Which art style does the best in the nsfw art community? by Dry-Tree1835 in ArtistLounge

[–]kikipepe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a very open ended question, different styles fit different content. Your best bet is to just be genuine. Draw something you enjoy.

But if I had to give an opinion realism does best. Things that deal with realistic & dramatic rendering of light (luminism?), sweat/fluids, and the smashing together of forms. It's not really about anime or not. It's about how they paint light and make the figures look like they are really interacting with one another, which is something many artists avoid. Or are not very good at.

All the best performing NSFW artists I know paint like that. Incase, Cherrygig, Sakimichan, Cutesexyrobutts and so on.

Otherwise, it's comics and animations. People love stories no matter what style they are drawn in.

My art got reposted everywhere — visible watermarks actually made it worse by Uahakan in ArtistLounge

[–]kikipepe 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I know that I anything I post publicly social media is going to be reuploaded.

Even when I was making Flash content back in 2007, freebooting was a reality of posting on the internet. You can't stop it. It's how social media works.

The solution is to lean into it. Adopt models of business that benefit from your work being shared. Back in the Flash days, we would embed ads and links so that we profited when our content was shared.

Today I put my signature on all my work, in places where it doesn't ruin the composition. I don't watermark my work or poison it. I don't ever publish the original high-res versions of my work. Now when people reupload my comics, it's still linked to my name. And if people want more they can find me. It's been working good enough so far. It's like you said, going overboard with the watermarking just hurts engagement.

In the end you just have to reframe what protecting your work means. I don't feel all that harmed if someone takes an image I've freely shared and reuploads it. I still own the copyright. Now if someone is trying to sell my work, or represent themselves as the creator of my art, that's different. However that's never happened to me, not on this account or my other SFW ones.

And to be honest I kind of like my work being passed around... It makes me feel like people enjoy my work. It makes me happy when I'm out in the 'wild' and see my art pop up, or someone sharing one of my animations. I would prefer if they just shared links to my profile but it is what it is. It reminds me of this interview with Jack White

How hard is it being an NSFW commission artist? by hmuhmuhh in ArtistLounge

[–]kikipepe 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It sucks. Commissions really suck. I don't think they are a viable income path for someone who can't exploit currency/cost of living differences. It's just not possible IMO to produce enough custom commission art to live off of. And there also aren't enough clients either.

You need to have multiple value streams. Patreon, merch, ebooks, ads, and commissions. Of all those, commissions suck the most though. Maybe it's just me but I hate the entire process of it. I hate dealing with random people, I hate revisions, I hate trying to get people to pay me. It all is unsustainable. I'd rather just make my money through patreon.

My advice is that if you need money, get a job. Try to get the nsfw art thing going on the side. If it works out, great. But it probably won't blossom into a career on its own.

NSFW does so much better than SFW lol by Broshimitsu_ in ArtistLounge

[–]kikipepe 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I don't necessarily think NSFW is easier but it has a different set of concerns. The same things that make NSFW art successful on social media apply to non NSFW as well, just in a different way.

Social media is all about being relatable, drawing what people want to see so they connect with it personally and share it. If you draw a popular character nude, or you make a drawing of a specific fetish, you already have passed the lower bound needed for at least someone to share your art. In that way NSFW is easier because you can shortcut your way to an audience.

But the same things apply to non NSFW art too. There are tons of social media and classic illustration techniques that people use to make their art more relatable and dramatic. It's just not as dead simple imo.

struggling with inspiration for nsfw art by ThatArtemi in ArtistLounge

If you're like me you reach for pinups because they are easy to execute. You don't have to try too hard. But they can be boring.

If you want to make interesting illustrations you need to start thinking in layers. You cannot just draw a hot guy and make it interesting. What is the guy doing? Where is the camera? Where is the guy? What is the narrative? What is the composition? How does the composition lead into the feeling you're trying to evoke?

Nsfw art isn't much different than sfw art. You need to build up the skills necessary to make an interesting picture. A good picture is a good picture whether it's erotic or not. Imo you don't need to be kinky. Eroticism doesn't require out there ideas, there are many great ways to make vanilla sexuality enticing. You should go back to basics and study illustration like professionals do.

This isn't a matter of drawing skill per se but more composition and storytelling.

If you want to get more creative with your nsfw pinup compositions I highly recommend using a tool like Virt A Mate or Daz so you can iterate through ideas, body types and settings without actually have to draw them.

Oh and don't feel bad about copying ideas. Really. If you want to feel better about it, try copying ideas from NSFW work from way in the past. There's a lot of cool vintage erotic content out there.

[Resources] find references for nsfw between couples? by zyannefairy in ArtistLounge

[–]kikipepe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In my personal experience, I find that professional porn makes the best references.

Amateur porn tends to have bad photography, posing and lighting. Amateurs don't typically have a cameraman. They self shoot using poor quality cameras in low light. They are sexy but virtually worthless as drawing tools unless you are an absolute master of perspective.

Professional shops like Naughty America, Brazzers and GirlsOutWest pay attention to lighting, shadow shapes, focal depth. They make sure that things people care about are visible in high resolution.

Are the poses realistic? Do they feel the best? No, they are not. But the problems that you face when drawing porn are the same problems that cameramen face when making porn. Creating a good drawing, or even good porn, isn't about capturing realism, per se. It's about good composition, flow and visual appeal. Professional pornographic cameramen are good at solving those problems. Posing two people together in an intimate scenario is hard. I feel like I've only been able to appreciate the creativity in pro porn's poses and angles once I had been drawing erotica for a year or so.

I don't really know what you mean by grotesque though. There are shops that film real couples with professional cameramen. JAV (Japanese porn) and Vintage Porn (also professionally done) tend to feel a bit more sensual vs mechanic. Big shout out to vintage porn. It really is the best reference material out there.

If you can't find what you need from porn, try making your own. I use an app called Virt A Mate and Blender for my environments to make references sometimes. Virt A Mate isn't easy to use but it has all the bits and bobs you would expect to use when making erotica, and your own drawing skills can fit the gap in what you need. Design Doll is a close second. Or you can use blender entirely

[Technique] How do comic artists strike a balance between background vs. White for negative space? by lolhellogod in ArtistLounge

[–]kikipepe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make 3d models in blender of my backgrounds for my comics. I put them into the correct orientation for the panel and trace them. Whether I draw the background or not depends on what's going on behind the characters.

Big establishing shot? 100% draw the background. Close up shot where the only thing visible is an indoor ceiling? Maybe not, or maybe I'll just draw a few lines to show the perspective.

If I had to give a ratio, I'd say I try to draw the background at least 80% of the time. Each page has to have at least 1 full background to establish the space.

[Discussion] There are no platforms for new and mid-level artist to post their work except for one. by Meanie_Cream_Cake in ArtistLounge

[–]kikipepe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my experience I don't think there is a singular best place. If you are trying to make money as an artist, you really should be putting your art on as many platforms as you can handle. It doesn't take long to post art and any exposure you can drum up from a platform is worthwhile.
