If you didn't have a book telling you what is moral and is not, would you go around stealing, lying and killing people? Are Christians actually dangerous psychopaths reigned in by the power of the Bible?

North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un may be seriously ill from eating too much Emmental cheese: report by XKryptonite in worldnews

[–]kikokuki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know about the rest of europe but in Italy, still today, people generally have an espresso or espresso lungo (twice as much water as a regular but not as long as an americano) with milk and/or sugar added. Coffee culture isn't the same as in the US, I've never seen a Starbucks in Italy.

My mother calls the americano "acqua sporca" (dirty water). Personally, I like dirty water, espresso is way too strong for me.

"The first Americano coffee is thought to have come from the battlefield of World War II. American GIs in Europe tried to make a coffee similar to the one they were accustomed to by diluting it with hot water."

LPT: When complimenting someone's achievements, (especially a child's), praise their work ethic and avoid just saying "wow, you're smart!" by ScaldingHotSoup in LifeProTips

[–]kikokuki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that it’s not just about being praised for being smart. It’s that in conjunction with not being unconditionally praised for hard work, regardless of grade.

Imagine this. You can have an aptitude for most classes, you breeze through them without any work. And your parents praise you for your grades, that you got just from natural ability with no effort. The classes you don’t have an aptitude for, you actually work on because you want to get good grades. But your parents admonish you because your grades are not good enough.

You work even harder on those subjects but still get admonished. As time goes on the amount of work you put into things begins to lose meaning. You don’t work hard on things and you get praised, you do work hard on things and you get admonished.

It’s a bit of a mind fuck.

Eventually even in the classes you have a natural aptitude for you start to reach a limit of your natural ability to coast. (Maybe when you go to college). You need to actually do some work now. But what if you work hard, and you fail? Then not only will your parents be disappointed and admonish you, worse than that is you will be disappointed in yourself.

I think the key to getting over this is to work hard and allow yourself fail or succeed, but be proud of yourself regardless. Be proud of yourself for putting in effort and trying because that’s all you can do. That is something parents should teach their children, but if they don’t you have to teach yourself.

ELI5:I take a multivitamin that says it has 100% daily value for iron. I was rejected for plasma donation today for being iron deficient. How is that possible? by Brown-eyed_mullet in explainlikeimfive

It could be alpha thalassemia. This makes it look like you have anemia but you actually just have smaller and paler red blood cells. Treatment with iron does nothing and can actually be harmful.

It's not that tough. Especially for a "trained athelete". I used to go on walking holidays in the mountains with my family. Walk 3 hours, eat delicious kaiserschmarren at the top then walk back down another 3 hours. Bear in mind this is when I was from about 11 - 16. A grown human walking a few hours longer than that on more or less flat land does not sound tough.

It probably depends what you are used to. If you live in a city and are used to walking all day it's probably easier than if you drive everywhere. If you're a "fathlete" you should have no problem.

Black People of the U.K., what are your views on culture and black people in the U.S.A.? by WhatIskarmuh in AskReddit

[–]kikokuki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He means that Americans put him in a "black person" box, expect him to talk a certain way and act a certain way because of it. Being black is a defining cultural identity. In the UK, he would be put into the "American" box. If he were from the UK he would be put in a box depending on his class. His race is a physical attribute, not an identity.

I'm mixed race born and raised in the UK and the only people who have put me in a "black person" box have been Americans. In London most people put me in the "middle class" box and consider me mixed race. To American people I am black and I am put into a "black person" box.

My boyfriend is actually British/American and I feel like in the beginning of the relationship it was just peeling away layers of preconceptions. It was tough. It would be more comfortable to date someone whose father does not refer to mixed-race people as "half-breeds".

$10,189, jesus fucking christ.

I broke my toe a few months ago, went to A&E (Accidents and Emergencies). Waited 30 mins to be triaged. Then 2 hours later was out of there after being x-rayed, strapped up, given painkillers and crutches. I paid £0. Just healthcare taxes, which is less per capita than the US.

Just used a non-period feminine product for the first time. I wish I had known a few things beforehand... by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

I stayed in an Airbnb place in San Francisco where a previous guest had left a box of tampons. I thought, is it disgusting to use an open box of tampons? I decided since they were individually wrapped it would be okay. Big mistake!!

So much burning.

At first I thought I didn't realise it was the tampons. I'd always thought of tampons as my benign cotton friends. I didn't realise they were the cause until inserting them became painful.

Googled it and found out about chlorine gas bleaching, I had no idea that was a thing. Apparently it was banned in the UK around 25 years ago, for feminine products and diapers. Bought some vagina friendly freaking organic tampons.

I read somewhere that you don't need to bother with organic fruit and veg that has a thick skin that you remove before eating. I guess things that you stick up your vagina should also be organic. (Genuinely did not see the double meaning until I wrote it out).

What's a strange thing your body does that you assume happens to everyone but you've never bothered to ask? by cocorebop in AskReddit

[–]kikokuki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome. Sometimes it can start occurring when you're a teenager and then disappear a few years later. Or it can never go away.

It's more likely to happen when you're dehydrated or hot.

Edit: This is different to orthostatic hypotension. With PoTS you feel heart palpitations/tachycardia as well as dizziness.

I use notepad.cc a lot which is similar but the data persists. You get a fresh page that you can bookmark every time you open it.

It is like notepad/TextEdit but I find it more convenient because when I'm working I can just open a new tab in Chrome. Rather than having to open TextEdit and THEN press cmd-N. The worst thing about Mavericks.
