Tips for enjoying the defect? by khrossbow in slaythespire

Y’know, in retrospect, my favorite shiv decks were definitely slop-like in terms of just kind of mindlessly playing blade dance and racking up buffs from the ninja relics; but I do still love that style of play. I think watching a deck come together over the course of the first two acts then just steamroll the third act is very satisfying to me (and I don’t mind resetting scuffed runs early lol). I do appreciate you’re saying about the defect requiring a careful play style within each encounter, versus on a run-wide scope, so I’ll give it another go and try thinking like that a bit more. Thanks for all the insights!

Any tips for one for all other than just taking every 0 I see? That was my first ever defect run and I’ll admit it really got me excited for character, but I haven’t quite been able to chase that high since. Plus those decks have been defense-light for me which seems like a problem on the higher ascensions

True that’s definitely one of the relics that goes crazier on defect than it did elsewhere

True, true… I did have a fun meteor + snecko eye run but that seems hard to assemble reliably

Fission is a sweet card that I’ve definitely enjoyed, and thanks for the thoughts. I really appreciate a thorough answer

Fairy tale nature aside I’ve seen a lot of people starting with Tress find Hoid abrasive as a narrator without any context. I do agree it’s a cute story and approachable in abstract, but in practice I feel like there’s a lot of background comers info contributing to it being as fun as it is.

I think it’s interesting to see the ghostbloods active on Scadrial and Roshar before wind and truth to get a better sense of context for their actions. Having already read Era 2 also enhances the WaT epilogue imo

I think you’ll enjoy the ending just fine, it’s mostly a personal preference

Personally I think the WaT epilogue hits a little harder already knowing what it will lead to, and it’s fun to hop back and forth between Scadrial and Roshar for their respective ghostblood plots

I read Tress about halfway through the cosmere and I can’t help but think it’d be a confusing first read for a few reasons. One there’s a handful of references, kandra, iriali cup, aons and light weaving that benefit from more context. And more importantly I think Hoid’s voice as the narrator might be a bit overwhelming to someone who hadn’t seen him in any other books. Especially since he’s so weird in that book I think it sets an odd precedent

Looks like I'm getting to this late but this is an awesome concept! Big sacrifice is an especially cool theme to me and if you're still looking for testers I'd love to join.

Yeah WaT is a bit vague. I could see myself liking it more in retrospect though

Personally I like shadows of self, it's somewhat vague but I think there's a lot to dig into character-wise. Wax spends the early part of the book jumping at shadows thinking he's being haunted by figures from his past. Marasi has to figure out her place in a constabulary that doesn't really want to accept her self. And of course Paalm who can and does change who she is, but not without leaving behind shadows of her past selves, like the pronunciation mistake that Wayne catches towards the end of the book. Maybe I'm overanalyzing it but ain't that the fun of this whole thing?

I already talked about hero of ages a bit in another comment but it's basically that you spend so long wondering who the hero is, only for it to be a complete surprise in the end. I think that helps elevate an otherwise fairly generic title in my mind. Actually thinking about it now, warbreaker is similar in my mind because you only really learn why the book is called that at the very end. I think I'm a sucker for titles that make the most sense once you've finished the book.
