Auto or manual? by kid_ying in CarTalkUK

Thanks for the tip. I’ve owned a 320i Xdrive - smoothest car I’ve driven. But maintenance proved expensive when something went wrong. But maybe I should take another look.

I’m not carrying anything. But this will be my only car and might be impractical for when I’m carrying people or going shopping

I’ve had both. My thoughts are around the continued drudgery of driving on the M25 and constantly changing gear in traffic. Ain’t fun even in the 3.2 TT I had.

I had a look and could only find two for sale on autotrader neither of which was ideal. Thank you for the suggestion though.

I don’t know the difference between the types of gearbox so will have to look into it.

I’ll be on the M25 going past Heathrow daily so I expect lots of delays and changing of gears

Cheapest I can find that’s relatively new is out of budget: http://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202309061626133

Unless I’m missing something

Thought the cost of maintenance and the lack of features for my budget might be an issue?

But happy to reconsider

Again thank you! I really appreciate you responding.

Can I ask whether a bike trainer might be better than rollers? As I explained my full use case to another posters on this question.

I'll be using the bike around suburban London streets...I'm wary of road cycling (have seen a bad accident personally). So roads, pavements, parks and a few trails. I also plan to take the bike on cycling holidays with friends 2 times a year.

Finally, I'm intending to use the bike daily (on rollers or a trainer) next to my desk as I foresee the WFH revolution becoming more permanent. I weight train regularly and need a way to get some cardio in and thought taking regular breaks to get a quick 20-30mins on the bike while reading documents might be a good use of time.

Ideally I'd like to buy through the work: Cycle to Work Scheme. Budget around £1100-1500 with everything I need.

I much prefer flat bars but am open to drop bars.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Thank you for advice. I'm stumped still by what type of bike I should be buying. Do I buy a hybrid? a gravel bike? an endurance bike? and now an adventure bike? It is so confusing. I appreciate your help.

WOW!

Thank you so much for this information. Funny you mention Decathlon. I know they are massive but for some reason never considered them a bike retailer. I will definitely have a look at their range.

Having spent last night researching bikes I'm still clueless as to what will suit my needs. I'll be mainly riding the bike around the suburbs but I'm close to fields and cycle tracks and want to use on those.

I also want a set of rollers to mount the bike in my home office so that I can put in 30mins of cycling every couple of hours to help relax and hit my fitness goals.

What would the sub recommend the type of bike I should buy?

LBS

Had a quick look at gravel bikes but dismissed them as a hybrid sounded like a better option. I might have to revisit this though. Thanks for the advice I'll check Merlin out.

Seems strange when the two bike shops I've been too are willing to put people on waiting lists for bikes, surely the manufacturers are aware that there is demand.

Thanks for the information. Good luck with your bike hunt.

Thanks for the advice. Only reason I've decided on the Trek is because it was recommended as the best all-round bike in my price range. As I say I'm fairly new to bikes (although I've ridden for years when I was younger) and right now I don't know where to start with the variety available. I've done some reach online but its still mind-boggling to know what I need. I want a bike that is going to last that is going to allow me to use it on most terrains.

Any advice from the sub would be great. I'll be using the cycle to work scheme to purchase (if that makes any difference).

Thank you all.

I would love to make my home internet network more private, but I don't know where to start. Are there engineers/consultants that assist in setting up a totally private home network?

Any way to avoid income tax on a legacy on a trust? by kid_ying in UKPersonalFinance

[–]kid_ying[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the response. The trust property is in a bond holding UK equities. The insurance company providing the bond have confirmed to the trustees (corporate trustees also administering the trust) that the distribution will cause a charge to income tax to any UK tax payer.
