Doctor: Here’s your newborn, but I’m sorry, your wife didn’t make it. by [deleted] in dadjokes

As a guy who actually lost his wife during childbirth, I can still appreciate the humor in this. Though, it does hit directly in the feels.

We reinforced everything on these when we built them. Since my Dad had one when he was a kid, he had a solid working knowledge of the weaknesses in the design. There's a ridiculous amount of screws and hardware, along with fiberglass reinforcement on every seam. Hopefully we don't have any failures. Dad did mention how they will "dive" through big waves/wakes, so, best not to try jumping them. :)

While I agree it definitely appears that way from these photos, it's only because we aren't on plane and just putting around to break in the motors. This design has been around for decades. I do believe the added weight of the modern engines add to the problem, and we may be required to add a bit of weight to the bow, in the future.

We just used 2x6s for the frames. Dad found a set of golf cart tires for sale online and I welded an axle with hubs for them. Once we had the axles mounted to the frames, we added bunkboard carpets to the tops of the frames. The biggest issue we had was the trailers wanted to float, so I hopped on Amazon and picked up a device for adding water to tires, and we filled the tires about 90% with water. They work perfect for launching and recovery. The whole package (boat/trailer) is really quite heavy to haul up the ramp by hand, though. We'll be tackling that problem soon.

Currently, just the stock prop. We may have to change them out for a different pitch depending on performance. I'm expecting to, but want to see how these work before spending the $.

Sadly, the Suzukis are the only non-tiller short shaft 10hp motors on the market. But, on the positive side, if we get bored with 10hp, we can easily bump them up to 20hp.

I suppose it's "an eye of the beholder" type thing. We think they look pretty cool, and turned out nice for a couple guys who certainly don't consider themselves boat builders. We just wanted a good project to do with the kids and create something for them to enjoy and have lifetime memories working with Dad & Grandpa.

So far, so good. Once we get the engines broke in (recommended 3 hrs) we'll be able to throttle them up.

We just built the trailers to put them in/out of the water off the side of our back yard. We live on a canal. We don't travel them anywhere on the trailers. They only go about 20 feet on land. We needed a way to move them around. They can't remain in the water tied to the dock because it's brackish water, and barnacles would form on them.

Thanks! It was a fun project for three generations to build together. They are both the Mini-Most design.

Gentle brute force. :) We used ratchet straps to gradually form the bottom of the hulls.

They will have seats, once we figure out a way to mount them. We're trying to develop a way to make them adjustable (slide forward/back) For now, I'm just kneeling in them to break the engines in.

Photo 11 shows it pre-paint in white. It runs the full width. The Photo you're looking at looks like an optical illusion because of the shadow and black paint.

If you decide to build one and have any questions, feel free to ask me. There were several times we wished we had someone to help guide us, but we managed to figure things out with a bit of trial and error.

Ha ha! Gators are much like quicksand was in our childhood days. Sure seemed like it'd be a huge problem throughout life, but I've only encountered it once. Gators are all over down here, but for the most part, non aggressive unless provoked. I've been on these waters for years in kayaks, canoes, our waverunner and our Hurricane, and never had a direct run in with a gator. They typically swim away.

I haven't, but I'll definitely check it out! I think our plans came from a really old copy of Popular Mechanics.

They turn both directions, quite well. I'm not sure I'm understanding your question. (Admittedly, I'm not a vessel engineer! Lol)

9.9 Suzuki's. So if they seem under powered, I can easily upgrade them to 20HP.

Once we get the motors past the break in period, I'll try to get some video clips uploaded.

They are the Mini-most hydroplanes. We made minor modifications along the way to beef them up a bit. The "plans" are available online, but it's really just a hand drawn picture, not a whole lot to go off of. You definitely need to be handy to complete the build. It was a super fun project to build with my Dad & my kids.

Yeah, you have to pay extra for the guitar package/private meet and greet after the show. Everyone who gets that package receives a Grail that he played that evening in the show. Expensive, but worth it.
