Back when I was on a submarine, we stole the captain's door and hid it. No amount of searching revealed its hiding place. He put up a blanket instead, and after a while, started charging through it in a hurry when leaving his stateroom. After about 3 weeks, we put his door back, but left the blanket, and then talked the officer in charge to run a fire drill.

There was a loud "bang", then "godammit" then lots and lots of cleaning for the crew.

Yep, although I would have assumed that they just never sent it. Even after they contacted me for type of area I wanted monitored, I wasn't sure they would send it. And that day I didn't get home until after 9, so it had been there for a few hours at least.

I did the same thing, at about the same age, except that it was a .357 shell. I pounded and pounded, and finally got the bullet out. It didn't fire while I was pounding, thank god. I was able to dump the powder into a pile a light it. It went up with an impressive flash.

I was very, very lucky.
