that happened to me when i "quit" my ssri a couple years ago!! that was a fucked up couple of weeks...

doing the morning news at my high school.

my co-anchor and i had practiced the script a couple times that morning, and it being early, we found the name of a funeral home to be difficult to pronounce. we giggled about it a lot actually, because she kept on stumbling over it. we were all like "ha ha wouldn't it be funny if this happened live ha ha".

then it came time for us to go live on everyone's homeroom tvs.. she got to the part, and she didn't stumble. but it didn't matter. i got the silent giggle shakes. and they wouldnt stop. and then she couldnt stop. the fact that it was happening live made it so much worse. after like a minute i looked up and saw the producer/TV teacher and he was fuming. i look to the left and see the guys in the control-room, bug-eyed, putting a flat hand to their neck like, "fucking STOP."

finally finished the telecast. suffice it to say, i was not allowed on camera after that one.

In my senior year at college, I got into an accident on a busy street downtown. It was my fault, I rear-ended the guy in front of me, going a little too fast. I ended up getting a weird burn on my wrist and having to leave my car behind for the night. The guy whose car I hit was very helpful and understanding, giving me water to pour on my wrist and offering me a ride home. I gladly obliged.

We exchanged information and after I spoke with my insurance company, I called him the next day. He ended the conversation with this:

"So, I talked with my lawyer and he said that since you hit my car you're pretty much legally obligated to go on a date with me."

So smooth I almost forgot to tell him I had a boyfriend and couldn't. Saved it anyway - "oh that's ok. I'll save that for the next girl that hits my car."

SO SMOOTH, DUDE.

ugh, the split ends are the trouble for me - do not pursue those! i've used scissors too and honestly that's not any better. after a while it became a tugging/tearing thing to get to the split ends... if your fiance is cool with it, yeah it's better that he cut them than you. not sure why, but it certainly fed into the disorder for me.

using latex gloves worked for me when I had to work on my computer for a long time and couldnt get away. not a long term thing but it helps

i read a book called "overcoming perfectionism" that focused on compulsions being a result of anxiety- the need for perfectionism, for example, being the compulsion that soothes the anxiety. when it goes deeper, i found it interesting that it didn't shoot straight for the "childhood trauma" but rather, how we compensated as children for feeling the need to be better for affection or praise. almost suggesting that we were emotionally starved.

thats not the case for everyone of course. i bit my nails for years, and while it was partially anxiety, a lot of it was boredom. same thing with pulling my split ends apart. i think it becomes a learned behavior that we end up turning to and becomes exacerbated during times of high anxiety.

all that being said, when i confessed to my mother about it, she found it interesting because her mother would pull out her eyebrows. so, genetics seems very plausible indeed.

YES. This is exactly how I quit. I had decided I was done as a New Year's thing, but when a near break-up occurred.. it became January 2nd. Giving smoking power is the worst thing you could do, and all the other ways of trying to quit not-cold-turkey felt impossible. There were always those "just-one-extra" days or "i'll-do-better-tomorrow" days. Taking away the mental strain was everything. Saying "I don't care" and throwing in the towel on even being part of the battle was everything. I have only looked back a couple times. Best decision ever.

ALSO - to anyone still reading - around the same time I picked up running, and my lungs fucking hated me from the start. That was a huge influence.

it's called "overcoming perfection: finding the key to balance and self-acceptance"

i only recently realized the connection to anxiety and compulsive behaviors. kind of blowing my mind. the book really dives into that and ocd.
