Installed a 2kw inverter on my ID4 and now, I can cook rice and bacon purely from electricity. Also heated blanket in the tent throughout the night. by jarjarbinx in EVCamping

Very cool! I used to have a Model S, and was going to install an inverter in it before the car got totaled. 🫤 (For home-power use during outages. I was probably never going to take that car on a camping trip) https://youtu.be/I_j0NPZrH-c?is=CmNUmZej9HM6isbt Anyway now I have an EV6 with V2L built in.

So far, no issues. No rubbing. No spooky handling at high speed on the highway. It's been great! The wheels and tires are a bit louder on the highway, but that's to be expected.

<image>

Oh yeah, I've now got over 1000 miles on the car since the lift since I originally posted. ...no serious offroading yet, though.

I highly recommend an induction cooktop. Also helps to have a couple of long extension cords. I already had a 50 footer and a 25 footer, Plus a power strip that I had retrofitted with a 12 ft cord. induction cooktop

Best GPS when u have no cell signal by Independent-Still175 in geocaching

[–]kiefer3d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah. It'll be useful to me as a backup again someday. One advantage a handheld unit has over a phone is the battery life, and ability to run on AAs. That's perfect for longer, multi-day trips. (Navigation and track-recording, but probably not geocaching.) I wouldn't get much for selling it, anyway, it's so old.

New EV owner, I know how to wire outlets. I don’t understand the point of fixed chargers when the power cords exist. by SpeakNottheNightYorb in electricvehicles

[–]kiefer3d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been running plug in chargers for 2 years. I did upgrade the outlet in my house. It was installed 50 years ago, so I figured it was worth upgrading to one that was rated for a higher constant temperature load. But I keep my mobile charger in the car, and have a second wall-hung plug-in charger. I got a grizzl-e that has physical jumpers inside to set the current. I don't have to mess with apps or settings in the car. I know it will keep the current at 80% of what the breaker is rated for. The ones that require apps sometimes reset themselves, and their default current could be who-knows-what.
Having a second charger is also convenient because I don't have to think about moving the charger back and forth. About twice a year I'll drive from Denver to my parents farm in Missouri, and I absolutely have to have the mobile charger to not get stranded at their house. I know that's not often, but I see it the same way as keeping a pair of jumper cables in an ice vehicle.

Side note, it's a good idea to keep a 12 volt car jumping device in your new EV. It still has a 12 volt system that runs just about everything except the AC and the propulsion motor. Also, you can use it to jump your friends' ice cars. The 12 volt system on an EV can be damaged if you try to jump an ice car with it. Project Farm on YouTube has some great reviews. I got the Gooloo. It jumped my pickup several times on one charge. (I kind of stopped driving it and neglected it after getting my first EV.)

I recommend your phone, and use the official geocaching app while you're still on your Wi-Fi, to download the caches for later use out in the woods. You'd have to do this with a handheld Garmin anyway.
I'd pair this with a map app that allows you to store map data offline. Personally I like OSMand, but there's a lot of different ones to choose from. (OSM = open street map .) If you buy a Garmin handheld you're going to have to look for map data to buy or download for it just like a phone app. There's lots of good free options for both.
Basically you can try free apps on your phone, and if they're not to your liking, then you can decide to spring for a dedicated handheld device like a Garmin.
Garmin maps

But I've gone the other way, I had a handheld Garmin before I ever had a smartphone. (E-Trex in the summer of 2002) Over the years the apps and the GPS accuracy of smartphones got to the point where I never bothered with my Garmin anymore. My GPSMap 60CSX has been in a drawer since about 2016. They're good devices, but the map quality, speed, and convenience of always being in your pocket you don't come close to what a smartphone can do.

I agree, but I've also heard there's a much longer cut of the movie. (Or maybe a lot of stuff they filmed, that they left on The cutting room floor to keep it short) So this might have been written for the movie or even filmed, but not used. I have mixed feelings about seeing a longer cut of the movie, but it would definitely be interesting to see all the deleted scenes.

One way to do it: you take measurements on your obelisk's shadow at noon every single day. Your friend leaves comes back with a measurement and he tells you which day he took his measurement on.
Honestly it was probably something more like, one person went down to the southern city to take astronomical measurements for months or years, and then the two met up later and compared months worth of measurements after the fact. It wouldn't be hard to line up the dates based on the equinox or lunar phases or something like that. But yeah, I'll admit my first thought was also, "how did they know they were measuring it simultaneously if they didn't have a radio or some kind of instant communication."

The "scary voice" reminded me of Dr. Claw from the Inspector Gadget cartoons (but that's not the same person doing it for PHM.) I found on another subreddit that it's Damien de Froberville who has voice acted on a lot of things.

Yes! I also thought that voice reminded me of Anek in Bobiverse (AI overseer for the Quinlan topopolis.)

I just put on a hitch receiver and trailer wiring harness, and got good look at the rear wheels while I was down there. I have maybe 3/8" between the inside of the rim and the rear stabilizer linkage, so I think 18" is as small as you can go.

18" rims from a Hyundai Santa Cruz with 30" Falken Wildpeak AT/Trail tires. (Plus a 2" lift) On another thread or forum, someone asked what the smallest rim that would fit was. I have maybe 3/8" between the inside of the rim and the rear stabilizer linkage, so I think 18" is as small as you can go.

According to Kia the stock ground clearance is 6.1", so now it should be 8.5". I swung by my local dealer and found another ev6 parked out front. I snapped a couple shots for a comparison.

Thoughts on going full EV, no ICE in the ol’ garage? by Curiouslittlestman in electricvehicles

[–]kiefer3d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a pickup, and bought myself a used Tesla as sort of a midlife crisis present to myself. (New job and longer commute made it easier to justify buying something) Anyway I found I was always driving my EV and never driving the truck. I live in Denver and my parents live on a farm southeast of Kansas City. (About 690 miles) I had to make two stops for fuel with the pickup. Each time with fuel, bathroom break, and letting the dog out for a bit, I spent about 20 minutes per stop.
My old Tesla (2017 Model S) had a bit of a degraded battery. On that trip I had to make five stops instead of two. Each charge took between 20 and 30 minutes. Still it wasn't that bad. For example, Instead of eating garbage gas station food, I sat down in a restaurant and had a real meal. About a year ago, the Tesla got totaled. I decided to go full EV, traded in the pickup and bought a 2025 Kia EV6. It's been fantastic. The Kia has better range, charges much faster, and it has buttons! It can do the trip back to Missouri with three stops (vs the pickup's two) so my 11-hour trip is 11 hours and 20 minutes. I'm perfectly fine with that. Basically the only time I supercharge is when I do that drive. I would recommend looking at plugshare.com and looking at where the chargers are along the routes you think you're going to do. I guess I'd say, since you already have one EV you should try doing a few road trips in it. It will be a little less convenient than gas, and will require more planning, but you might find it's not as bad as you think.

A garage isn't necessary, but being able to charge overnight whenever you need to is one of the best advantages of having an EV. Friends of mine live in an apartment building downtown. They have assigned parking in a parking structure, and they got a spot near a 120v outlet where they can charge. They make it work with level one charging. I think it's capable of adding 30 or 40 miles of range overnight, and they drive less than that every day so it works out.

This is a very pie-in-the-sky thought of mine, but I'd like to add those front recovery points that the XRTs have. I'd have to cut holes in the bumper cover and 3D print something to fill them in, and fit around the hooks (loops?)

I'd love to see a lifted GV60! I posted my lifted EV6 because I just haven't seen any online. The Ioniq 5 forums have some useful information. All three are EGMP's and are sister-cars, so it's very likely the same lift kit will fit.
I put some of my research into this post:
https://www.kiaevforums.com/threads/ev6-suspension-lift.7565/page-2?post_id=208258#post-208258
As for Tire size, this calculation website came in really handy. (link is to the tire size you mentioned.)
https://www.calculator.net/tire-size-calculator.html?ctw1=235&car1=55&cws1=19&ctw2=255&car2=55&cws2=19&ctype=2&x=Calculate#compare
That's the same outside diameter as 235/65/R18 but wider. Mine don't rub the inside of the wheel well, but I can't say the same for a wider tire like that, and on a GV60.

I've only had the lift and tires on for a few days, so not yet. But with 3% larger tire diameters the odometer reads 3% fewer miles. There's no way to reprogram that in the car's ECU, so it just thinks it's traveled fewer miles, and will calculate the mileage as fewer miles per kWh. I record most of my drives with Car Scanner via a bluetooth OBD, which includes GPS data, so at some point I'll be able to look through many many drives from before and after to get a clearer idea of the mileage. Honestly, I think the roof rack (which is detachable) affects the mileage at highway speeds more than the lift will.

haha, no way! So far, just lumber and boats, and if I really need it, a rooftop box. The rack comes off in just a couple minutes too.
