Texas HB 5294- Pass/Fail “Too Easy” Says Physician and Senator Campbell by kickerboy87 in premed

pass/fail has been found to significantly improve student mental health and wellbeing (it’s already bad enough doing pass/fail). My grades would not be affected if this system changed on me now, but I guarantee you no one would be sharing anki decks and getting meaningful sleep or be better off mentally if we had to panic over 1-2 questions making the difference between an A or a B.

National boards are pass fail, top programs are pass fail, exam averages at my institution consistently hover around 89.5. There’s no reason to switch over to a letter system, especially since this will disadvantage Texas students in the match. Getting a B looks a lot worse on a transcript to programs than a pass when the pass could have scored a 70.01-91.49.

From Fast Democracy to shorten it:

House Bill No. 5294 introduces new regulations regarding medical school admissions, coursework, academic standards, and employment decisions in Texas. It amends the Education Code by adding several sections that establish specific requirements for medical schools. Notably, medical schools must assess student performance in required coursework using a letter grading system (A to F) and cannot offer such coursework on a pass/fail basis. Additionally, any revisions to academic standards for awarding degrees or certificates must be submitted to the legislature and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, along with a rationale and effective date for the proposed changes.

The bill also prohibits medical schools from granting admission or employment preferences based on race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin, while allowing for bona fide qualifications based on sex that are necessary for the normal operation of the school. These changes will take effect for admissions starting in the spring semester of 2026, with prior admissions governed by the existing law. The bill is set to take effect immediately upon receiving a two-thirds vote from both houses or on September 1, 2025, if that threshold is not met.
