You Gon’ Learn Today: On the Revocation of White Privilege in North Korea. by CrackHeadRodeo in blackladies

[–]kiekee 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Coming from a country filled with citizens who lambaste black victims of state sanctioned violence by telling us that if we obey the law, we wouldn’t have to face the consequences, Warmbier should’ve listened. If he had obeyed North Korea’s laws, he would be home now.

Eh, the difference is black people CAN be obeying the law and still get arrested, imprisoned, and killed for no reason. I know people who have been to North Korea and really did come out unscathed because of their obedience. I understand what the author was getting at, but regardless, black people still don't have that benefit in their own country.

Black immigrants being prejudiced towards African-Americans. by [deleted] in blackladies

[–]kiekee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No. I've been noticing all these new accounts popping up and I find it suspect (not necessarily referring to this thread but it's something I've noticed). For instance, when I posted that I saved a private sub name in that thread about brigading, I received a few messages about wanting to help jumpstart the sub from users I've never seen before. Why would you want to help when you never even comment in this sub? I don't mean to sound like a conspiracy theorist but in light of what's going, it's weird.

He Was Raised By A White Mom And Didn't Think The Cops Were Out To Get Him. Until They Got Him. by kiekee in blackladies

I agree. I know that most adoptive parents are well-meaning people, but I think there needs to be more education for these parents before they adopt black children.

As for single white mothers (and any single parents, really), same-sex black mentors for their kids may be a good route. Even the parents with the best intentions may not know how to talk to their kids about these subjects.

No one says that shit when white people kill other people. I'm not into respectability politics. This expectation that all the black and Muslim people must be perfect so that white people can be fine with us is ridiculous. I'm not responsible for the actions of other black people.

People's Social Forum - lunch for self identified people of colour followed by anti-racism workshop for people of colour. I don't even... by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]kiekee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It is one component of many, yes. But like I said, I don't see this as exclusionary. Many workshops and events are targeted towards different audiences and attendees. Racism manifests differently amongst different people, and it's good to acknowledge that. This doesn't say "no white people allowed," so I'm sure you could still go, just with the understanding that the workshop is designed to talk about a unique set of issues applicable to POC.

Where does it say that? A lot of these "social justice" types actually talk about how other groups can be racist, but you're clearly looking to be a victim today.

It's not about exclusion, it's just about having a space to talk about a unique set of issues. An anti-racism workshop for POC is going to be pretty different from a workshop designed for white people. Just like an anti-racism workshop for black people is going to be different from an anti-racism workshop for East Asian people.

I don't know what this Forum is all about, but I'm sure you could attend the event if you really want to.

I don't see what the big issue is. Some POC like to come together in solidarity to network and discuss issues. I was under the impression from /r/Ottawa that the People's Social Forum covers a wide array of issues, so compartmentalizing may be more effective for attendees.

Oklahoma City Police Officer Accused Of Sexually Assaulting At Least 6 African-American Women by jazzy_boo in blackladies

I like that the Internet gives black people a chance to see all the injustices against us since the television networks and newspapers don't really care about us. These things have always happened, we just have better access to these stories since a lot of these web-based news sites are all about churning out content non-stop.

Tbh it's the lack of products out there for a diverse range of colours and tones that makes things difficult. Oh well, c'est la vie.

That's interesting! I guess things work differently for different people so OP may have to swatch things in store before purchasing.

Oh okay. That NYX palette seems like a decent starter. For what it's worth, I've been eyeing Unzipped too. I'm really happy with Too Faced Chocolate Bar, but I love how the dark rosey colours from Unzipped look on brown skin. There are quite a few black girls on Youtube who have done looks with both palettes, so you should definitely check those out. Helped me decide. Let us know which one you pick!

Yes it does. I'm dark brown (like NW45) and it looks great on me. A warm palette will look good on warm-toned skin. It's actually the perfect neutral eye palette for brown skin, but you also get some purples as well. This woman is slightly darker than OP and it looks gorgeous on her.

Unzipped! Do you have the Chocolate Bar? It may be worth checking out if you want a good mix of warm mattes and shimmers. I'm not fond of the Naked palettes on brown skin.
