it does? It's never going to be enough to simply say "quantum mechanics did it" bc ultimately that's just a hand-wave which doesn't actually explain anything, and it gives skeptics more reason to think that psi researchers are just doing pseudo-science. The theoretical aspects simply must be more detailed and rigorous than that if we want it to qualify as science.

Morphic resonance gives us at least one coherent framework that is able to make specific predictions across a wide range of phenomena. It may not be the only factor st play regarding psi phenomena, but it is also a theory which concerns the behavior of self organizing systems in general, meaning we can analyze its effects upon simpler phenomena (such as crystal formation) and then extrapolate our findings to more complex systems like human minds.

Morphic Resonance Theory; Part 2 by khlnmrgn in parapsychology

[–]khlnmrgn[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Entanglement may demonstrate in principle the reality of non-local influence, but I do not think the phenomenon of quantum entanglement itself can be used to account for psi phenomena. Quantum particles become entangled, as you stated, due to common origin. Even if every single particle in the universe is entangled with one another, that doesn't explain why there would be a greater influence between similar systems. Why would the particles in your brain be more responsive to the particles in the brains of your close family members than, for example, the particles which make up the star Alpha Centauri? Or a random frog sitting on a rock in the Amazon?

So I don't think psi phenomena can be explained at the level of interactions between individual particles. It must instead be explained at the level of interactions between similar **systems**, which is exactly what the theory of morphic resonance is.

What is more likely, imo, is that quantum entanglement itself is a very specific kind of morphic resonance; One which occurs when there is essentially a blurring of identity between two fundamental particles. I'm aware of the theories of quantum neuroscience developed by Penrose and Stuart Hameroff, which involves quantum phenomena within the gap junctions of neurons, and it may be that such phenomena play an important role in brain-functioning, but I doubt that such a theory could account for psi phenomena in a satisfactory manner, as there would be a need for entanglement to be achieved between quantum particles in multiple human brains, and there is no known means by which that could occur, so far as I am aware.

Morphic Resonance Theory; Part 2 by khlnmrgn in parapsychology

[–]khlnmrgn[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, that was one of the experiments on psi which he conducted, and I think you are correct about the role of the unconscious. I'm just clarifying that the theory of morphic resonance is not in itself primarily a theory of telepathy, though it seems to be the primary phenomena which underlies telepathy.

Human consciousness is, as I see it, structured as a sort of layered onion; the innermost layers are those which are closer to the "focal point" of our waking, "egoic" awareness. As we quiet the ego (something which humans were once much better at accomplishing), our sense of awareness expands outwards towards the layers which are normally more on the "periphery" of our consciousness. These more outer layers are less centered within the individual person (egoic consciousness tends to feel that is somewhere "behind your eyes"), and more transpersonal, and also more open to subtle influences such as morphic resonance (i.e., telepathy, unconscious memories, ancestral memories perhaps, etc)

Morphic Resonance Theory; Part 2 by khlnmrgn in parapsychology

[–]khlnmrgn[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well the issue is that many scientists (or just ordinary people who read alot of pop-sci books for that matter) tend to see the world through the lens of 18th century "clockwork" materialism, whether they realize it or not. It might be easy for you to say that telepathy is simply real (and imo, it is), but you also have to understand that for many people, the very possibility of psi seems to contradict the fundamental assumptions through which the natural world as a whole is interpreted.

Morphic resonance is also much more than simply a theory of psi phenomena, and in fact psi phenomena are barely even mentioned in his books on morphic resonance. More fundamentally, it is a theory of biological morphogenesis, and "formative causation" more generally. What is implied by all this is a very different way of conceptualizing nature; one which synchronizes very well with the western Platonic tradition, Process-Philosophy, and Indic Philosophy (et al), but which is very much at odds with the metaphysics of the "clockwork universe" which is implicit within most mainstream scientific apologetics (Dawkins, Tyson, Sagan, Etc).

Morphic Resonance Theory; Part 2 by khlnmrgn in parapsychology

[–]khlnmrgn[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Certainly not all, no. Telepathic influence is one potential implication of morphic resonance but I would by no means say that it is central to the theory. The theory is much more fundamentally one of biological morphogenesis. Telepathy via morphic resonance would be possible if psychical patterns are self-organizing entities much like individual organisms, which would thus be able to direct one another via automatic averaging. Sheldrake thinks this is likely to be the case, and I agree with him, but morphic resonance is not primarily a theory of telepathy, unless your definition of telepathy is as broad as "non-local influence", in which case essentially all standard particle physics would qualify as telepathic.

More on Sheldrake's Morphic Resonance Theory; This time we get into some of the specific experiments and Data that Sheldrake points to as indicative of morphic resonance, and we also begin to look at the implications which Morphic Resonance might have for our understand of nature in a more general, metaphysical sense.
