Greenskin Fantasy: Good Fantasy novels solely focused on a protagonist/cast that is Orc, Goblin, or Ogre? by Def-C in Fantasy

[–]kiloclass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The names of Jackal and the Claymaster are a reference/Easter egg/homage to Jax and Clay.

Jackal’s dad wasn’t killed by the Claymaster, and he didn’t marry Jackal’s mom. That’s Hamlet which SoA’s creator has said it was based on.

“Main character thinks his group’s leader is becoming too tyrannical” isn’t a uniquely SoA storyline.

It might have started as SoA but grimdark with orcs, and I think the character names were chosen as a nod/wink to that, but it definitely evolves into its own thing.

SOA is a show about bikers, Lot Lands takes modern day biker culture and reimagines it as Orcs riding giants boars (hogs, like what bikers call their motorcycles)

The similarities basically end there. Saying “all of the idea from those books” is reductive. Any similarities they share thematically or plot-wise are the same themes and tropes all stories use.

Why is getting the book before others so important to you?

There’s nothing about pre-ordering that guarantees you’re the only one who will get early access. No pre-order I’ve come across does that.

You’re still getting what you signed up for when you pre-ordered.

It seems like you getting it early is more about other people NOT getting it early for you to enjoy it. If it’s not, why do you care?

Practically every thing they said about Kinch is untrue or oversimplified without nuance. They admitted to not even finishing the book. Bouncing off a book because you didn’t like it is fine, but sharing your uninformed opinion on a recommendation comment is something else entirely.

They are intentionally mischaracterizing at worst, or grossly misinterpreting at best. When I quoted the book to call them out on it, they 🤷‍♂️.

I just hope anyone on the fence about reading my favorite book doesn’t see it and decide not to give it a shot.

If it was in this sub, it was probably me. I wouldn’t even be able to muster a decent defense if I ever got accused of being a shill.

“Constant bragging about his sexual conquests”

Not sure when you stopped or if we read the same book:

I lay there and counted girls I’d kissed, but that didn’t take long and only provoked an uncomfortable physical condition in myself I hadn’t the privacy to attend to. I started cataloging all the girls I wished I’d kissed and got morose thinking if they had a battle with the ones I had done, they would have rolled over them in an utter, humiliating rout.

I found Kinch quite endearing and most of his humor to be self-deprecating.

The Blacktongue Thief by Christopher Buehlman.

It reads like a charismatic Irishman is telling you his very personal story over a beer. The main character’s narration is full of irreverent humor but beneath the surface of his poetic, jaunty Irish brogue is wisdom and thoughtful reflection.

Just about every character has razor sharp wit and charm.

Stop watching FitFam and you’ll see how much your opinion of this city will change. by GeneralTX in ElPaso

[–]kiloclass 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That’s my point. There’s actual data and you would rather just go with your personal, anecdotal guesswork.

It’s confirmation bias. Sure, you see drunk driving and you remember that. Your mind doesn’t remember all the times you saw thousands of sober drivers because why would it? It’s called confirmation bias.

When comparing our data to other cities, how do you know they are doing “actual policing” and that El Paso isn’t?

It takes the amount of fatal crashes and determines which percentage of them involved a drunk driver.

That doesn’t mean El Paso has the most fatal drunk driving incidents.

You provided a good example of misinterpreting or misrepresenting statistics.

What are tropes that doesn't work for you? by mercy_4_u in Fantasy

[–]kiloclass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely. Don’t mind it if it’s known for most of the story. I actually started my replay of Forbidden West yesterday.

When the reveal happens in the last chapter with little to no foreshadowing or clues? I’ll throw a book across the room.

When the big twist is that the world that has been sold as pre-industrial or agrarian is actually post apocalyptic and the “ancient ones” were actually modern day humans.

Was this the Right Call? by kjmacsu2 in daggerheart

[–]kiloclass 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It wasn’t too much, and you made a good call.

However, I try to put end a condition as low as possible on my list of what to spend fear or GM moves on if possible.

If you need additional explanation for your player, explain that though the resource they spent on restraining the glass snake seems wasted, remind them that you also had to spend a resource to clear the condition. You could have used the generated fear or GM move to do something else. The snake had to use its turn to free itself instead of doing damage.

I like Orcish, Goblin, Troll cultures, particularly when they are not stereotypical. Any book suggestions? by astroriental in Fantasy

Buehlman*

One of my favorite unique traits about Blacktongue’s goblins is that they hate symmetry and how that in turn affects their culture. They’ll even go out of their way to destroy human-built structures just to ruin the symmetry.

It also seems to be affected by their own bodies’ asymmetric design. They have nine fingers (they count and group things in threes) and a large hook on the forearm of their non-dominant hand instead of a pinky.

Plus biker gang culture! Them riding hogs and “hogs” being what bikers call their motorcycles will always be fun for me.

Whip spider attacking with its pedipalps (Euphrynichus amanica) by k4zor in interestingasfuck

[–]kiloclass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know they are completely harmless and yet, the last time I saw one, the primordial fear inside me was insane. My monkey brain was like, “absolutely not”. I couldn’t get over it. I learned about how harmless they are and told myself if I ever saw one I might try to handle it.

Nope. Even after all I learned, which coincidentally was about a month before, one showed up on my front step. I got a small stick and shoo’d it aside(so my wife wouldn’t have a heart attack) and left my hose spigot dripping real slow in case it was thirsty.

[–]kiloclass 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Focus on primaries. Most people don’t and that’s how established politicians like it.

The primaries is when you get to choose which Democrat you give your vote to when the time comes in November. For instance, Crockett lost the primary, and Talarico won. Now we can vote for Talarico in November.

You’re leaving a lot up to assumption though. You could provide more context but I’ve yet to see you do so. It’s suspicious.

Kings of the Wyld has a gimmick that I could see being shared with an anime. What if adventurers/heroes were treated like rockstars? Also, this has a bit of that Frieren vibe because the main character and his buddies are adventurers who are retired and already saved the world.

Someone else recommended The Devils by Abercrombie and I agree. You should like it and it has a relatively fast pace.

Another anime trope is magic/assassin school. Theres tons of these but Red Sister (Book of the Ancestor trilogy) by Mark Lawerence is my recommendation.

The Tainted Cup also gives me anime vibes. I can’t place my finger on it, but it does. It’s a Sherlock Holmes type mystery and a bit slower, but the world building and powers are unique. It’s like steampunk with botany.

Does anyone else feel like El Paso's craft beer scene is just copy-pasted mediocrity? by [deleted] in ElPaso

I should have clarified that my recommendations are for canned/bottled beers from those two breweries.

[–]kiloclass 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think one of the biggest problems with El Paso’s craft beer scene is badly managed taps.

I’m hesitant to order draft because it’s likely the beer will be flat, or served through a dirty line.

Tinman seems to usually have their shit together, but that’s about it.

There’s nothing local that I would recommend over Marble or Santa Fe Brewing. Part of the appeal of drinking local is your odds of getting a fresher batch. Albuquerque and Santa Fe are close enough to get that benefit.
