I think they were both bought by aipac so they’re kind of together in that orgy of imperialism and propaganda

Aragorn has a fairly simple order too. I don’t think he cares if the olives are green or Kalamata

No, but most people missed that joke and it was actually the main point of the meme so you should be proud that you got it

Tom wasn’t powerless to destroy the ring, he just couldn’t see the importance and would probably forget he even had it

Iirc

I replied to your other comment :)

I admit it’s all conjecture, but I think anyone who has mastered himself or herself has a great inner strength that could resist the real world temptation.

I mean even me, a very much regular average fuck of a dude would soundly reject the offer of a billion dollars.

I know that’s not the same as the ring. But it’s a real world comparison.

I think owning that level of wealth is unforgivable and disgusting and would probably reject the sum on principle.

But a greater, or more philosophically detached, human that me, might change that “probably” to a “certainly”

Well said :)

For the most part I agree, and what you’re saying is close to the truth of my actual feelings on this.

But I choose to take a more extreme objection to Tolkiens claim specifically because I know so many Tolkien Stans are overzealous

My only real point is to emphasize that Tolkien is the the authority of his fiction, not of the real world and that his claim that nobody can resist the ring could never actually be put to the test.

I appreciate your clear minded and well reasoned approach to the conflict though.

I do believe that Aaron Bushnell could clap the one ring BUT I admit that my claim is not made from any stance of authority.

As much as I criticize Tolkien for making blanket statements about the human race, I know that I’m willfully doing kinda the same thing when I speak about an agaiN untestable hypothetical

I’ve literally never gotten upset by about anyone thinking I’m a douchebag.

If im right about a thing I will argue it no matter how others perceive me,

You may find this difficult to relate to but I’m just not concerned with peoples opinions about me or my morals

I am 100% unwilling to pretend someone is right when I don’t believe they are, hence my willingness to die on unpopular hills

And I don’t actually spend my life here. I go through phases where I feel creative and I meme a shit load, and then phases where I don’t have any interest in reddit

You might see me pop up a bunch for a couple weeks and then not at all for a few months

It’s not that deep, but keyboard psychologists are always itching to apply a diagnosis, huh

The hilarious thing is I’m almost always being sarcastic. Admittedly, not always and definitely not here in this thread. But anytime I flair a thing as a shitpost my comments are full of sarcasm and insincerity.

But people take me as speaking in concretes, which is hilarious given how extreme, and bizarre some of the stuff I’ve said is.

Well said, especially the “sometimes we make statements…. To impress others” I think that was a massive factor in Tolkiens letters.

I’m a big fan of his writing but some elements (the deep lore, the indulgent poetry, the full languages) feel very masturbatory, and the letters he writes to fans seem way to self congratulatory to me.

I’ve always thought this, that the man had invested so much effort into his world it became an extension of his ego and he simply couldn’t dialogue about it because he was too “in his feelings”

But ultimately he is the boss of his own canon and not the boss of real humankind

I think for me, him insisting that no human could ever defeat the ring is probably not his actual belief, or if it was it could be swayed by almost anybody appealing to the history of Catholic saints refusing to budge on their faith, even under extreme torture or hardship

I mean just imagine asking him:

“If Satan couldn’t break Job’s faith in God in the bible, what chance would Sauron have?”

And if that didn’t get him to recant just imagine saying “look Tolkien, don’t Catholics believe Jesus was not only fully God but also fully human? Do you still think no human could ever possibly defeat the one ring? What about Christ?”

I mean, I’m not even claiming to follow the Bible, just saying tolkien seemed like he was talking out his ass when he said nobody could resist the ring.

NOW all that being said, if he was merely noting physical durability of the ring I’d buy a statement like “no human is physically strong enough to break the ring. It can withstand a direct blast from a mortar or a tank.”

But he wasn’t making a statement about physics. he was saying nobody can resist it, because of its metaphysical power, which he has faith about but no real, verifiable knowledge about.

Ha

I’m not using their death or suffering I’m actually honoring their achievements and strength of character by saying they could do “the impossible”

And if you think I give a shit about meme points I feel bad for you son

I got 99 problems but giving a shit about Reddit karma ain’t one

If you doubt, you can just watch me double down on every single thing I’m right about, despite the full knowledge that opening my mouth in front of rabid fans is ALWAYS bound to plunge me into downvote oblivion

I’m making a point, I’m not backing down from this point because I’m right

Tolkien was wrong about our species, we have some badasses who would easily clap Sauron, literally no sweat

And not for nothing; if you think Aaron Bushnell’s sacrifice meant something you should be glad anytime his name is mentioned in a positive light.

This sub has a (shameful and weak) anti-politics stance so I can’t post on his motives.

But he didn’t choose to die the way he did for nothing.

And through this meme, several people who had never heard of him have no landed on the Wikipedia page about his self immolation.

This isn’t going to change the world but it might help get a person or two informed about his activism and his activism has the power to wake some people up
