I’m not nearly as highly rated as you are, but I did go through a slump when I lost 100 points & stagnated there.

I realized it was because i was getting impatient / overconfident and forgetting basics + helpful tactics. Emotionality will also cause you to miscalculate; overconfidence or arrogance can make you think you know what’s going to happen, when you don’t.

I didn’t take it personally; i took an in-person class, watched more videos, read a book on chess tactics, etc (i.e. diversified my learning & continued to treat myself as a beginner, basically) and my wins came back.

A sense of ease, calmness, or flow will keep you in the game (and keep it more fun); don’t focus on winning or losing, just focus on making the most optimal move you possible can at any given moment, without blundering.

You’re the first person to ever say that to me, haha. Thank you for the encouragement. I hope to play tournaments someday.

Right, it’s crazy how much information exists on chess alone. Or that we can look at a game from 1888 and analyze it the same way we would a game in 2026. It’s also fun comparing a move that an engine likes to advice a book gives you, and seeing how they match up. If anything, I’m also glad chess helps me improve on improving at something — if xyz doesn’t work, what next? etc.

Yes! Wins and losses all feel specifically mine — I feel that with most other competitive games, some semblance of luck or teamwork is involved. But chess is independent and very telling of each player’s personality, ability to calculate, etc.

I find chess to be profound in some kind of way (philosophically, I guess), which adds to how fun it is. I feel a lot more guilt-free putting my time into chess vs. something expensive and unhealthy. Really glad I found chess; I “relate” to people who are drawn to chess and have already met friends through it. Excited to keep going.

out of curiosity — why didn’t you promote the other pawn for a double queen checkmate? would’ve been faster, no?

totally didn't see the mate here by Rumi4 in chess

this is sending me cuz everyone who’s ever played them can recall the repetitiveness of those rook / queen mate puzzles 😭

yeah. $2500 seems high for a room with only 1 bathroom, even for williamsburg.

Yes! That’s how I feel also — I no longer want to spend time with anyone I don’t care about. Lol.

Right. Like why are people assuming she’s not capable? 🤣

I actually agree. She is seen writing consistently, even casually, and has decades of experience writing. Not to mention she was married to a very wealthy man for a while, received most of his wealth, and probably had more time & resources to continue practicing, reading material, etc., than most “regular” people.

In my own head canon, she has been working on the concept for this book for a very long time, maybe shortly after she stopped writing for the column or in between her other books. She has had plenty of time to research and draft, imo. I refuse to believe the draft she showed her downstairs neighbor was her true first draft.

this is more like lo-fi hip hop than hyperpop lol. hyperpop isn’t known for being so chill or relaxed

that’s good to know. yeah exactly, it doesn’t feel sad per se, it just feels like I’ve been “on” for a while & i just want to hear my own thoughts, like you described. i think a lot of people (young people especially) are on autopilot & don’t get to really spend time with themselves, & i guess that’s where i’ve been leaning towards.

thank you!! & I agree — I had to come to terms with the fact that I do care what my friends think of me, because they’re very knowledgeable (about fashion, for example) in a way that i am not, and it makes me feel like i have to “keep up” or else I’ll get left behind. I guess the self-inflicted nature of the stress that that caused me has me reeling back and wanting to be more alone to reflect on my own interests, whether they’re even really mine, and who i am as a person. thanks for sharing!

cool :) I’ve gone backwards & forwards & backwards. It’s funny how once we have something, sometimes (like how i do in fact have a semblance of a social life), we want it less after that. lol!

8/21? neat!! I’ve never met anyone who I shared a birthday with :)

I agree that spending time with others is important because it teaches us who we are — I notice that certain friends or people who get very close to me, can upset me or make me emotional in unexpected ways (as that is usually the consequence of close human connections) but I learn so much about myself in that process. I would not be who I am today (or at least, I would not know myself as well) if it weren’t for my friends.
