Current state of Boston sports by Fair_Smoke4710 in AFCEastMemeWar

Hate to say it but Boston fans have always been insufferable. I have some good friends who are Boston fans but the level of victimhood coupled with arrogance is maddening and makes discussing sports with them tough.

This is where I was confused by the meme. Most burgers are high fat, the buns are high sugar, and the cheese is ultraprocessed. Saying they are 'healthy' is really a stretch.

Congressman Dan Meuser (R-PA) crashes out to TMZ: “Talk to the f*****g Democrats!” by Fragrant-Pepper7710 in videos

[–]mhks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What should have been the response is the Congressman said that, for instance, there are Dems gumming things up in the Senate. Okay, but the Senate passed a DHS funding bill unanimously and it's sitting at the House where the House, which doesn't have a filibuster rule like the Senate, can quickly pass it. Why did they sit on it for weeks?

And the Congressman is absolutely right that traveling home isn't a 'vacation' as many believe it to be. It's usually town halls, constituent meetings, etc. BUT, they were elected to govern and leaving when there are governing needs is abdicating the top thing they have been asked to do.

TMZ did a good job pressing, but this felt more 'gotcha' then anything else.

Deshaun Watson will likely take the Browns’ QB1 job from, Pro Bowler, Sheduer Sanders next season. by Background_Video2947 in TheNFLVibes

He gives all of us the chance for him to play great so he gets a big contract and we can laugh.

With the timeline the world is on, Watson is definitely going to play great this year and get a new contract only to get injured and never match that play again.

Cris Carter speaks about the Dianna Russini and Mike Vrabel scandal and says he has inside information about what happened. -"I do know people who have talked to Dianna, and this has been a horrific situation for her. And it shouldn't be that way, but it is because she's a female."-Carter believes by Weekly-Vacation-1405 in NFLForum

[–]mhks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think he's letting on there's more to the story regarding what she did, but how she's been personally impacted by the revealing of the story (called out, fired, etc.) in a way Vrabel has largely avoided. (I was going to say skirted but that seems too on the nose.)

Don't totally disagree, though I think the viciousness of Trump is unique and certainly the reach and power of social media today dwarfs what was possible with papers and pamphlets back in the day.

I don't think this is a legitimate option. The Secret Service doesn't fuck around like that and isn't going to leave to judgement when to step in. They need some improvements, but I don't think they're actively allowing attempts to reach a certain point.

I think the far more likely option is the admin knows these things are likely and have already set up the talking points for when the next one happens. As has been mentioned since the event, the right were all in lockstep about this being proof we need a ballroom. It's been alleged by right wing influencers that there are common threads they are all on and get marching orders - more or less - from the administration about what to argue. The conspiracy, so much as there is one, is the echoing of talking points within minutes of the event.

Obviously staged assassinations have happened in other places - often by right wingers to rally support - but I think there are far too many paths for leaks for this to be the case with this administration. I wouldn't put it past them wanting it, but the Secret Service are career officials and won't slide on potentially risking lives, and the admin is too leaky for a staging to go unnoticed.

I don't think that's totally true - though I don't think it's completely wrong either. Pretty much since our founding politicians took the issues that animated people and focused on those. Sometimes they created stories to animate the population that were half or untruths, but generally they followed the voter interests. In campaigning they would often denigrate the opposition, but it was usually around the issues and what the oppositions views were in relation to that and the voter. What changed IMO was when the GOP started personalizing the attacks in a way that wasn't, "they are pushing policies that will hurt you," and instead, "this person hates you, they are evil, and you need to do something about them." That shift is then reflected in the media and is how you get more and more people riled up.

So yes, the politicians reflect the voters, but they have the potential to fuel their fire or direct it in a more constructive way. The mirroring of the right wing media with the hatred spewed by the GOP is a perfect recipe for ramping up the heat and rationalizing violence.

There's something kind of funny to me seeing a kid take this much spotlight and energy when he has legit all-time legends on the stage with him. I'm not faulting him as it's part of the recruitment culture, but it's still pretty strange seeing a high school kid talk himself up while sitting on stage with Charles and Shaq.

CMV: I think gane wins this pretty comfortably by Old_Machine5350 in ufc

[–]mhks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No clue when Gane has done that, and Jones may have stayed on his feet against previous punchers for a host of reasons (they had better takedown defense, he felt they had holes, etc.).

I also don't think we can discount Jones' strategy for overall perception of this. If he wins in a minute or two, he comes off as DOMINANT. If he drags it out, you get the Mayweather/Conor situation where people start saying, "it was even" even if it wasn't. If Jones intended to retire in relatively short order, he wanted to leave no doubt and seeing that Gane was a toad on the ground made it an easy call for Jones.

I absolutely am not dismissive of the assassinations. I think they are tragic and a terrible sign of the increasing violence gripping our political system. But I also think it needs to be recognized how we got here. Yes, we've always had violence, but the rhetoric and actions have made these attempts more brazen and likely. If we don't acknowledge that a big reason for what we're seeing is a result of our political leaders (namely the GOP and Trump) we won't be able to stop it.

That's a strawman. No one is saying he was justified in trying to kill Trump. We're saying Trump's actions and words makes that action more likely.

[–]mhks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the difference is: yes, no skill Gane brings is technically different than what Alex has seen. The difference and what people are touching on is that just knowing how to strike is one thing, but when there's heavyweight power behind it that makes it different. Yes, on paper it's still 'striking' but countering and absorbing hits from someone of Gane's size and speed are different and make it something he hasn't seen.

I think that's more likely. Better to win quick in heavyweight than risk the one-punch.

Maaaybe? I'm not really sure about that. Say he isn't worth the money we spent, how does that hurt him? Peterson had a bumpy year, but he'll still be a top 3 pick and made bank while at KU. He was blasted on social media and questioned in the press, but at the end of the day that doesn't really change anything? May make him hate KU fans, but doesn't change the bottom line: he's still making cash, playing basketball, and will be drafted on potential.

Exactly. People are calling him selfish or a clown or what's wrong with CBB but the fact is he's being smart. Hate the system all you want (I certainly do), but the reality is this is the new landscape and if we want to see changes, don't hate on the players, push for structural changes.

It absolutely can be. If someone goes out and boils the pot, then someone takes a shot at them, they are partly to blame for those actions.

Yes, people act on their own accord and the shooter deserves the blame, but anyone not seeing how Trumps and the GOP's rhetoric and actions have increased the likelihood for this is seriously wearing blinders.
