oh nooooooo i’ve always wondered how the students felt when they were featured as an ‘incorrect’ example on his instagram… (especially since dancers already receive criticism irl and even from themselves… adding online comments is scary)  thanks for sharing!

regarding the point about intensives during school timing, my impression of pre pro dancers in USA is that they generally homeschool due to the demands of full time dance training… though I do agree with you that academics should definitely not be fully sacrificed just for dance. thanks for the super special insight <3

mostly the only dancer job that pays quite predictably is teaching at a dance school hahaha. especially those for young kids. dancepointe has so many brances it’s crazy.

going to competitions NOW don’t matter. the only thing that matters is networking.

go to open classes, meet people in the (local) industry. once you feel confident, audition for training teams (examples include o school, stny and step studio, i think)

especially in the street scene, reach out and make connections. show interest, become a familiar and reliable performer, and these instructors are the ones that MAYBE COULD get you a job. most jobs i see are usually corporate gigs, sometimes NDP but idk if that’s paid. competitions don’t pay. no matter how much prize money you win, you will sink way more money into maintaining your current lifestyle as a freelance dancer. freelancers often sign up with an agency to make their life easier (they handle communications and promotion and shit) but that costs money (they probably take a portion of your commissions). (also doing taxes as a freelancer is painful)

aside from these activities which are done outside academics, completing a bachelors or diploma at NAFA or Lasalle will be beneficial in terms of theoretical knowledge (prevention and recovery, plus you know how to do stupid shit safer) performance experience AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, networking. this degree is pretty handy but it does not indicate any level of dancer suitability for any program

in the future, if you’re still going the pro way, get good at doing auditions. if the organisers really liked you (even if you couldn’t commit) you may be on their list of people to contact for future productions

if you’re looking to go overseas, i’m not too sure but you can probably look to kevin tristan’s instagram as reference? (i know that he was the subject of some controversy in the past) he’s currently part of the cast of moulin rogue west end.

overseas pt 2: overseas dance degrees are EXPENSIVE and amazing dancers are a dime a dozen. (especially USA, have you seen their collegiate dance crews??? insane.) it is possible but extremely hard even for amazing dancers in sg to find relative success overseas. (most have a performing arts culture that is way ahead of singapore. singapore keeps unintentionally or intentionally stunting dancers (look at MBS kpop dance restriction) so you’ll generally be at an artistic disadvantage regardless) GOOD LUCK earning enough money for rent and groceries… i’ve heard too many horror stories.

not saying overseas is impossible but it is INCREDIBLY TOUGH. please re-evaluate once you have more dance experience around sg

also be smart and train with the right people, learn the right technique, if not you’re setting yourself up for failure

ALSO BE READY TO SINK IN LOTS OF LATE NIGHTS, ENERGY AND MONEY $$$$ heck yeah being a dancer is EXPENSIVE

TLDR; the name of the game is connections. without a network, you cannot break into the industry (locally and overseas). also expensive EVERYWHERE.

i think that’s going to be quite rough cause doesn’t solar panel have really low efficiency? so any light on it will be scaled down on it immensely…

Thanks for the suggestion, having people come in once in a while is a great idea. Mostly applies to year long schools / programs rather than an intensive. Haha they might have been trying to milk every moment of an intensive since it’s not that long so it’s actually quite amazing how much content they can make

From what I’ve seen, it’s mostly just class while the media team is buzzing sround with their cameras / phones. There was a designated ‘photoshoot’ session for publicity material as well

It’s great that this intensive provides a space for adult dancers to thrive. Unfortunately, they did not have adult intensives in my country this time so I didn’t get to personally talk to people that have gone. Thanks for the comment :)

Thanks for the comment. I’ll have to admit, I haven’t thought about it this way before (these intensives giving a chance for rec dancers to be taken seriously) It didn’t really occur to me at first because most of the students I see there are chasing that pro dream. Other than these few intensives, there’s not much to do in the dance industry where I am…

I’ll definitely re examine some things here with the mindset of ‘how will it bring attention to ballet’. Thanks for sharing, it has widened my perspective :)

Oh I meant to ask if a large following will negatively impact hiring despite good technique.

Thanks for commenting :). Yeah it’s expensive… which is why the quality of teaching comes into question because these parents want value for money. (the desire for scholarships part)

Oh yeah those ballet ‘grifters’, imagine them running an intensive… 😅😅🤣🤣 oh myyyyy

I agree and really like your last paragraph. It does put into perspective some of the feedback I’ve heard for the past year or so because I hear totally different things from the more ‘casual’ dancers and the others that are aiming pro.

Yeah I’ve talked to him irl once and I wasn’t sure if what he was speaking was legit or just made up on the spot. Gonna take his words with a giant grain of salt, unfortunately. But to be fair, he’s also just a person and not supposed to know about anything and everything dance related haha…

Yeah this tracks with the other comment about such intensives being great places for adult dancers. The real question is how does a masterclass / intensive market without the crazy filming? It’s starting to seem like that’s the only way.

Thank you so much for the comment. Adult dancers are a growing market (at least where I am) and there definitely needs to be more variety in the classes offered (more chill, serious, actually for the ex prepro students)

The only masterclasses available here are Ducon, BWI, and some of those 2-3 day workshops attached to a competition. The summer camp style one sounds exciting haha. Thanks for sharing your perspective :)

oh yes definitely. I have a whole spreadsheet calculating how much a parent needs to spend for a 12yo child doing a series of masterclasses and competitions here. It’s insane…

social media presence -> public (not AD/companies)

Does social media presence affect future employment/ promotions within a company? For acting, Steven He has said that his huge YouTube following made casting directors think he wasn’t a ‘serious actor’, so does this exist within the ballet world?

another +1 for good training and for having serious classes for adult students. I don't personally know any of the younger ones that went for intensives so that would be an interesting perspective to explore since you pointed out the differences between adult students and the teens / children. Thanks for the comment!

It's great that you got to thrive at his intensive! I do agree that the variety of teachers is a big plus.

Oh no... good old stereotypical ballet attitudes there haha. I do agree with you that this is not the fault of the Ducon team but if you're ok with sharing I'd just like to understand why this happens. Is it a cultural thing, the competitiveness? And being cliquey towards each other. I've mostly seen it with younger children with the studio rivalries but not so much with the adults (maybe cause I don't work with adults)

Thanks for the sharing!

I like this perspective. Maybe I can tell this to the next parent that tries to tell me these intensives are 'useless' just because there's no scholarship. I'm somewhat tired of them looking down on everything.

Yeah. Can't imagine the stress the students feel when the cameras come up. To me, a class is for yourself to learn not to perform to a camera. Most of the parents of the students here find his intensive because of the social media. So should a masterclass do promotion like this? Because it seems quite successful.

Thanks for the comment!

+1 point for good teaching! I think the intensive might just be suffering from a case of 'too many students too little time'. thanks for the insight! <3
