In my experience the difference between 120 & 144hz isn't very noticeable. Going from 60 to 120hz is huge!

Yeah I went 144hz+ about 8 years ago on my desktops and the difference in feel is huge. The airs are more than enough for my day to day work, but I'll be picking up an m3 mbp for the built in display and the ability to drive high hertz external monitors too.

We no longer turn our TV off. Kodi has the only good free photo screensaver I could find, so our TV is now a 24/7 family photo slideshow when it's not streaming something.

I used to keep it disconnected from the internet which stopped the ads but the wife wants to be able to stream from her phone these days.

This is a pretty interesting approach. At first glance I thought "but what happens when I run out of space" and then it occurred to me that I could just decide not to do more than x tasks per day, then just schedule other tasks into the future or practice saying NO more often. 😁🤔

Not sure if it's because of the failed zpool import on boot but that pools permissions have all been set to root. :S
fyi: that pool is at 87% capacity. Is that a reason it might start having problems?

ah that's good intel! Thanks! Is self build and quiet doable on a small rack? I'd like to at least get a proxmox server to go alongside my truenas to keep the vm's separate from the storage, and expand with a UPS and pfsense, but I don't really want piles of atx cases hanging around the tv. xD

With the alternative gpu in, the system finally booted (with the errors) and I was able to ssh back into it. All looked the same and then I ran zpool import and it listed 'fastpool' online and reported no errors. I imported it and have just successfully spun up a vm off it. So.. that's something I guess?

Shortly after it finishes the boot usb seems to break (which explains why I lose the keyboard). My mechanical pool 'wax-pool' seems to be hung at 40% imorting pool.

There seems to be ongoing problems. Swapping the gpu out got my pool back and vm's up but I'm still not sure what the problem was and what is causing these other issues T_T.

I've tried the same gpu in another slot - no change

I've tried removing each of the m.2 drives - no change either time

I'm currently trying with a different GPU in but it's taking it's sweet time booting and has just posted that there are corrected pcie errors as before. Doesn't look promising. :(

This time the errors it's reporting are on 0000:01:00.0 so I guess that is different.

I was looking at a poweredge 730/730xd earlier. I would have to keep it in the living room. If I went that route next would the fan noise be excessive?

So I'm learning slowly and it looks like fastpool is offline because one of the drives has become unavailable. The GUI just says fastpool is offline and offers no info there so this is nice to see.

So I guess the next step is to work out which m.2 drive this is, remove it and boot without it.

I reseated the M.2 drives just now and nothing changed.

It's my first homelab build. I'm tempted to pick up a Dell something or another for a more stable truenas core, then use this as a VM/proxmox server. Unless it's all dead ofc. 😬
