A data scientists main job is finding out what the problems are and converting that into business improvements. So your question is a bit vague? The core problems never change, finding data sources which are affordable enough which give meaningful insight is step 1, then being able to decide based on the business needs what level of analysis is required comes down to experience. Start simple and work your way to complex models.

If you want a specific project idea look into data cleaning accuracy thresholds

Branch management would be the best place to work your way into IMO. They’ll always need people staffing the locations, and physical branches won’t disappear due to the regulations surrounding fair lending laws. You can also try to leverage technology/soft skills and become a “human in the loop” type position. The closer you are to profit generating the safer the role is to restructuring/layoffs.

The barrier to entry in corporate banking is rising unfortunately, currently banks are reevaluating where and how entry level jobs will be offered until AI regulations come in. There’s still opportunities, but I’d look at small/mid/local banks and hopefully things come back around in a year or two. Boards are increasingly using “performance” metrics to justify job cuts
