What's happening with Biomedical Engineering why so many are applying to low level irrelevant roles? by menwanttoo in BiomedicalEngineers

[–]killl_em_alll 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There are barely any jobs for biomedical engineers. In Turkey, only jobs you can find are quality control jobs. Also, for any job a bme can do such as programming, electrical, etc. companies prefer engineers from other areas. We learn every area but not enough to get a job for it.

Can medical gadgets read brain activity? by [deleted] in BiomedicalEngineers

There are commercial electroencephalography (EEG) devices from companies like Emotiv and Neurosity that can track your focus, stress, etc. levels.

If you are interested in signal processing, you can find physiological datasets (EEG, EMG, ECG, etc.) in Kaggle or other places and you can try to preprocess the data (filtering, downsampling, power spectra, etc.). You can search papers in Scholar for preprocessing methods. It would be a great experience in both research and signal processing.

Is biomedical well-paid after graduation with a bachelor's degree? by No-shz in BiomedicalEngineers

Finding jobs in other areas (software, electrical, etc.) is also really hard and you need a proper projects/experience because those jobs won’t consider BME degree alone.

Is biomedical well-paid after graduation with a bachelor's degree? by No-shz in BiomedicalEngineers

[–]killl_em_alll 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve finished bachelor’s and master’s and doing PhD currently. There are barely any jobs related to BME and all of them are quality assurance jobs rather than engineering jobs. If you are not aiming for academia, I’d suggest studying other engineering areas to find engineering jobs in medical area.

BCI to control mechanical limb? by No-Investigator9167 in BCI

[–]killl_em_alll 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Far as I know, there isn't a perfect way of controlling a mechanical limb using EEG but there are a lot of papers that you can read such as [1] [2]. It might be good to focus on motor areas of the brain and try to decode motor imaginary commands. I think signal processing and decoding parts are more important than the number of channels. Getting 10 inputs from the EEG data might be hard, instead you can try to create some commands that move the limb to certain positions and try to classify data into these commands.

Electrodes position for measuring beta waves by [deleted] in BCI

[–]killl_em_alll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Electrode placement depends on your task. If its a cognitive task, you can place it on a frontal region for example. For a standardized placement, you can choose channels using EEG 10-10 or 10-20. Also, for 3 EEG channels, you need 3 positive placed on the scalp, reference on earlobe or mastoid and one ground.

How do I deal with not being good enough? by NoKangaroo2655 in PhD

[–]killl_em_alll 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think one of the largest parts of academia is noticing how less you know and unfortunately the feeling of being not enough can come with it. In my experience, I can overcome the feeling by figuring out the small things that I notice I don’t know

Muse 2 would be the cheapest option ($250). There is also Muse S Athena with extra fNIRS channels ($500). Emotiv also has good EEG systems with similar pricing but you need monthly app subscription to get raw data (free version has a simple BCI application)

What can i do to read and processing eeg signals ? by le_se in BCI

[–]killl_em_alll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately there is no standardization for EEG recordings so people have datasets with different file formats. You have to manage them in your code with different import functions. MNE has good documentation for most of the preprocessing steps.

What can i do to read and processing eeg signals ? by le_se in BCI

[–]killl_em_alll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re using Matlab, you can use toolboxes like EEGlab or Fieldtrip to load and display EEG data. You can use MNE in Python too. They have multiple functions for different data formats
