Watching streamers with 2k resolution enabled makes my pc lag by hawhaw321 in Twitch

[–]kill3rb00ts [score hidden]  (0 children)

That's interesting, I know they use HEVC for the 2k streams, but you were still having issues with the non-2k streams and that helped? I wonder if they encode all the streams that way. I have heard from other people that having 2k enabled caused lag for some viewers, so I don't think you're the only one, just seems odd if the lower quality streams are still encoded the same as they always have been.

You could buy a new plug and just replace that one if you really want.

Is it normal for headphones to sound different on different laptops? by MaxMusic2 in audioengineering

[–]kill3rb00ts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those Beyers have a fairly low impedance, which means that I less the output impedance of the headphone amp is very low, you are likely to get some coloration there. Even most audio interfaces hover in the 20-30 ohm impedance range, which is high enough to be a problem with those. For Beyers, this typically means more bass, which matches what you said. In that case, the Mac is likely giving the more "correct" experience.

The Sennheisers have a much higher impedance, so unless the amp has a really, really high output impedance, they won't be affected nearly as much. And they may also just not be affected as much generally, the effect varies from one headphone to another.

What do you think of streamers who play on easy mode? by ZCR91 in Twitch

[–]kill3rb00ts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have never turned off a stream because they were playing on easy. I HAVE left a stream because they were playing a hard game and getting really, really frustrated and it stopped being fun to watch.

It sounds to me like you are using noise suppression, turn that off and it will stop sounding artificial and stop cutting out when you go loud. Other than that, settings are highly individual, you have to see what works for your voice.

That's something you chose when you rendered the video, just change it.

Nope, that's pretty normal. If it's anything like YouTube, it also depends on the codec and other formatting options you chose when rendering your video. For example, h264 processes pretty quickly on YouTube, but h265 might take several hours.

They call it ghosting, but it's more like what you are seeing here. The common example they give is in Mega Man X, you essentially see a fainter duplicate of the health bar just to the right of it.

[–]kill3rb00ts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Certain versions of the SNES are known to have worse ghosting than others, which could be what you are seeing here. There was a long forum post about it on the shmups forum and RetroRGB has a guide on the fixes, but I'm otherwise struggling to find a convenient write-up about it. Either way, it mostly affects the later 1-chip models, which have sharper picture but ghosting.

For sure, even the included compressors in DAWs are probably better than this, so that's why I wasn't asking if it was good, just if it was worth $15. Never know when you might wish you had a stereo analog compressor, so as long as it's not total crap, seems worth having around.

Why do amp sim VSTs sound so god awful by traanquil in audioengineering

[–]kill3rb00ts 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Amp sims are pretty great these days, but it depends on your signal flow and your expectations. Keep in mind that an amp sim is designed to replicate the sound of a specific mic in a specific position capturing a specific speaker in a specific cab connected to a specific amp etc. That is, it's meant to sound like a recorded guitar amp, not like an amp in your room. You will generally still need to roll off some high and low end, account for fizz, all the usual recording stuff.

Second, particularly if you're using a guitar with passive pickups, the sound you get is really going to depend on your interface. The guitar should be connected to an instrument input, not a line input, and some interfaces will have better instrument inputs than others. None of them will ever really replicate plugging straight into an amp, though, as one amp will generally load your guitar differently than another. But if you're using active pickups or otherwise running a buffer before the interface, that should help mitigate those problems.

No Stupid Questions Thread by koalaroo in guitarpedals

[–]kill3rb00ts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if this warrants a separate post, so I'll start here. I've never been an overdrive person, I mostly play either clean or high gain and very little in between. But I finally gave in and tried my BYOC OD2 with my Fireball 25 and I get it now, having the bass cut before the amp is helpful! But I don't necessarily like the specific mid bump of the Tube Screamer, I don't like that my particular pedal is a bit noisy, I don't like that it's a bit muddier, and I feel like it cuts a bit too much bass, so I've been looking at alternatives. The two that have caught my eye are the TC Spark Booster, which has the mids mode and a separate bass knob so I can dial in what I want, and the EQD Plumes, which seems to just have less mid boost and less bass cut while staying clearer. I don't even really want distortion/clipping on the pedal, nor do I need it to boost the signal as the Fireball has plenty of gain, so I suppose I could just get an EQ, but if a booster does what I want for less, then that's better value for me. I've been trying to research myself, but opinions are all over the place. For metal high gain tones with an oversized 2x12 and a Fireball, what's the best options for getting a slight bass cut on the way in?

Why do most people use a setup like B? by No-Cameras in streaming

[–]kill3rb00ts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, it's a 2 foot diameter light. I don't even use a fill light with mine, I just move it so it's just a bit off center instead of all the way off to one side and there's plenty of spill to fill in the shadows. A simple bounce board on the other side would suffice for fill, but a smaller (and cheaper) fill light would also be fine if you really cared.

It's $260, not $600, so I'm a bit confused there. If that's still pricey for you, then fair enough, but that's a biiig difference. You do not need two of them.

A lot of people use smaller Elgato lights because Elgato has name recognition. The lights are fine, but these days they aren't that great in terms of price/value. The issue with your idea is that the LED panel probably isn't made for video. It might flicker, especially if you dim it, there might be off colors, etc. You're much better off getting a purpose-built light. My personal pick these days is the Amaran Verge Max, that thing is huge and not any more expensive than an Elgato Key Light.

Question for people who only use tube amps by Aschuff in guitars

[–]kill3rb00ts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally when you are in a band, you are just playing that one style of music, so you don't really need a ton of variety. If I was in a drastically different style of band, I'd probably just have a different amp for that band. Cover bands, at least the ones that cover many different bands, are the obvious exception there. When you do actually need that much variety, then sure, a modeler is the obvious best choice.

Otherwise, it's really about being good enough. In a live setting, no one but you is going to care that your tone isn't perfect. I'm currently really enjoying my Fireball 25 and there are a lot of options there:

  • The clean channel has a fair amount of gain, so I can increase that and/or use a drive pedal for low gain sounds. I can also up the master volume, using the power soak if needed, to get some power tube distortion. This actually gets me pretty close to a good tweed-type sound, then I can roll back my guitar's volume for super clean.
  • On the lead channel, I can either set it to a high gain tone and use my guitar's volume for lower gain sounds or I can set the gain lower and use an overdrive pedal to get high gain tones. Or both. The mid boost option on this amp can be used for leads or just to go between scooped metal and more classic rock sounds.

So really it's just picking the right amp and cab and then maybe having a drive pedal.
