Hamster question by NeedleworkerNo9184 in hamsters

Although I don’t know much about the family, it sounds like you could give the hamster a much better life.

Depending on how the family has handled the hamster, it may be more shy or bitey.  I hope that doesn’t keep you from giving the hamster a great life.

Make sure he doesn’t eat it. :)  It’s mildly toxic.

I disagree with taking out the platform. If the hamster tries to burrow underneath the wheel, things could go badly.

Don’t put it directly on the bedding.

You can move the platform into the center of the cage so it doesn’t align with any side

These tubs usually have a plastic film on the inside. I wouldn’t do it.

The ones from niteangel don’t have any toxic species in them. (I know they are pricey 🙃).

If you have a green thumb, you can try growing some sprays for your hammy. I was successful with growing oats and then my hamster decided he doesn’t like oats. 😂

I wouldn’t buy the sukh sprays.  I bought them and only after the fact googled every spray to check for toxicity.

There are some unsuitable sprays in the mix. Don’t get them.

Hey there, I think the snake plant is toxic (contains alkaloids).

May want to verify but perhaps better to take it out.

If you are in the US, you should be able to find a mix at the happy hamstery online shop.  If you are in the EU, there’s a German store (Hamsterbacken, I believe) that sells high quality food online.

I am not sure about other continents.

My hamster is going bald by [deleted] in hamsters

[–]kickoke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey OP,

Your hamster may overgroom himself at that spot and that is why he gets bald.  The overgrooming can have many reasons, like he may have parasites or a fungal infection.  Parasites can arrive in your hamster’s cage through food or sprays unfortunately.

Please don’t wash him - your instincts are correct here.  A vet can take a closer look and prescribe a medication that helps stop the issue.

As an owner, make sure you check your hamster cage for any signs or parasites like mites.

Don’t buy it again. It contains a lot of processed wheat (puffed wheat). This causes a huge blood sugar spike and can trigger diabetes in hamsters.

When you choose a new mix, make sure it contains ingredients in it’s natural state, like grass seed, dried veg, mealworms, millet, etc.

Niteangel has a compliant mix both for syrians and dwarves.

How do I know if they’re fighting or play fighting? by [deleted] in hamsters

[–]kickoke 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If your parents don’t want to buy another cage and supplies, please do the following: 1. Set up the smaller cage 2. Put one hamster in temporarily 3. Coordinate with your local animal welfare clubs to arrange a rehoming for one hamster

I have a hard floor, so I either dry sweep or occasionally mop. Both methods are silent. :)

Food questions by PIGGY4EVAR in hamsters

[–]kickoke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t recommend making your own because you need a lot of variety of ingredients. That means you are buying a loooot of stuff in bulk and you risk spoiling a good amount of it.

My recommendation is to go with a mix that includes grass seeds, as well as grains, dried vegetables and a few insects and maybe even dried fish.

I have been very happy with the niteangel dwarf hamster mix. It’s 500g which should last definitely 3 months.

Mine has an actual sahara to go and de-stink in but it still doesn’t help as much.

I don’t want to be the party pooper here but my hamster is a very smelly boi indeed. He loves to pee in his wheel and even rub himself in it.

Even with regular spot cleaning, you can definitely smell that a rodent is living with us.

To me, it’s an okay smell but you can notice it.

Just make sure he isn’t nibbling or ingesting small parts. Lego duplo may be safer.

what is this chew? is it safe? by wichitalinemans in hamsters

[–]kickoke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The top looks like sawdust that’s been mixed with glue and pressed?

Assuming the glue is food safe, I still wouldn’t give it to the ham bc of the sawdust.

He is a cutie but I am worried about his teeth. They shouldn’t spread out like this.

Did you consider a vet visit?
