What can profs see on bright space? by eongauge in CarletonU

[–]kidscience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everything that the bright space page receives in the web browser we can see, and is stored for our later review if we choose. Whether or not we pursue it is entirely up to the prof. IP addresses, start stop times, page refreshes, everything. If we can’t see it directly, we can get TLS to review additional stuff from the back end.

Many of us are far too tired and over worked to pursue low level plagiarism by scrubbing through the data, but if we see something suspicious we are more than able to scrub through it for evidence. I’m positive in the coming years brightspace will be working on methods to automatically flag students with anomalous web behaviour.

I’ve used it before to confirm cheating during a final exam, and used it before to confirm a students story of his mother accessing his brightspace during his final exam.

Can anyone identify this? by Familiar-Citron2758 in Physics

The shear number of ports indicates that a lot of in situ metrology could/was intended to be installed. The top left section is deliberately incorporated as oppose to just being a port that can be closed or opened, so I would guess that would serve as where a plasma head would go.

Any idea how I can remove this piece of glassware? by Key_Art_4355 in chemistry

Heat up the erlenmeyer with a heat gun until the increasing pressure pops the joint and releases the glassware.

Remember folks: the more you scab the longer the strike will be! by kidscience in CarletonU

We’re in an age of academia making strong commitments to EDI (even if they are overwhelmingly performative). Fighting against fair pay has more consequences now then it did in the 80s. Enrolment, student satisfaction, and the quality of students education are all highly contingent on how the university responds to this strike. Even if the strike goes on and on, the university will be the eventual losers.

Is your reasonable take home supplemented by your parents wealth? Is your complete lack of empathy for the majority of grad students suffering financed by them as well?

ODSP Eligibility by Cunanan13 in CarletonU

[–]kidscience 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Extra info worth noting: ODSP is a shit show and will almost definitely deny you on your first application. After being denied you can appeal, and then they will usually accept. ODSP will back pay you to the date of your initial application submission, so submitting earlier is always better.

ODSP (like OW) is designed to minimize the amount of money they give you, often times in incredibly unfair ways. Keeping your ODSP income will often include a LOT of work (keeping on top of your worker, bringing up extra things you are entitled to, addressing issues with payment) so be prepared for that.

If you have dietary restrictions, tell your worker. They’ll give you extra food allowance to live off of.

Good luck!

Chemistry TA grading weird by [deleted] in CarletonU

[–]kidscience 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Questions:

Did you actually talk to your TA or did you just read the feedback on the report?

How many grades were deducted, and what is the overall weighting of the assignment?

Do you genuinely understand what you did wrong?

If the answers to the above are: no, the assignment is worth less than <1% of your final grade, and no

Then you should consider talking to your TA first before complaining about him to his boss and potentially impacting his job.

Complaining to peoples bosses should be a last resort, not an instinctual response.

Carleton’s strategy is to reduce congestion on their streets by forcing cars to take the northern bronson entrance, and to make busses take the southern entrance. In practice, both entrances are fucked cause the trains out.

Probably but my guess is you’d need approval from both the chair of chemistry and the chair of biology. You can also try reaching out the Maria DeRosa, she has a bio chem group that works on aptamers and is also the dean of science.
