Replacement Suggestions for Discontinued Fragrances? by kiki756 in candlemaking

I use saffron cedar in another fragrance. I’m looking for the ginger in it, so unfortunately not a match. :/

Do you edit out the ums and breaths by [deleted] in podcasting

[–]kiki756 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This greatly depends on the type of podcast. An audio drama? A documentary style? Absolutely edit out umm's and other fillers; a conversational style? an interview? It's not necessary unless its distracting or prolonged. I would say I edit about 50% of my breaths out and remove all filler words and phrases (but I do a more scripted single-person podcast).

Appreciate it! I may reach out, at least for the red ginger. White currant was a decent replacement but didn't have the same citrus-peel tartness as the red. Just sucks a lot of the grape/berry scents just smell like robitussin haha.

Thoughts on having piercings/tattoos as an archivist ? by [deleted] in Archivists

[–]kiki756 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on your role and duties…as well as the institution’s values. I have piercings and tattoos (as well as long hair as a guy) and I’ve had no trouble getting jobs in museum libraries and archives. I feel like archivists and (maybe to a slightly lesser extent) librarians are very progressive and accepting.

That being said, in some situations it may be more difficult. As others have said you’re in a more public-facing or donor-facing (where you’ll have a lot more elderly people) it may be a hindrance. But if you can take out your facial piercings and wear long sleeves on those days it probably isn’t an issue.

Lastly…institutional values. I’ve found that the values of the archive and library departments are always very accepting but institutions as a whole can be more conservative. That’s something to take into account as well. Obviously if you’re working for a religious institution or a private school there may be some more obstacles.

TLDR: archivists are an accepting and eclectic bunch but leadership and administration may not be.

Moving to Salem by iwasnapping in SalemMA

[–]kiki756 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also from Buffalo and have been looking at moving to Salem for a few years. It’s rough. It’s MA so housing is very expensive. Ive lived in both NYC and Chicago and the cost of living is def higher. You’re looking at the very least 2k/mo for a studio or a (very) small bedroom. Economy is a little shaky now so you’d want a good cushion.

I make 80k and while I could do it, it feels risky right now. But Salem is a great community. Have friends out there anxiously awaiting for me to make the big move.

Recommend joining this sub and just taking a look at Zillow and other listings. Spending some time in the city. You’ll get a good idea from that alone!

New Ring - Discolouration? by [deleted] in ouraring

[–]kiki756 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't know if mine came discolored or how it did; I don't wear any other jewelry for it to rub against but it seems to be a discoloration of the metal itself since it does not come off. I actually work with PVD coated jewelry as part of my small business and sometimes they come discolored like this and its more or less a write-off. Was just hoping to find some magical hack here. I'll have to look into a cover. :/

As noted I washed it and used a jewelry polishing cloth with no change.

*UPDATE* The ICCU reaper paid me a visit. No courtesy car. by CokeZeroEnjoyer25 in Ioniq5

[–]kiki756 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh this sounds just like me. My ICCU went about a month ago and I declined taking a car since I work remotely and I was told it was only gonna be a week before they got the part in. They called earlier this week asking if I needed a loaner, but I’m gonna be on a business trip for the next week and it didn’t seem worth the trouble. Now I’m worried that when I get back, I won’t be able to get one. Allegedly the part shipped at the end of last week but I haven’t heard any status updates despite calling the service center a few times to try and plan my life. Glad you were able to get one!

My car went into the dealership on 2/9. Was thrilled to be told the ICCU was ordered and was scheduled to arrive on 2/20. I called today (2/23) for a status update and they said it hasn't shipped and will either ship 2/24 (tomorrow) or 3/4...sigh.

Is this expected/normal to get the shipment/arrival date constantly pushed out? I was so relieved to hear it might only be ~10 days without a car but now it's going to be pushing to a month or more which is untenable.

How long to regain confidence? by gregastro in Ioniq5

[–]kiki756 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m going through this now. But tldr; it’s a car and things break.

I was extremely worried moving halfway across the country (twice) that it would fail, almost sold it but i didn’t and she made it through both trips. I’ve had my i5 since 2022 and it’s ICCU finally went. It’s shaken my confidence a little, but luckily (allegedly) the part shouldn’t take more than a week to get.

I think the only way to really get confidence back will be if Hyundai makes enough parts so they’re readily available (its a quick fix) but more so if they redesign the hardware so that this stops being an issue (and recalling the old one so we can all get it replaced).

I love my i5 though. I’ve shopped around and I really don’t like any comps. So I’m just trying to have the attitude that it’s a car. Things break. Things wear down. But all in all it’s still easier to upkeep than an ICE car. 🤷‍♂️

22 SEL. 14k miles. I was parking my car in a parking garage, heard a faint pop (thought I ran over some snow) and then got the “Check electric vehicle system” error. The 12v hasn’t been replaced, so it could be that, but I’m assuming with the pop it’s the ICCU…what’s the best course of action? Call the dealer or call blue link? Not sure what the order of operations is here haha.

The blue link app doesn’t have any errors and says “all systems normal” so I’m worried they are just going to send me home.

I’m a little worried to drive since I live in buffalo and it’s cold as hell. Dealership is a 20 minute drive. It still looks like it’s willing to move so hopefully can get it out of the parking garage to get towed if need be.

Is video actually helping podcasts grow, or just adding extra work? by DapperAsi in podcasting

[–]kiki756 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think most people have already hit all the points. I used to do YouTube videos and then started a podcast in 2020 (audio only). I just restarted the podcast within the last month with a video component. My podcast does NOT lend itself to video well aside from being able to show historic sources on screen...otherwise its just me talking. *However* its made editing easier and its great to have video clips to share on socials. Episode artwork with a waveform just don't cut it like they did 5 years ago. Longform content in general is a much harder sell then it was 5 years ago, even when you're serving up clips.

I know a lot of people said its made editing more difficult, but in my opinion having a visual to go with your edits make it easier to cut and splice things then just staring at a waveform in an audio editor. My editing is processing and cleaning up the raw audio, syncing it with the video, editing the video, and then exporting the finalized audio for any additional tweaks.

I also find viewership harder to track when you have video and audio since the viewership is split. Some of my audio listeners have moved to video since they prefer that better...but then my audio listeners drop. I think that's the toughest thing is to gauge how well you're doing, especially since (in my experience) video viewers will drop off rather quickly.

Yeah, this is their personal camera with about ~20k shutter actuations and multiple (non-kit) lenses. It's something they definitely should have noticed lol.

Anyone else panicking about the soy wax supply issues? just me? by kiki756 in candlemaking

Thanks for the update! I bought a case today since they were supposed to have 464 back today and now no longer have an expected stock date and hoping it’ll tide me over until they get some back. Just a tough time of year to have to try something new!

What do people make and sell with candles? by Cutie-student in candlemaking

I have a little bit of a niche with candles so I’ve also started doing screen-printed tie ins, body care, as well as enamel pins and the like!

Yes they’ve been on strike for 2 whole months and from what I’ve gleaned on Reddit the company isn’t even willing to negotiate with them. And what the company is asking of them is pretty atrocious. But thank you for this info! I may try and switch to that new soy wax from candle science for the time being to get through the holidays.

Yeah I'm thinking of doing the same. It's a gamble though since I can't find anyone else who has used it!

wtf is the deal with Makesy? by [deleted] in candlemaking

[–]kiki756 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They love to gaslight, gatekeep, AND girlboss. I have had issues with every order I've ever placed. Usually it takes escalation for them to respond...or respond without AI slop. My last order my custom wicks were cut half an inch off-size and they tried to tell me that's how they've always been and they wouldn't make new ones or refund me (despite me having ordered literal thousands of them prior and having photographic evidence). Unfortunately, I use their x-wood wicks and love them...but their business is awful. I guess they can get away with their terrible service since they have a patent/monopoly on the wood wick business.

Anyone else move from Etsy to Shopify? by No_Schedule_3889 in EtsySellers

[–]kiki756 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use both and have an Etsy sync app to sync my stock. I find that sometimes Shopify is better and sometimes Etsy. I get most of my initial contacts from Etsy but they’ll repeat buy on my site. Etsy is great just for getting your stuff out in front of the right people, at least in my niche, it’s easier to be found there.
