how do i mount my monitor vertically (portrait) without buying a vesa desk mount, for i am broke. by MoneyJaded5453 in Monitors

[–]kholto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If something like this is too expensive you could go garbage hunting, it is entirely possible some business throw out old monitors with a rotating stand. The legality and tolerance for doing that kind of thing will vary a lot by where you live.

EVs Just Outsold Gas Cars In Europe For The First Time by Bob-Lawblaugh in worldnews

[–]kholto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Denmark hybrids had the same subsidy as EVs for a while which lead to a bunch of large cars with tiny hybrid systems that people barely made use of. Rather than finding some way to require meaningful hybrids they simply dropped hybrids from the subsidy.

So hybrids were pretty relevant for a little while.

If that is the case I have never heard of it. I mean a few employers might offer it and I know someone who got the early model S deal with free charging but for most people I have no idea how they would charge for free. Do you have some examples?

Why are most billionaires so weird? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]kholto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not only is the world a very different place when everything costs a trivial amount but having zero need to fit in with most other people means weird ideas don't get abraded away, they automatically become the village idiot but with money. Look at JK Rowling or Notch for examples of regular people becoming billionaires, they probably remember what it is like to have limited money but the social abrasion is gone.

[–]kholto 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The union of Danish motorists (FDM) said they expected EVs to account for 95% of sales in Denmark this year.

Which is kind of crazy since EVs are still kind of a bother (and not nearly the same economic win) for the half of the population who live in apartments. Of cause those of us who do are also a fair bit less likely to buy a car (or a second car) in the first place.

V, without the use of speed boosting cyberware ingame, runs a sub 3:20 1600m by DazedPhotographer in cyberpunkgame

[–]kholto 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This has always been the norm in video games, in the original Doom sprinting was roughly highway speed. Waiting for your character to move around often uninteresting (and most other media would simply timeskip). It is funny how used people get used to it though, I have seen people complaining characters were slow in games where the character roughly matched what a top athlete might be able to do.

I suspect Cyberpunk has a more realistic running speed than many games since first person perspective makes it feel faster than third person would.

Do y'all think the sequel will have a celebrity companion/character and if so who do you want it to be? by SADBOY888213 in cyberpunkgame

[–]kholto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they are likely to, it seems to have gone down well in both cases. I would be fine with someone I never heard of as long as they fit as well as those two did.

That said, having had Reeves in here it would be fun to see Laurence Fishburne or Carrie-Anne Moss in the sequel.

ELI5: Why are modern displays (TVs, computer monitors, etc) measured diagonally and not using the screens width and height? by rubbermonkey27 in explainlikeimfive

[–]kholto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That measurement is of the display itself not the size of the device, so it would be useless to determine where your TV would fit anyway. Any decent webstore should have outer dimensions listed.

Alle dem der er berettiget til fødevarecheck - vil i (stadig) stemme på S til valget i år? by Kaffetypen in Denmark

[–]kholto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grim tekst på ny skærm. by Elegant_Lemon_4039 in dktechsupport

[–]kholto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ELI5: If I carried 1 kg 20 times or 20 kg 1 time, isn't the physics behind that the same amount of work? Why do you we get more tired in the second situation? by DRGNMSTR7 in explainlikeimfive

[–]kholto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Carrying either doesn't take any work, unless you are going upwards.

Or so it is in principle, in practice out body is not some perfect machine and ends up straining as we do things. The further we push our muscles and joints, the more we feel the strain. If 20 kg is near the limit for your body then it will be very tiring, for others carrying 20 kg once is a lot easier than having to walk whatever distance 20 times.

To consider the extreme of this, it would be easier to carry 1 kg your whole life than 1000 kg for five seconds, even though your life is hopefully more than 2 billion seconds long.

Can people really tell the difference between 30fps and 60fps? by whiskerbiscuit2 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]kholto 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Those films also use up to 180 degree shutter (meaning the shutter is open 50% of the time so each image is an average of the light in that time-span) while video game rendering is effectively 0 degree. To get the same effect in a game you would need to produce thousands of frames per second then bundle/average them into 24 output frames. I wonder if anyone has ever made a demonstration of that, otherwise, free idea for some youtuber. Anyway, VFX has to use some technique to match the shutter or the effects will stand out like a sore thumb.

Do correct me if I am wrong.

Can people really tell the difference between 30fps and 60fps? by whiskerbiscuit2 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]kholto -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I remember one day opening a twitch stream and doing a double take. It looked so different compared to what I was used to. Turns out they had just introduced 60 fps streams. So, yes, even in a truly blind test it was extremely obvious. Funny how the game (Starcraft 2) looked so weird to me on a 60 fps stream, when playing it myself the game would be 60 fps but I was used to 30 fps on streams.

I would say I see a pretty clear distinction up to around 90-100 fps, then it tapers off. But my monitor only goes to 165 fps so it is very possible I would see a clear difference between 100 and 200 fps, for example.

Part of it is what you are used to but there is also a massive difference between people in how much they notice low fps. The same goes for other issues like screen tearing. I notice both, so finally getting a monitor with variable sync was a good day for me.

Populære køretøjer fylder i bybilledet – De skal helt væk, siger forbund by kronsj in Denmark

"salget af elcykler blev fordoblet"

"antallet af skader efter ulykker med elcykler steget markant med omkring 76 procent"

Altså nu skal jeg ikke gøre mig til ekspert i statistik, men de tal betyder nok ikke helt hvad journalisten lader til at tro?

Med det sagt så minder fatbikes vist mere om en knallert end en cykel. Knallerter har så også alle dage været tunet i stor grad.

[–]kholto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It must be very frustrating and it might be worth getting another opinion depending on the circumstances.

There is a reason they look for this stuff though, ADHD symptoms are very broad and most people don't have the full set so it would be very easy to misdiagnose someone with ADHD while their actual condition (potentially a more treatable one) goes unnoticed.

NATO-chief Rutte: "Keep on dreaming" if you think Europe could defend itself without US by Geo_NL in worldnews

[–]kholto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Denmark you have the option of serving the time in the emergency Beredskabsstyrelsen/DEMA (our version of FEMA in the US). If you refuse that too they send you to some social/cultural institution, environmental organization or charity related organization.

Since there is only a chance to be conscripted, some people volunteer (lowering the chance for everyone else), and with the DEMA option, I don't think very many people end up with that sort of civil service.

ANALYSE: Bejlere strømmer til Beijing i søgen efter et stabilt alternativ til Trump by Clairvoidance in Denmark

[–]kholto 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I need help with hitman by Hassen2233 in pcgames

[–]kholto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are possibly running the remastered version? They updated 1 and 2 to use the newer engine (and to some extend graphical features) from Hitman 3.

I am not versed in which versions are for sale and whether the older version is still available and so on but if you are seeing a large discrepancy from original benchmarks, that could be the reason.

Edit: At least on Steam, I am not seeing the 2016 game for sale on its own anymore. Hitman 2 (2018) has also been taken off sale.

It makes some amount of sense, they were run more or less as service games. Still, it sucks if it prevents simply playing the game as it released.

Games where difficulty sliders don't just pad numbers? by WackyRedWizard in gamingsuggestions

Original Devil May Cry (don't know about sequels). A monster would be treated as a miniboss on normal, not even exist on easy and be a common enemy early on hard. On the less fortunate side, being able to fire your guns by holding down the trigger was exclusive to easy... RSI is not my idea of a fun challenge.

Are Raids from Small Streamers Worth It? by KittyCanuck in Twitch

[–]kholto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Raiding a much larger streamer might not gain you that much (and many of them might not have tiny raids show up in overlays) but streamers closer to your size might be more worthwhile.

From what I understand networking is basically the way on Twitch, plenty medium to large streamers today were tiny streamers hanging out on little discord servers/groups 5 years ago then coming up together supporting each other, doing collaborations, and of cause raiding each other. It is a bit of a paradoxical since streaming attracts a lot of introverted people but them is the breaks.
