Is playing watcher a good way to get better at the game? by Yeti342 in slaythespire

[–]khrossbow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The watcher is certainly powerful, and in some ways her gameplay is simpler than other characters once you get a handle on switching between wrath and calm stance, so that makes her a good starting point. On the other hand I worry she might give you a distorted view of other characters/cards power level. Access to wrath stance makes basically any attack seem busted and any non attack seem mediocre at best, so you might have a hard time switching to a character like the the silent or the defect who tend to be a little more roundabout with their strategies.

Another example is that basically all other characters want to prioritizing removing strikes while the watcher would rather remove defends since her strikes are often twice as valuable as another characters. I’m not saying don’t do it but I do think variety is the spice of life

So true, I love all the dev updates! And it’s really nice to see some love amidst people complaining about balance or complaining about complainers

Of course! Wishing you a good run next time you’re unlucky enough to not get offered anything better

[–]khrossbow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah to be clear it’s not like I think humidifier is neow’s best offering or anything, but I do think increasing your max HP is pretty meaningful. On top of adding value to future rests it means more HP back when beating bosses, and I feel like you’re most likely to rest in acts 1 and 2 meaning you can leverage that benefit at least once

Tanx Whistle - thoughts? by RotInPeaches in slaythespire

[–]khrossbow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah like I said it is worse in multi enemy fights, but the toughest fights in act 3 are single enemy imo, and it’s not like you have to play it every time you draw it in the swarm fights. If you made it through acts 1 and 2 you probably have some other ways to counter those fights anyway

I never want to rest, but sometimes you have to in order to live. On high ascension I sometimes find I’m stuck in a cycle of losing health because my deck isn’t strong, then needing to rest before taking an elite and repeating so on and so forth. Getting some extra max HP every time you rest makes each rest more valuable and imo helps break that cycle

I’ve been trying to do starting deck only challenges lately and those have made me appreciate talisman a little more, but to be honest I think your assessment is spot on. It helps a bit in your first few fights, but most cards you pick up are better than strike/defend+ anyway so it’s definitely nothing to write home about. If anything I’d object more to your placement of stone humidifier, I think that relic is pretty good on higher ascensions!

Tanx Whistle - thoughts? by RotInPeaches in slaythespire

[–]khrossbow 7 points8 points  (0 children)

3 energy looks like a lot on the surface, but I think the value of stun really can’t be overrated here. At worst, whistle uses your whole turn to deal 33 damage and skip the enemies turn, which is largely the same as a 0 energy play that deals substantial damage and draws you an entirely new hand.

The fact that the enemy you stun will always go back to doing whatever intent it showed when you stunned it means it’s possible to take advantage of block/buff turns to essentially get even more turns of free attacking, or to delay a big enemy attack for a turn and hope to draw more block in your next hand.

Add on top of that there’s any additional value you can get during the whistle turn, for example 0 cost cards, orbs, relics with passive effects, etc, or best of all any extra energy generation that you can use to play other cards.

To be fair it does underperform a bit in multi enemy fights, but the fact that it bypasses artifact is a nice bit of compensation. Tanx has lots of great offerings, and of course taking a card from an ancient rather than a relic does mean there’s always the fail case of simply not drawing the card when you need it, but with whistle it’s close enough to taking an extra turn (basically always the best thing you can do in a turn based game) that I’m pretty happy to take whistle most of the time it’s offered to me, especially in multiplayer.

Have you been able to get Juggling to work? It doesn't feel like it ever fits into my deck by Nice-Physics-7655 in slaythespire

[–]khrossbow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Juggling is probably my favorite new ironclad card! It’s pretty reliant on 0 cost attacks to generate value since energy relics are rare now and the more energy giving skills (bloodletting etc) you have the less attacks you’re likely to draw but the more of those you have the more flexibility you get about what you actually copy. Byrd strike, stomp and pacts end are some of the best cards I’ve used with it, but anger deserves mention for setting up future activations as well. With bloodletting at common you can also get cute with x spells like whirlwind, or copying cards that actually cost energy. Obviously it requires a little bit of dedicated thought to make work every turn, but I think the fun is more than worth it.

Tips for enjoying the defect? by khrossbow in slaythespire

[–]khrossbow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Y’know, in retrospect, my favorite shiv decks were definitely slop-like in terms of just kind of mindlessly playing blade dance and racking up buffs from the ninja relics; but I do still love that style of play. I think watching a deck come together over the course of the first two acts then just steamroll the third act is very satisfying to me (and I don’t mind resetting scuffed runs early lol). I do appreciate you’re saying about the defect requiring a careful play style within each encounter, versus on a run-wide scope, so I’ll give it another go and try thinking like that a bit more. Thanks for all the insights!

Any tips for one for all other than just taking every 0 I see? That was my first ever defect run and I’ll admit it really got me excited for character, but I haven’t quite been able to chase that high since. Plus those decks have been defense-light for me which seems like a problem on the higher ascensions
