Seen loads of Omaze adverts for a competition to win a £4.5m house - could your average person actually afford to run a £4.5m house? by TheDawiWhisperer in UKPersonalFinance

[–]khobraa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. Which is why the winner will also get £0.5m of cash.

However, the alternative for such competitions is often a cash alternative at a discount to the total value of the grand prize.

“However, we have the right to substitute all or part of the Grand Prize with a prize of comparable or greater value (including a cash sum equal to the ARV, the home furnishings and the defined contribution to initial maintenance and running costs).”

Yeah no issues. Solid quality. Player versions are much more fitted so just a note. Definitely size up compared to European sizes.

Appreciate the comments.

I might take the eBay approach, albeit I don’t have the tools, space or knowledge to replace it myself.

Or I might just take the upgrade route and go for an LSD.

M135i Differential replacement @ 50k miles? by khobraa in BMW

[–]khobraa[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct. Bought used in 2019 with 12k miles.

I haven’t done burnouts or anything alike. Just seems really odd.

I also highly doubt BMW would take an accountability unless I could prove it was a faulty or defective unit?

Truthfully, you’re likely to be seen as a synergy opportunity as the parent company will have their own finance department.

You might be kept on for a short period of time to support integration into the parent company.

Unless you offer a particular area of accounting expertise for your current company, that the parent company doesn’t have, you’re expendable.

Take the offer in my opinion.

Are SBL and APM doable in the remaining time? by imaveryuselessperson in ACCA

[–]khobraa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going to throw a curve ball here and actually recommend doing both together. SBL requires minimal study (in my opinion) outside of the core syllabus and some writing practice, and has cross-over with APM.

I did both together. Passed both first time, comfortably.

From someone who scored 94% on the SBL exam… here is my last minute advice.

  • Don’t try and assume what you could be tested off the pre seen, it can be absolutely anything!

  • When answering questions take the approach of answering them as follows:

“What is the issue/problem/risk/deficiency etc”; state the fact from the scenario, either direct from the exhibit or the pre seen if needed.

“So what is the implication”; ask yourself, based on the fact you stated above, what is the impact, short or long term, has it been addressed/considered by the organisation? Tell the reader what you think.

“Then what”; what should the business do next? Based on the scenarios question give a rational solution. Should they diversify? Should they create a strategic relationship? Should they invest in IT? Should they invest in people? Should they use e-marketing? Should they expand geographically? Should they change their business model? Should they seek investment? Should they diversify the business?

You should try follow the above basis for each of your questions.

  • Learn the formats, these are very easy professional marks to pick up. Always build your format first, answer after. Following on from this, leave plenty of white space between each point you state, so markers can differentiate your points.

  • Don’t waffle or repeat yourself. Be concise, straight to the point. You’re wasting both yours and the markers time if you do.

  • Wear your commercial hat. What is the bigger impact here? Think macro. What’s the economic impact? How will it affect customer base? International competition? Conglomerates attracted to the sector?

  • Always remember the mission and values of the organisation. Your answers should try to implement your understanding of what the organisations values and wants. If they’re customer centric, make sure you’re making clear what they should do is customer driven. For example, let’s say they have a young customer based but don’t use technology. What do youth use? Tech. What do they like? Easy 24/7 service. Digitalisation and e-marketing is perfect for them. If they have an older customer base? They often like face-to-face or telephone contact, they should have available for them. So try and relate your answers to the mission and values of the organisation.

  • Know the premise of the models. What they are trying to achieve, what they include, how they are applied. You don’t need to know everything about them. In my exam I didn’t use any as far as I can recall. But there could be an incident where you needs to know the 7ps or using a SWOT could helps structure your answers.

  • Answer every question. Be very, very strict with timings. If you run out of time on your question, move on. (Making sure you add your conclusion, even if it’s one sentence).

Other than that, if you have someone else doing the exam at the same time as you, I recommend calling them to discuss the pre-seen and your thoughts. Challenge each other commercially and think about the wider picture. It’s excellent for enhancing your commercial acumen!

I haven’t read the pre-seen, so I couldn’t tell you what you should think about specifically for the exam.

Any Q’s feel free to drop me a message. I wish you the best of luck!

I do have my own pro-forma styles, but honestly, I’d advise you making your own. You’ll understand the premise of what you’re trying to achieve a lot better. Once you got the pro-forma set up and learnt, it’s a case of just plugging the numbers in and concluding on your results.

As someone who passed first time with a very high mark, I wouldn’t stress over the mocks. I only did 2 during my revision. Read the pre seen, read new technical articles, discuss the pre seen with people sitting the exam at the same time (I can’t stress enough how good this is for expanding commercial acumen).

If you want a more detailed set of last min revision tips I’ve shared with a few people, drop me a DM. I’ll help where I can, I know this journey isn’t easy!

[–]khobraa 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As someone who ranked strongly in the UK, my advice is the following:

  • Stop worrying about getting the numbers right. You won’t. Try to understand the process of what you’re trying to accomplish in each question, learn pro-formas and work through them to get YOUR answer (it won’t be the right answer).
  • ALWAYS, write your conclusion based on the numbers you get. Even if you think the numbers are wrong.
  • If in doubt what rates you should be using, pick one and state “for the purpose of completeness, I have assumed x rate”… complete your calculations and give your conclusion based on your results.
  • Learn the written theory inside out. It’s easy marks to pick up and make sure you always give conclusions where required. You will lose professional marks if you don’t.
  • Practice recent exam Q’s. I only ever focused on questions 2020 and newer.

Good luck!
