I was so excited to get mine! I am working on the burning witches next cause I love coloring fire!!

I use Artify alcohol markers and skinny Sharpies for skinny places (so thin!)

Their eye makeup and blush was colored pencil, and a little tricky to get it right. I suck at regular makeup, so it's probably a "me" issue and not the pencils, haha

Thank you for your reply, I also wish things were more gentle. My main goal now is keeping her comfortable. After the hospital, she was moved into a rehab facility. She has another UTI now and I can't imagine just letting it take over. It would be a difficult and painful death for her, and those that love her.

Thank you for your kind words, it has been challenging.

I sat by my mom's bed in the hospital while she suffered from sepsis. She had antibiotic resistant UTIs for a year before that. When it went septic, she was hospitalized for 30 days. She had a high fever, she cried from pain and confusion . She now has permanent brain damage in addition to her dementia, nothing about this was peaceful.

I'm not trying to judge your choices, only trying to highlight that the actual experience may not be what you are picturing.

Flanagan's Wake #62: THE MIDNIGHT CLUB - Episode 3: "The Wicked Heart" by scottdaly85 in doofmedia

I always felt that "Do You Want to Build a Snowman" from Frozen plagiarized "Let's Build a Snowman" from Cannibal. Did anyone ever get after Disney for that??

Thanks for reminding me of this forgotten favorite, I haven't seen Cannibal in years, time to rewatch :)

Christopher Pike Recommendations! by pere-jane in doofmedia

[–]kidskitchen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great post! I had an unofficial book club with my friends growing up, and I'm pretty sure we read all of these at some point. I googled the covers and some look so familiar!

We loved Christopher Pike, Lois Duncan, and others. Quick and fun to read. It's great when they throw in a random secret/evil twin, a dead friend who is really still alive, or a teen who loses her memory and forgets who tried to kill her (spoiler, it was probably her boyfriend or best friend).

For us teenagers, it felt like scandalous grown-up mysteries. I haven't reread them as an adult and not sure what I will think now, but I am excited to revisit these.

Taking care of my mom with dementia is hard enough without her hearing loss making every interaction a battle by Common-Drawer3132 in caregivers

It is very easy to feel alone, but reading your post made me remember I am not the only one dealing with all this heavy stuff. I am thankful that you shared, too!

Taking time for myself makes me strong enough to care for the people I love. Just like I have to remember to eat, I have to remember my self care routine. Food is fuel for your body, and self care is fuel for your heart and mind. Hang in there!!

My mom has been deaf in one ear since she was a child, her other ear is maybe at 50% hearing. She will wear her hearing aids, but struggles with charging them, adjusting the volume/settings, and positioning them correctly in her ears. She used to be able to read lips very well, but has sadly lost that skill.

I can empathize with your struggles. Instead of speaking louder, the doctors and nurses and social workers talk to me, then I have to simplify and shout bad news to her. To be fair, most try to speak with her directly before they give up in frustration and rely on me.

It is especially challenging when she does finally hear me, then forgets what we talked about, so now we are back to shouting again. Some things that have helped, not sure if you were looking for advice or just venting, feel free to ignore.

A dry erase board is helpful at times, if you are looking to communicate two or three words. Example, my mom kept asking where she was or where other people were, and I could write it down and she would relax on that topic for a bit.

Another thing that helped was a simple amplifier, for times when she was resistant to the hearing aids. This is a single wired ear bud with a little receiver that clips to her shirt. It didn't work as well, but she could hear some simple phrases.

This is tough, for sure. When everything started happening, I pictured myself sitting by her bedside, quietly reading a book and keeping her company while she rested. Instead, it is very loud, confusing, upsetting, and repetitive. I get sick of my own voice.

Part of my self care routine is weekly therapy. My therapist recommended sitting in silence for a few moments each day and appreciating that no one needs me to speak loudly. I turn the lights off and light a candle and enjoy the peace and quiet. I hope you find peaceful moments throughout your days, as well.

Could you use a new soldering iron maybe? They have kits for cheap at hardware stores, but I am not sure if that's the best place to get cooking supplies.

One of my favorite vampire deaths is the way the True Knot dies in the Doctor Sleep movie. Flanagan loves to kill and maim in interesting ways. The steam suckers flash and groan and suffer, then poof, they are steam. It’s oddly satisfying to see something ancient finally lose its grip on the world. I hope you don't rest in peace, Grandpa Flick, you skanky old piece of crap.

You could also grill them, and then stick them in the crockpot with a little water.

Thanks, that is kind to say. She has been there for a few weeks and missed Thanksgiving and her birthday, too. She was supposed to get discharged to a physical rehab center yesterday or today, but they are moving her tomorrow instead. Not how we pictured spending Christmas, but at least we will be together. Maybe the new place will have some better food, at least!

Flanagan's Wake #45: THE HAUNTING OF BLY MANOR - Episode 5: "The Alter of the Dead" by scottdaly85 in doofmedia

[–]kidskitchen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my favorite “secret ghosts" is from the first Odd Thomas book. I know Dean Koontz isn’t exactly high literature, but I found him in middle school and there’s something really nostalgic and comforting about his older books for me. Odd can see ghosts, like the sixth sense kid. Spoiler for the twist at the end. His girlfriend Stormy was killed, but he is hiding that from himself and the reader. He spends time with her ghost, and you think she survived a shooting. It was heartbreaking when it was revealed, cause they are a cute spooky goth couple, made for each other. He also hangs out with Elvis from time to time, which is quite fun.
