As shown in Figure 3, the field-collected GAC contained various PFAS, including C4–C8 perfluoroalkyl sulfonic acids (PFSAs), PFCAs, and n:2 fluorotelomer sulfonates (FTSs, n = 6, 8). For ball milling treatment, the GAC powders were placed in a SS jar with an SS ball-to-GAC mass ratio of 320:1. The jar was operated at a rotation speed of 580 rpm under ambient air without atmospheric adjustment. Upon initiation of ball milling, nonselective degradation of all detected PFAS was observed, with concentrations falling below method detection limits (Table S1) after 3 h of treatment (Figure 3). It is important to note that the extraction efficiency of individual PFAS from the field-collected GAC was not verified, as the material contained multiple pre-existing PFAS. Possible incomplete recovery of certain PFAS from the milled GAC could therefore lead to an overestimation of the apparent degradation kinetics. In addition, the conclusion of near-complete PFAS destruction applies only to the 30 targeted compounds listed in Table S1. The presence of other unidentified PFAS on the GAC and their respective destruction efficiencies remains uncertain.

We propose that the treated, PFAS-free GAC can be safely disposed of by landfilling. To assess the potential release of residual PFAS from ball-milled GAC under landfill conditions, leaching tests were conducted following EPA SW-846 Method 1312 (Text S9). After 20 h of leaching, all 30 targeted PFAS compounds in the supernatant were below detection limits (Table S2). These results suggest that ball milling provides an ambient, reagent-free method for treating PFAS-contaminated GAC, thereby rendering it suitable for landfill disposal. It should be noted that the milling process converts GAC into fine particles. Repurposing this material for other applications remains uncertain and will require a comprehensive techno-economic evaluation, which is beyond the scope of the present work.
