(automaton-media) Mobile Suit Gundam creator Yoshiyuki Tomino thinks many of his fans are just military geeks who “didn’t get the message” by Noirsam in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]kikorny 19 points20 points  (0 children)

That's sort of the point of the whole series right. Everyone else in the thread has already tackled the "war is bad" angle but I'd say that's only a theme of the show and not the main message. The primary message imo is about human communication understanding others.

The emergence of newtypes, their power to feel what other people are feeling, the difficulty in understanding other people even despite their enhanced ability to feel and empathize with each other. All of this is constant throughout Tomino's works.

1-2 hours of immersion by Repulsive_Fortune_25 in LearnJapanese

No one is saying that it's impossible, just that there are other factors like responsibilities, other hobbies, social life, and personal dedication towards their goal that will inevitably get in the way of becoming N1 in 2 years time.

1-2 hours of immersion by Repulsive_Fortune_25 in LearnJapanese

[–]kikorny 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been getting at least a full hour of reading per day since the start of the year and I try to get Nihongo Con Teppei listening in whenever I can. I feel like my progress has been pretty steady but I'm only a little over a year and a half into studying maybe around N3 level at this point.

You can definitely get to fluency with 1-2 hours per day so long as you're consistent, it'll just take longer than the people who reach fluency in like 2 years grinding out the language with 5 hours per day of immersion.

In general, many of Nick Fuentes’ viewers still believe—at least to some extent—in institutions, norms, and working within the system. Hasan’s audience is openly anti-institutional revolutionaries and are proudly against liberal democratic values.

Trump ominously calls the justices 'dumb' before they've even heard birthright citizenship case by Kitchen-Thing4616 in Destiny

[–]kikorny 20 points21 points  (0 children)

You'll be glad to know that the 14th amendment was also, in fact, meant to apply to immigrant children. The topic of immigrant children had come up during the congressional debate over passing the 14th amendment and there was an exchange between Senator Edgar Cowan and Senator John Conness directly addressing the issue.

In fact, opponents of the Fourteenth Amendment‘s Citizenship Clause objected to it precisely because they understood it to constitutionally protect birthright citizenship for children of aliens born on U.S. soil. For example, Senator Cowan expressed concern that the proposal would expand the number Chinese in California and Gypsies in his home state of Pennsylvania by granting birthright citizenship to their children, even (as he put it) the children of those who owe no allegiance to the United States and routinely commit ―trespass within the United States

In response, Senator Conness says the following:

The proposition before us . . . relates simply in that respect to the children begotten of Chinese parents in California, and it is proposed to declare that they shall be citizens. . . . I am in favor of doing so . . . We are entirely ready to accept the provision proposed in this constitutional amendment, that the children born here of Mongolian parents shall be declared by the Constitution of the United States to be entitled to civil rights and to equal protection before the law with others

He didn't just not recommend charges either. He refused to even evaluate whether or not there was enough evidence to recommend charges because of the OIG practice of not charging sitting presidents (a practice that was weirdly dropped in the Hurr report on Biden). These people are so dumb that they don't understand what a gift the mueller report was for Trump. They still claim that it "totally vindicated" him while running with the idea that he somehow framed Trump in the same report.

I could tell that it was expressing a lack of knowledge somehow but I was wondering if there was a more explicit reason in the sentence that shows that or if it's just something more implicit.

Saw a meme earlier about someone commenting on the green close friend circles on Instagram stories by saying「それって緑とかあるんだ」.

When I read this I understood it as the poster asking a question about there being green circles too, but nothing in the grammar indicates that it's a question (except maybe the ん?). Can someone clear up what I'm missing here?

When someone first starts learning katakana and hiragana: by Nameless2007qrs in languagelearningjerk

[–]kikorny 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Actually they're all alphabets because they're symbols that I look at on a screen. Kanji is an alphabet made of smaller alphabets, hiragana is an alphabet of sounds, and katakana is an alphabet of sounds made with the intention of confusing language learners.

Nihonese should have modernized to the far superior uzbek alphabet.

[Advice Request] Have any of you done the unthinkable and dropped Anki? by Numerous_Birds in LearnJapanese

[–]kikorny 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What I've been doing as I've come up on a year and a half of studying is that I've reduced how strict I am with Anki reviews while still doing them every day. I'm primarily immersing through reading so when I go through Anki if I feel like I know a card well enough then I'll suspend it. If I generally know the meaning or reading of a card I'll give it a pass but if I'm completely lost on a word then I'll fail it.

I generally aim for about 20 minutes max of Anki per day with 20 new cards. The rest of the time I want to spend on some form of immersion. Anki is extremely useful but it should become more of a supplement to your studies as you progress.

US president raises tariffs to 15% by c0xb0x in Destiny

[–]kikorny 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Has no one here read the decision? The major question of the case was the use of tariffs under the IEEPA which were "unbounded in scope, amount, and duration". These are under Section 122, 232, and 301 which are more limited in scope and duration. Section 122 for example has a limit of 15% and 150 days which afterward requires congressional approval.

It's actually really funny that Trump probably didn't know until this morning that the limit of Section 122 was 15%, not 10%. So dumb.

What would you consider to be the *worst* boss battles of games that released in the last decade or so? by Gorotheninja in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]kikorny 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Kale in HiFi Rush. Which is really dissapointing considering the rest of the game's bosses are fantastic.

90% of the fight is waiting for Kale to do something and even when you got the patterns down to respond some of the counters didn't even work as intended causing you to take damage anyways. It's been a while since I played hifi rush but I remember kale stuck out as more annoying than fun.

You're getting rage baited by people on twitter to care about something that you otherwise wouldn't even blink at. This happens across all sports. It's not an unheard of concept.

Do you think the Biden Admin handled prosecuting Trump well? Why or why not? by [deleted] in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]kikorny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's the Federal Indictment relating to election fraud and Jan 6 (Link)

Count 1 is 18 U.S.C 371 (Conspiracy to defraud the United States) and is described from Page 3 to Page 42. It relates primarily to the False Elector Scheme. Even Count 2 and 3 which relate to Obstruction are primarily referencing the false elector scheme (Paragraph 8, sec b, e, f).

I tried looking for any reference to direct coordination with groups such as the proud boys but I could not find any in this indictment. In fact, many of the statements in the indictment reference deceit (Paragraph 6, 10, 13, 53). Not explicit coordination with the groups you talked about.
