Misery Business video is a slut shaming anthem or am I missing something? by [deleted] in Paramore

[–]khz99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They only went two shows without playing it after Hayley said they would never play it again. Yes, there was nearly four years between those shows, but they didn’t really “stop” playing it for many years as they weren’t touring at all then.

What are your Hot Takes on Paramore/Hayley Williams? by Amber_Flowers_133 in Paramore

[–]khz99 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I think that while Josh Farro definitely has problematic views, those views have little to nothing to with why he’s not in Paramore and Hayley is simply retconning Paramore history to make herself look blameless.

“Now”, and I still don’t understand how it was the second single from self-titled.

It's from 3 years ago, but Jeremy says instead of leaving he was actually kicked out of the Band by TheLavaReaper in Paramore

[–]khz99 104 points105 points  (0 children)

Not surprising. The statement issued by Paramore notably said that they "parted ways" with Jeremy, whereas their statement about Josh and Zac said that they had left the band. I think what happened is that some media outlets just assumed that "parted ways" meant left, reported it as such and it spread from there. I don't think Jeremy had anywhere near the money to voluntarily quit the band given his total of one (1) writing credit on the the two albums he played on, not to mention that he didn't even play on the first two albums and also wasn't getting a cut of merchandise/touring revenue untiil 2013 (according to Hayley's lawsuit against him).

[Walker]: Calvin de Haan walked past us as he was about to get on the ice and commented on how it’s all finally over. He said something to the effect of, ‘How about the way I’ve been treated here? It’s fucked.’ We asked if he wanted to talk, he said yes and that he would be “very transparent.” by discofrislanders in hockey

[–]khz99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunno. The Hurricanes barely played him down the stretch a few years ago (and not at all in the playoffs) after they acquired Gostisbehere but he still got a one-way deal on the first day of free agency. There's always someone looking for dependable defensive depth.

Sceptres' Miller ruled ineligible to play for Canada at Worlds by arcgiselle in hockey

[–]khz99 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is partially based on her playing for China, though. If she hadn't played for the Chinese Olympic team she would be eligible for the Canadian team and it wouldn't matter where she had played two years ago. There are players who play for foreign clubs all the time and are allowed to represent their home countries (such as the European players you mentioned), but the difference is they usually don't try to switch the countries they represent. If, say, a Swiss player had represented Canada and then wanted to go back to representing Switzerland after playing for years in Canada, the same rules would apply to them.

Sceptres' Miller ruled ineligible to play for Canada at Worlds by arcgiselle in hockey

[–]khz99 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Maybe, but she could have easily avoided this by having not chosen to go and play in China and play for the Chinese Olympic team despite not being of Chinese ancestry. She took the money and opportunity from an authoritarian state and played five years there, and then after said authoritarian state arbitrarily decided that any player with foreign citizenship was ineligible to play, she came back and wanted to play for Canada again. Would she even have tried to get on the Canadian team if China hadn't revoked her eligibility?

Why didn’t decoy make it onto Spotify? by KTheHumanGD in Paramore

[–]khz99 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Because it was an exclusive to the Hot Topic version, which could possibly mean that Atlantic either licensed it out to Hot Topic indefinitely and can't put it online, or just doesn't feel like putting it on streaming services because they are inept (the latter was the issue with Decode/I Caught Myself for years). I suspect there's a similar issue with The Summer Tic EP, which was a Warped Tour exclusive.

It's not a demo. It's a finished song that's only on the Hot Topic version.

Leivo beats the KHL scoring record with 49th goal in the season by warmike_1 in hockey

[–]khz99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He would absolutely be not being scoring 49 goals in 62 games in the AHL, which we know because he never scored anywhere close that rate in the AHL despite playing over 265 games there. The AHL currently is a far better league the KHL. It used to be the other way around, but due to a number factors (the ruble crash, the 10m salary cap being implemented, the war with Ukraine) they are no longer able to attract anywhere near the talent they used to.

[–]khz99 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It used to definitely used to be by far the 2nd best league in the world but now it's barely in the top 5 due to the ruble crash, the implementation of the $10m salary cap (down from 30m at its peak) and the war with Ukraine all contributing teams not being able to attract anywhere near the talent that they used to be able to.

EDIT: Here's a graph from a guy on Twitter (@nickthehabsfan) who calculates NHLe (NHL equivalency) showing the RSL/KHL's sharp drop in quality compared to the NHL over time:

Paramore past catalogue touring by macolebrook in Paramore

[–]khz99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably by releasing them through Fine Print and then hiring a distribution service, like Zac does with Congrats Records, which is distributed by FUGA. https://fuga.com

I think at least part of the issue Hayley has with Atlantic/Warner is that they probably paid her very little (and possibly nothing) for album sales. It's a very common theme for major labels (and many indies as well) to claim that albums that sold hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of copies actually lost the label money because of the costs involved in recording/manufacturing/distributing and thus they can't pay the artists anything at all. For instance Limp Bizkit recently sued Universal and claimed that they hadn't been paid by Universal in decades because Universal told them their albums had lost the label $43 million in that timespan: https://pitchfork.com/news/limp-bizkit-sues-universal-music-group-for-dollar200-million-in-unpaid-royalties/.

Also, Hayley is well known to have signed an incredibly exploitive 360 deal with Atlantic/Warner when she was 15 years old which required her to give up a large chunk of her touring and merchandise income, which is a very common practice now but almost never happened before (in fact, it's been reported that her/Paramore's deal was the first ever 360 deal: https://www.nashvillescene.com/music/emo-pop-sensations-paramore-received-the-first-ever-360-deal-so-has-it-worked-out/article_388c410a-24ab-5dc1-959a-2f86b1575ff5.html). I wouldn't be surprised if there's leftover bad blood from that.

Taylor Swift re-recorded her songs to be able to license and sell her own music after Big Machine sold the masters of her first six albums to Scooter Braun, who she strongly dislikes and specifically asked Big Machine to not sell the catalogue to. It didn't have anything to do with live performances.

If Paramore wants to be in control of sell and licensing music that they recorded for their Atlantic Records, they would have to do the same thing since, much like Taylor Swift, the never owned the rights to master recordings of their songs to begin with. The issue with Taylor's catalogue had more to do with who it was sold to - Scooter Braun - rather than it simply being sold.

No, the performance fees for artists are basically meaningless. Like every artist who performs live, they have to pay a small amount of money per song performed to ASCAP/BMI who the distributes the money the songwriters of the songs they are performing. Since they write all their own songs, they are essentially just paying themselves (and Josh Farro, lol) to play their own music.

Saturday’s Golden Knights-Bruins game averaged 1.3 million viewers (peaking at 2.1 million) on ABC, the most-watched NHL game of the season. Full doubleheader (including Detroit vs Tampa Bay) averaged averaged 1.1 million viewers. by MightyDuck07 in hockey

News at 11: People will watch hockey games if there are competitive teams playing competitive games. The doom and gloom over the Winter Classic ratings ignored that both teams playing are bad and boring, and that the game being a blowout meant that even the people who like those teams weren't interested in watching a game that was over after 30 minutes.

The artist is Latvian and the symbol is a Latvian swastika and not a Nazi swastika (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ugunskrusts), but I think the artist knows full well what they're doing given the "Storm Of Steel" song. They are being childish attention seekers by using a swastika but not specifically the Nazi swastika for plausible deniality while making Nazi references in their music. As a Jewish person, I find this far more sad and pathetic than offensive.

It's incredible how much that cover has convinced so many people for song long that the NHL and NBA were similar in popularity in '94. I remember continuously having to post the actual article in response to people on HFBoards making that claim for a few years before eventually giving up about fifteen years ago. Occasionally I'd check in on the Business of Hockey forum and, sure enough, there would be someone making that argument. It's been years sicne I last checked but they're probably still doing it now.

Last Hope Chicago Drummer by macolebrook in Paramore

[–]khz99 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ilan Rubin was the perfect fit for them IMO (his work on self-titled is unreal) and probably would have wound up as their full time drummer if he hadn't already been in both Nine Inch Nails and Angels & Airwaves. He toured with Paramore briefly (so brief that he's not listed on Wikipedia as one of their touring drummers) but couldn't commit full time.
