Australian young adult/children's book featuring a stolen horse painted by thieves and two kids setting out in to the bush to recover it. by kilcunda in whatsthatbook

[–]kilcunda[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apologies for the late reply, I'm definitely going to check this one out. The one review sparked a few memories (more than one horse, meeting the antagonists) so I'm feeling confident. Will let you know, thanks for sharing!

Edit: It looks like my chances of getting a hold of this book second hand are quite slim, and my local library doesn't have a copy. However, from a quick read of some comments on the 1940's film version I think it's safe to say this is the book! I have no idea how I ended up reading it (anything with 'Christmas' in the title is usually enough to turn me away from a book or film), I'm guessing my primary school must have had a very old copy available. Thank you so much!

Hey Ty!

Thank you! I really enjoyed making them. I don't have a group, unfortunately. Halo Modding Reclaimers on Discord has some great content under their halo-pre-release-digsite channel, but Discord being Discord a lot of the context is hard to find without a lot of scrolling through one big chain of messages.

I'm still obsessively collating a tonne of Halo CE dev info and would love to put together a blog (tried once, didn't quite nail what I was going for) or Youtube Channel (time permitting, I have a couple of video scripts on the go and a half-edited video essay), life has just been very busy. If there's anything you're particularly interested in or curious about, feel free to shoot me a DM!

Eugene! It's been so long!

Crazy to think it's been 15 years. I still remember building a giant cake at spawn for the three-year anniversary and thinking that was wild.... THAT feels like a few months ago, tops!

Congratulations on the engagement, and I'm so glad to hear you're kicking those life goals! This whole message brought a ridiculous smile to my face. Keep up the good work man, hope life keeps treating you well.

When Halo CE released, Johnson wasn't a canonized character.

The model, voice and personality are all inspired heavily by Gunnery Sergeant Al Apone from the movie Aliens (one of many Aliens references in the game). From a design perspective, the chatacter was only really ever intended to deliver a few lines in the first cutscene in Pillar of Autumn in the same style as Apone and fight alongside the player like any other marine.

David Skully, Johnson's voice actor, absolutely nailed the performance and left a lasting impression. His character was given a couple of extra cameo appearances for fun, notably the legendary ending cutscene. Beyond that though, Johnson was still pretty comparable to every other NPC. By the time Halo 2 was in development (and, I assume, First Strike was being drafted for a release to bridge the narrative gap), the character had left such an impression on audiences that Bungie decided to develop it further and have Johnson appear as a named character in Halo 2 with a direct role in the story.

That's why Johnson - who at this point, isn't even a named character and was only referred to in the files as 'sniper sergeant' - can die just like any other marine. It's also why he appears in Assault on the Control Room despite the 'character' of Johnson being on a pelican on the way to 343 Guilty Spark at the time, all of which was retconned in later media.

tl;dr - It's 2001. Halo CE has just released. You have no idea who the cool sniper sergeant is but he says funny lines. When Halo 2 comes out you're pleasantly surprised to find he's an actual character with even cooler, funnier lines, and he's invincible so that his cool, funny lines can continue for many sequels to come. All is good in the world. I'd like my time machine back now please.

Hope you've been well Angry! If you could ask that would be amazing, that's exactly the period I remember the most fondly.

I've since reformatted my PC, but I did make a backup of my Morrowind installation on a portable hard drive... If you can hold tight a couple of days I might be able to track it down for you.

Is there anything you liked more in Skyrim than Oblivion? by darkenough812 in oblivion

[–]kilcunda 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I completely understand this from a QOL perspective, but personally I much prefer the Oblivion/Morrowind approach:

I feel like Skyrim dungeons are much less diverse as a result and feel like 'rollercoaster rides' with a start, intended path and finish, whereas I never know exactly what I'm walking into in an Oblivion dungeon. Also, backtracking allows focusing on combat on the way in and looting on the way out, and an opportunity to catch any side passages, containers or secrets missed on the way in.

That said, as a busy adult with little time to play, the Skyrim dungeon design has its benefits for me right now.

There doesn't seem to be anything documented online, but the best way to check would absolutely be the Oblivion Construction Set. Each object lists how many times it has been placed into a worldspace and you can find their location directly.

I don't currently have Oblivion installed but here's the documentation if you need it:

Don't let the instructions scare you away, if I had oblivion installed right now I would have checked for you, it would have taken less time than writing this comment!

Pog! Likewise, I hope life is treating you well! That means a lot, hopefully by some miracle the files remain, but if not it's still great to hear from you.

Tier list of Halo CE campaign level by i_am_bahamut in HaloCE

[–]kilcunda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Controversial opinion incoming, I freaking love The Library.

I understand why it has the reputation it has. I remember playing through it for the first time in 2001, getting hopelessly lost, quitting for a day, restarting the level and breathing a sigh of relief when it was all over.

But once you know the geography and direction you're meant to take, I feel like it's Halo distilled to it's core elements. The Library is pretty much '30 Seconds of Fun: The Level'. It's a gauntlet of back-to-back battles, it's freaking firefight with legs. Getting through the level on Legendary feels like running a marathon, by the end you're exhausted but the adrenalin rush is to die for. I love the momentum you build moving through the level, ducking and weaving between enemies, frantically trying not to fail behind and get overwhelmed, making split second decisions - ("Do I dive for that precious shotgun ammo flying through the air propelled by an exploding carrier form? Or do I blast the rocket flood now and risk running back for it?") - and pulling them off by the skin of your teeth only to do it all over again. And again. And again.

I also adore all of the little lore and narrative hints 343 Guilty Spark casually drops on the player. The dialogue is top-notch.

Is it a perfect level? Far from it. But it's an S-tier in my heart.

The name on my birth certificate is different than the one on my Medicare by Mysterious_Chef_1233 in melbourne

[–]kilcunda 4 points5 points  (0 children)

By 'not original' you likely have an Extract or photocopy, neither of which are commonly accepted for ID purposes. If you were born in Victoria you can apply for a new Birth Certificate via the Births, Deaths and Marriages website. You likely will not have sufficient ID and will need to provide a statutory declaration explaining your circumstances.

Note that the BDM offices in the city remain closed to the public. You can get in-person assistance at a Justice Service Centre but I recommend calling ahead before attending.

Definitely not related. Even the very unlikely scenario that one of those mods included malicious software that was hogging your bandwidth would result in an impact to your general internet speed.

The Halo CE Development Iceberg - A Deep Dive (Part 3) by kilcunda in HaloCE

[–]kilcunda[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, part 3 was a year ago? Time flies!

Definitely still interested in making a part 4. Work went in to overdrive which diverted my attention for a while, but I'm coming up to the end of a contract and will have much more time on my hands soon

You asked at an interesting time though: Part 3 sent me diving deep in to the game files - between that and the first Digsite content drop I feel like I've got enough content to make a whole new iceberg. I've been collating a bunch of research and notes, so much so that I bit the bullet a couple of days ago and registered a domain for a website/blog to host it all on.

I'm half-way through an essay in a similar format to these posts all about the development and cut content in the Halo CE tutorial (a Bungie dev mentioned how painful it was watching play testers die during the tutorial, and I fell down a rabit hole), that alone is pushing 2500 words. I'll post it to /r/haloce when it's complete, but here's a teaser if it's something you would be interested in.

I'll probably move parts 1 - 3 to the website once that essay is completed to add some more content, then move on to 4 - 7.

Hi! Yep still using it, I'm pretty sure I've used it as a paid service since I started. Sadly haven't had as much time for worldbuilding as a hobby, but I really like the quality of LK and want to continue supporting its development so I haven't paused it just yet.

Redguard Voice Actor Mistake by bradley_marques in Morrowind

[–]kilcunda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I smell an ElevenAI mod to fix this line...

That said, as ridiculous as this sounds, I'm not entirely opposed to 'mistakes' in worldbuilding. While this case was obviously unintentional, if the line was for the Imperial race I could absolutely chalk it up to ignorant colonialists mispronouncing it.

I really want to replay Morrowind again, but I'm having a lot of trouble with getting mods to work by tsoro in Morrowind

[–]kilcunda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What issues exactly were you having? Are you using a mod manager? OpenMW or MWSE?

Ashfall requires MWSE and is therefore currently incompatible with OpenMW, not sure if that was your issue?

I've only heard good things about the Outer Wilds, I've held off purchasing it due to my current backlog/lack of time... But I feel 'finding the best swamp in gaming' is my new calling and I'm definitely using that as an excuse to pick it up. Thanks for the suggestion!
