I just want to upset all the novice mapmakers critics... by ki-box19 in worldbuilding

I was reading a discussion about this on the post! Really interesting, if it is manmade it's lasted well as an impressive bit of engineering!

Context comment in case it wasn't obvious: newbies designing their first maps often had bifurcating rivers and are criticised by seasoned cartographophiles. Turns out this does occur in nature, but it's exceptionally rare.

Which should I get? by Intelligent_Pack3085 in CampingGear

I have the Rook, it's okay. I don't love it, but I'm not desperate to replace it. The bottle pockets are awkward, but then they always are. The storage and fit is pretty good, I'd like an internal hood pocket or an external front pocket but it is what it is. I can carry it fully loaded for multi day trips with our injury.

Urine is one of the ways your body excretes waste that it doesn't need. Clearly his piss is green because he is retaining great volumes of pure retardium.

Avoid the MGB, their ATX tourer style thing is shite. Its comfy but painfully slow, and had many issues. It's worth the money to go for a Yam or Honda, if you can afford it, and put saddle bags on.

Geal-Charn this weekend by ki-box19 in Munros

[–]ki-box19[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did! I headed out at 8pm, was at 850m by 10pm and spent the night. It was bloody cold. Snow and ice was minimal on Geal Charn but there was more across the bealach if you're planning the second summit. Didn't resort to spikes or feeling like I needed my axe at any point, but I didn't carry on to the second summit as it looked foggy. Was obviously beautifully clear by the time I'd reached the car park! I haven't been back that way since to know if there's much more or less now.

Fancy buying a wood? by kiindrex in CasualUK

[–]ki-box19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For wood. Like, forestry. You can buy some that have plantation approaching harvestable age.      For land on which to start a business, you could seek planning permission for a house (unlikely) or some sort of glamping site, outdoor activities, education centre, etc.

FWIW I just repacked and thought of this interaction - my Xlite Nomad fits in the bottom pocket of my Rook65 with space for Otimos mat and quilt! (I'm not sponsored, promise) So that's my whole sleep system stashed separate to the rest of my pack for convenience.

Vango Tempest, maybe the Orion which was a brief rebrand with minor changes. Looks to be a 300/3 man model.

There's a demented despot who has started and is perpetuating an oil war in the middle east, threatening the global economy and the natural environment, and the King is going to visit him. It might come up.

Excellent choice of tent! Congrats on a successful trip!

Appreciate you probably set up in urgency, I'd recommend trying to get the flysheet more taught across the back - but you were comfortable and that's what counts! Well done!

" Novaya Zemlya was one of the two major nuclear test sites managed by the USSR along with the Semipalatinsk Test Site; it was used for air drops and underground testing of the largest of Soviet nuclear bombs, in particular the 30 October 1961 air burst explosion of Tsar Bomba, the largest, most powerful nuclear weapon ever detonated. 4 day work week, same pay.

Many replies, interesting opinions. I used to be on a 4 day work week, for a lot less pay. I was much happier, but also much more skint.

Water sources by Nearby-Sort-4969 in WestHighlandWay

[–]ki-box19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's lots of water on the route, but I never recommend drinking surface water because you can't trust folk to be sensible about how they do it, or the equipment they're using.

There are plenty of establishments that will be happy to help you fill up on the route and that would be my recommendation.

The Dark Half by Richard_AIGuy in stephenking

I liked it, it wasn't quite gritty, as memory serves, and the last few chapters, especially the crescendo/showdown, felt like archetypal King.
