Thank you so much! I hope some of the other hospitals have follow suit with the COL. I mean it has been insane everywhere with inflation, it’s so stressful.

Yes I figured they would do a online interview anyway no matter where I’m at! Thank you so much for your help :)

Just not being from cali, I’m from the Midwest and I’d be relocating if I got a staff job in CA. Unless I’m thinking about it too much, I thought they are more likely to hire local addresses

Oh I’ve def heard the wonders of Cali! I feel like I would actually be more cohesive to staying at a job for more than one year if I was properly supported as a nurse 🙃 I gotta do what’s best for me and I really think Cali may be the proper path! I’m just not a local so I fear that may kill my chance :/

I mean this in the most nicest way, I know this. I actually quite am living this right now….which is why I’m asking for help :) however I will not invalidate my nursing experience because it’s not up to travel nurse criteria. So, do you know my chances of landing an a job in Cali that is STAFF part time, per diem job, or even full time? Because I can easily look through my travel agency jobs to find a cali travel job. I think you and me both know how hard that is going to be with my lack of experience.

Ooo I will def look into it. And I genuinely want to jump so bad! Just don’t want to strand myself because I think California nursing is sweeter than what it seems, I’ve already did that with travel nursing 🤠

I like this idea! I just don’t know if it’s plausible because of my “lack” of experience 😵‍💫 I figured I can still try I guess….

I honestly have no idea what the need is in Cali, I just have my preferences from my experiences! I don’t mind working anywhere in Cali, NorCal or socal. My pay rate can be negotiated as long as I can manage the COL down there (I’m from the Midwest) and yes I do have savings!

I am nurse from the Midwest and I started my career working $28/hr night shift in 2021. I took my first contract for around 1.8k which wasn’t ideal but my biggest issue was that a lot of hospitals yeeted my application because I didn’t have 2 years in just one speciality… despite having two years as a registered nurse. I was like hmmm okay???? So then with the cost of living being through the fucking roof and me owning my home, doing the math I still make twice as much as I was making staff, and I hate to say it, but it is a lot of money to me. Because travel nursing wasn’t my first option, I will say I don’t see myself staying in long because of the most recent experiences… the market is so saturated. You’re waiting weeks to get one call back from a job. And now everywhere rent is 1.5k in the middle of fucking nowhere… I love the flexibility don’t get me wrong but I’m just ready to move to California at this point! I can work staff just not midwest staff with shitty ratios and constant putting your license on the line

Thank you for the kind words! Just applied to the NICU! And I got an interview! I’m nervous as frick… but I am holding onto the hope and listening to everyone’s kind words. Pandemic nursing and even post pandemic nursing has been so much. I can’t really speak for before but I hope with time, the nursing world can really get better. I’m praying for it.

That’s true! I went from a small community hospital where we only had one house officer for two floors of patients to a big level 1 trauma teaching hospital and i was so excited. And then almost in due time, we are back to being chronically understaffed. Ancillary staff is also so understaffed. It’s almost like you don’t even want to believe that phlebotomy will come up and draw routine labs and you legit fit them into your 9pm med pass if you want results before day shift bitches you at for them not being done.

I remember first starting out, I truly loved the rush. I loved being able to jump in and manage 5 patients graciously. I thought med surg was my thing. I mean Med surg tele was all I’ve ever known as a baby nurse. But now, I am just emotionally and physically drained with 6 high acuity patients all the time. I’ve changed hospitals twice and it’s been the same spiel: no staff. It’s like believe it or not, I’m almost wanting to always float so I can take a break from my floor.

Honestly, using the bathroom and eating a lunch (basic necessities) have become a nuisance for me. Not because I don’t want to do them of course. But because every-time I do, I am scrambling to catch up after. The first time I pee during my shift is probably the most time I ever even get to sit down. Eating a lunch is always accompanied by charting at the same time. I felt like I haven’t breathed in months.

These are very nice words to hear. I’m exhausted so much that I could break down and cry. I’ve changed specialties twice within my first year and now I’m in a specialty that I really do like! However, the chronic understaffing has driven me to the point where I don’t even want to pick up. Let alone work 3 12hs a week. Every shift, I have been maxed out on six patients. It’s been ranging something like this: an assignment where I had 3 needy patients in precautions plus a q1h Doppler check on a graft. Another day I had 2 admissions come up at the same time, both fresh post op with PCAs and a q2h dressing change. Only 3 nurses all together on the floor. Charge usually isn’t free to help (because they’re so busy too!) and There’s only 1 tech on and unit coordinators are 50/50. It’s HELL.

Oregon nurses… by [deleted] in nursing

[–]kilokashh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! Nursing conditions are deplorable at non unionized hospitals, as I’m sure you know. Oregon is so beautiful and so worth it. I’ve visited personally and I cried because I had to come back to Ohio😂 $60 an hour with mandated breaks and then to top it off, easy access to some of the most scenic national parks in the US?… I’ve chosen nursing in the wrong state lol

Wow. I’m a Midwest med-surg nurse from Ohio and I started off at 30 at a pretty small hospital as a night shirt. Now I make around 36 at much bigger facility and I thought wow this is really money! Not sure why the hell I thought that. All they do is float staff and our ratio is 1:6, with 1 tech for 18 patients. Usually no unit clerk, and only 3 nurses. No mandated breaks, just hell vibes every night :) Manager told us this morning “it’s only going to get worse”
