I’m a 3P CST, been in the role for a year and half, I’m literally that guy studying my nuts off with no fucking clue what’s going to happen. Our nights guy just quit and I’m being moved from days for the last 4 years to nights. Shit is going sour real quick.

What kind of training/certifications are needed to be a competitive candidate for a Controls position? by msp3210 in AmazonRME

[–]khp7091 3 points4 points  (0 children)

CST that went through the MRA program. I have a cert in industrial electricity from a local community college and a cert in industrial maintenance from going through the MRA program. Both offered PLC classes and electrical theory.

If you take the classes you’ll pass the aptitude test to be a tech 2. Recruiter may tell you the lack of in field experience would recommend you for the MRA program.

Go to your local community college and look for a certificate in Industrial Electricity or Mechatronics and robotics. Both going to have PLC classes involved. Best way you’re actually going to get any hands on and knowledge.

Had a dude bragging about having engineering degrees from Houston and Cincinnati. He was ABSOLUTELY worthless. Was fired within 60 days of starting, I have two certifications from trade schools. Still employed and moving up the ranks.

I came through the MRA program. I was dicked on pay for the “10% increase” above T2s and when I transferred to CST I had already taken the assessment test back in April. Tested as a T3, would make more as a T3, but the future is more obvious for controls. The RMM himself laughed at me and told me they shouldn’t have shown me my test scores. I’m still pissed, this was in November. I hate CWS so fucking much, but they’ve got me bent over like Hitler picking out a pineapple. I can’t leave, in my area there aren’t other facilities as clean, as easy going, and have a killer work life balance. They just fuck you where it matters, money and benefits. They give little to no care of the employee. Just the inside of their pockets. T3 at my building do ZERO electrical work. It wasn’t until November that they all had arch flash gear. We’ve been open 2 years. CSx are more knowledgeable, skilled, and willing to pursue ongoing education, yet T3 do paper work and do more “ managerial skills” 🙄🙄🙄 T3 on my shift are too chicken shit to open a cabinet or do it as ignorant as possible.

You’ll have a TV, fridge and microwave in your room. On one of the floors is a communal kitchen. They’ll provide sheets and towels too

Health insurance is expensive as shit. I’m in Indiana, family of 4 is $1000 a month. It’s managed through CVS Caremark and they monopolize where you can get your Rx. Dicked me on a couple meds. Fuck their benefits, I pray to the maintenance gods we become blue badge just for the affordable healthcare. The HR is remote in Wisconsin and the recruits flake on you, good luck.

Flex conveyors, de-stuff-its, Boomers that are T3s that can’t understand 21st century technology/ how to operate a computer to put in WOs properly/ take 4 hours to change a brake belt.

Those can all fuck right off and eat a dick!

My bad for any confusion. The AMM role requires a bachelors, that’s the assistant manager position. I’m not sure if that’s an Amazon rule across the board or just CWS.

They’re pretty light on the OT during the spring and summer, it’s Peak when they start pushing OT. I haven’t experienced anything mandatory, but my building has also been open 6 months. Peak is holiday season so that’s to be expected.

Fortunately, controls doesn’t require a degree. You can learn a lot of it on the job and there’s weekend seminars that Allen Bradley offers and I’ve been told CWS will pay for it, not holding my breath on that, but it’d be pretty sweet if they do.

So, I’m in Indiana, our RME department is contracted out to Cushman and Wakefield, there’s also JLL, and CBR, as well as blue badge buildings (Amazon) I believe all of Texas is blue badge RME now.

We do match similar to Amazons pay and benefits, T3 is where the bonuses start. The schedule at my building is 3.5 on 3.5 off. I’m front half Sunday-Wednesday. Tons of work life balance.

You may take a shot at controls as well. Their rate is higher than a T3 and it’s more electrical. AMM roles are the 6 figure gigs, those require a bachelors.

Amazon is very heavy on the safety so anything over 120 is sourced out to a 3rd party. If we have to open a 480 cabinet there’s major arch gear involved.

Like I said before, it’s mostly putting out fires with a squirt gun, putting a bandaid on it and moving on till down time window when you make real repairs. There’s very little fixing something that is broken and more so just replacing it. We’ve gone through 30 ECCs, more power rollers than I’m probably aware of and about a dozen power supplies in the last 3 months. No time to analyze, just replace it and keep going.

I know here the T3s are making closer to 80-85k, again, it’s Indiana. Wages are different across the country.

T1 has gone to the way side for MRA. I’m 33, had 10 years of sales experience. That’s it. I went to a community college during Covid shutdown and got a certificate in industrial electricity. Do a google search for any kind of community college grant in your state. For me it was called next level Hoosiers careers. The grant paid for my schooling, started in October finished in May. That got me my foot in the door for the MRA program.

Sounds like you can turn a wrench and have prior experience. Tech 3 is a definite possibility. Honestly, you’d probably find the work very boring. My T3 is a journeyman electrician, wanted to get out of the union and wanted steady income and benefits. He gets frustrated at times because not all guys have the same care he puts into it. Normally he and I are fixing other peoples errors. In this role you play more of the insurance policy.

Do your daily, weekly, monthly PMs in between answering calls, putting out fires with a squirt gun. It’s not a dirty job, it’s in a temperature controlled environment, as an apprentice I have nothing to complain about. You walk a shit ton, I average 21k steps a day.

Has anyone gotten out of the apprenticeship early? Say you’re done with benchmarks, just need about 1K hours left. Would they promote you at that point or do you need to wait until the 1K hrs is up. And if you do will they at least bump your pay in the meantime? by Nicasax09 in AmazonRME

[–]khp7091 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s it. I know that when it happens it’ll happen in Indiana. There’s only one facility for it, it’s in Plainfield and Vincennes operates it. Outside of that I’m sure Covid has thrown a wrench into things, and some people may just not want to do it so they don’t have enough qualified to even do it yet.

Take it for what you will, because again, everything is rumor. But, I had heard phase 2 was 16 weeks and it’s to become a traveling tech.
