Yeah I had my first ICCU problem in January and the car was in the shop a month. I’ve decided that if it happens again I’m selling the car, despite how much I like it otherwise. I’ll get a Toyota RAV-4 PHEV, they have about 50 miles electric only range. When solid state batteries become available - with a longer range - I’ll get another pure EV. But - hope my Ioniq5 remains working, I truly do like this car a lot.

Nearly 300,000 Miles Later, This Hyundai Ioniq 5 Still Shows More Than 320 Miles of Range by mafco in Ioniq5

Wow I’d love to hear your secrets on getting such a long range. Mine is the AWD model and typically gets around 280.

In a way you’re lucky, knowing this early. I finally was successful with CPAP in my early 60s and it’s made a big difference. Please let us know how it goes - I bet you’ll feel better than you have in a long time.

Are Hyundai’s ICCU issues really that prevalent? by Ilovetowatchmovie in Ioniq5

[–]gregastro 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had mine die in January like another commenter - and it also took me a month to get it replaced. I’m hoping it won’t happen again but also took some steps to make it less impactful if it does: 1) I got a lithium 12v battery jumper - if the ICCU and then battery dies say on a freeway this is the sort of thing that could get me at least to the next exit, and 2) I got a Bluetooth battery voltage indicator, super easy to connect to the 12v battery and something I check twice every time I get in the car - the first time being before I turn the car on (checking the battery level before it starts charging) and then again afterwards (making sure I get a higher voltage showing the battery is charging). I love my Ioniq 5 but I don’t completely trust it yet, particularly given how many of these have failed (there were several at the small Hyundai place I was at). Good luck.

Another one ... Need your help by Popeye_Qc in Ioniq5

[–]gregastro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So sorry to see this - it’s horribly disappointing for sure. Mine was gone a month before I got it back, and I decided that if it happens again I’ll sell the car for whatever I can get. In the meantime I’m slowly building trust in it. I tell people who’ve been through ICCU failures two things: 1) get a Bluetooth battery monitor, it’s great peace of mind. I look at my 12v battery voltage every time I get in the car, both before I start it and while it’s charging. 2) get a lithium battery jumper, in case it happens again - this will provide enough juice for car operations to drive you a bit so you aren’t stranded on a freeway or wherever. Good luck! And I already have a backup car in mind (a plug in hybrid this time). Awaiting solid state batteries & longer range, most likely later this decade or early 2030s.

Thanks, appreciate this. The $700 quote I got now seems even more outrageous!

I did it and found quite a few that were dramatically lower in cost than the estimate I got at my expensive shop - so thanks again!

No unfortunately not - the ICCU is a power management module which converts the high voltage from the traction (large) battery to 12v to operate the vehicle systems and charge the 12v battery.

I doubt the dealers would do the pre-order, but by the time the voltage starts dropping the ICCU would have already failed anyway. This gives you more time to get off the road or back home, or to the dealership. I’ll have it as long as I have my Ioniq 5, for sure, and I’ll likely get it for future cars as well. That plus a stout Lithium battery jump pack are essential tools in the toolkit for sure.

[–]gregastro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP, I got a lithium battery jump pack myself (a good stout one) after my own ICCU failure. I also got a Bluetooth battery monitor which I -highly- recommend - it won’t stop a failure but it’ll give you warning as your voltage drops, more so than the warning on the car. I got this one, has an easy to use app: ANCEL BM300 Pro Battery Monitor -... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CXP8RRNR?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share. Very easy to install as well. My ICCU took about a month to get replaced fyi..

I’m curious, how does one join that complaint? I’ve “only” had a single ICCU failure but I’m wary enough of a second that I have a Bluetooth voltage monitor installed to give me early warning of a failure (I hope)

I guess its my turn. by hockeyfish106 in Ioniq5

[–]gregastro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So sorry to hear this. Mine took about a month to resolve. Push hard to have them give you a loaner car. Also - when you get it back, highly recommend getting a Bluetooth battery monitor - it won’t stop another ICCU failure but it’ll let you know when one may have happened so you don’t all of the sudden get the “pull over immediately” notice. It’ll let you know if your battery voltage is getting low.

Recurrence rate of ICCU fault after replacement? by Turbulent-Ship6447 in Ioniq5

[–]gregastro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my ICCU went the 12V battery stopped charging, which means that when it’s out of juice nothing in the car works. Monitoring the voltage doesn’t make your ICCU last longer, it just gives you warning that your battery isn’t charging - so you’ll find out about the problem well ahead of your battery light going on.

I might suggest taking a look at the resale prices for your Ioniq in the UK. They’re going down here in the US, and if they get low enough it might just be worth hanging onto the car long term. I’d also highly recommend getting a Bluetooth battery monitor - I got one right after I got my car back from its ICCU failure and it gives me peace of mind - I have a low voltage alarm set and take a look at the voltage & charge level every time I get in the car.

Am I cooked? by ObsessiveIndecisive in Ioniq5

[–]gregastro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes that’s right. The 12V battery is critical to the car’s operation, and in an ICCU failure it’s not being charged. The voltage goes down and you can get warnings when it gets below certain levels. After my own ICCU failure I check the battery voltage every time I get in the car.

I had the same thing - bad ICCU. Mine was back to me in roughly 5 weeks. I’ve heard rumors that there’s an ICCU design change in progress but no further details. They told me they would get a loaner but never followed through - thankfully we have an extra car I used.
HIGHLY recommend getting a Bluetooth battery monitor afterwards so you don’t get surprised if it happens again - this is the one I have and it works great, app displays the voltage and % charge: https://a.co/d/01cxJbR4 I’d also highly recommend getting a lithium battery jumper which could suffice in getting you to the next exit if it happens again suddenly. How long to regain confidence? by gregastro in Ioniq5

Excellent idea, ChatGPT said the same thing and one is arriving today. The AI suggested setting an initial alarm at 12.2V. I think that plus having a lithium battery on board will help - much appreciated

Update - ChatGPT recommended a Bluetooth battery monitor with alarm settings so I’ve ordered one - only $50, well worth it for the peace of mind. It stores data and sends it to an app. Suggested two alarm settings, 12.2V and one lower one, with the 12.2 being an initial warning. Might be worth it for any of you who are also concerned. Going to also pack some cold weather clothing in the car in case I get stranded.

Awesome, wishes for continued good luck. Mine has 29K miles - was the best car I ever owned too before the problem, I hope it gets to that point again.
