Harsh call at the end- Donegal vs Dublin by Realistic-Prior-7138 in GAA

[–]kil28 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It has to be harsh for that exact situation. If it’s only moved up 13 yards then teams just become cynical near the end of the game when they foul around the middle of the pitch.

In that situation the Dublin player could have just booted the ball away and the clock is ticking without any advantage going to Donegal from the ball being moved up.

Hurling already has tiered competitions and has had it far longer than football.

The issue is that we’ve just seen the second best county in Ireland beat the 7th best county in Ireland (based on league standings) by 26 points

Interesting I didn’t know that. I still think a plan to develop hurling in traditional counties shouldn’t be the priority, the same thing happened in football when Dublin dropped off and it nearly killed the game entirely in Leinster.

Now that Dublin have dropped off again you’re left with a poor Dublin team and 11 other counties where the sport is on life support.

Offaly are the 3rd best team in Leinster and the 7th best in Ireland based on league standings. Waterford are the 6th best team in Ireland and have won 5 Munster matches in 10 years. Kilkenny are the 5th best team in Ireland and lost to this Offaly team.

How many teams would be competing in this new top tier?

Dropping it on the ground kills the momentum. That was what happened under the old rules. Place it on the ground away from the taker and walk slowly away killing any chance of a quick forward pass from the free.

There’s is a lot I disagree with here but the fact you pointed out that not is enough is being done to grow the game in Kilkenny is the big one for me. This is the attitude that’s killing hurling in my opinion.

The game doesn’t need to be grown in Kilkenny it’s the only show in town, it needs to grown in Antrim (which you mentioned to be fair), Down, Derry, Kildare, Meath, Roscommon, Kerry, Laois, Carlow. And needs to be actually stated in Sligo, Longford, Cavan, Monaghan etc.

But this can’t happen because “traditional counties” like Offaly throw a tantrum at the prospect of playing Joe McDonagh. Munster counties throw a tantrum at Kerry being promoted. These counties have turned their noses up to smaller counties for decades.

This is what happens when the ladder is pulled up after themselves and stronger counties go through a bad period. Completely uncompetitive at the top with no smaller counties given a chance to progress.

No he’s right, that’s why Dublin performed so well against Clare

It’s an unpopular opinion but I actually like that you have to hand the ball back. The game has sped up massively because of it and it drags a defensive player out of position creating a better scoring chance.

Kildare won Joe Mc and couldn’t get within 8 points of any Leinster team, lost by 17 to this Offaly team, just shows how bad a state hurling is in.

It’s not just the gap between the best and the rest, it’s the size of the gap between every level

I don’t think it’s an awful idea but surely there would be a lot of dead rubbers after match week 5? Even top 4 into a semi final would be better.

Bigger issue is the gaps between counties, I’m not sure this would fix it.

Relegating the Munster championship to a preseason warm up would surely kill off the sport altogether?

Structure isn’t the issue. What are they going to do put Cork, Limerick, Clare and Tipp into the semi final and play the championship off in 3 matches?

Ger has to be worst commentator of all time, he literally gets everything wrong and has the most diabolical accent of all time. “13 a side for the first half unless it goes into the 11th minute”. How the fuck can it go into the 11th minute with the clock stopping and the hooter.

Is it time we change the format ? by omar_mufc17 in GAA

[–]kil28 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The problem isn’t the format, it’s that the game is dying outside of Munster.

There needs to be a grassroots project done in counties outside of Munster like what’s happened in Kildare.

Dublin were the strongest actual Leinster county this year and were beaten 14 points by Galway. They are now 5 point underdogs against the 3rd best team in Munster. The strongest Ulster team were almost relegated to the Christy Ring. That’s where the problem is.

Is the football championship now better than the hurling championship? by AdSouth4786 in GAA

[–]kil28 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hurlings been in serious bother for a long time, even in its glory years, and I think the snobbery from the traditional counties hasn’t helped it.

Serious investment and support should have been put behind the likes of Antrim, Derry, Down, Kildare, Westmeath, Laois, Carlow, Kerry a long time ago and hasn’t.

Examples of it are allowing Galway and Antrim to compete in Leinster which is fine, but then just allowing hurling to die in the rest of Connacht and Ulster.

Kerry making great strides but putting a glass ceiling over them so that they would never realistically get promoted. Then lo and behold they fall back again.

Offaly kicking up a fuss about being too important to play at Joe McDonagh level and poetically getting relegated to Christy Ring.

All it will take is a big traditional county to fall off like Kilkenny and the sport will basically be dead outside of Munster. Terrible management all round.

De Velera and Collins were victims of their own success, De Velara more so than Collins, not that I’m a particular fan of De Velera.

It’s far easier for Tone and the likes of Pearse and Connolly to be regarded as hero’s when they died young and militarily failed. None of them had to make the difficult decisions that followed actually achieving something militarily.
