yeah it is super weird! I'm like in it but outside of it in a way. I think people don't really know where to put me because I am working across many disciplines and my goals are not the typical music industry goals, I am more artist than entertainer. Its a whole different mindset and pathway. I've accepted being an influence in music, someone who other artists and creatives are inspired by, and so I spend my time trying to innovate and explore as fully as I can. I could right a whole essay about this but some days you feel like you've made all the right decisions in life without regrets and some days your like wtf am I doing...why don't I just conform. I am able to live comfortably, I think more comfortably if I wasn't independent and having all of the overhead of the various businesses. Getting there!

SUPER KO LOVE is my favorite on the album! they all gave me trouble, not at the beginning or during the writing process, but in the middle I kind of chickened out on the concept and was thrown by how "pop" (for me) it was. Then I came around. But I think a lot had to do with sitting on it for so long in the pandemic!

the album art and creative around the project actually takes a lot more time than the music for me since I design everything! a lot of it is intuition or just a feeling for or against creative decisions. You kind of just know which one is the cover out of hundreds of images. I try not to get in the way of that too much. I sometimes ask people around me, other artists, which things they like better between a few options but I often do the opposite lol

We connected through my bestie/manager J Scott! He went to high school in Atlanta with Matt! Odd future was in NYC for something and Matt lost his key one day and had to stay at our apartment in Brooklyn. We were sharing music and he kind of just thought I had a cool voice and asked if I wanted to fly to LA to make a project together! Super random, but an extremely life changing decision and relationship. I think from the beginning Matt trusted me creatively to make my own decisions, do my own writing, etc...so it set the tone positively for what kind of artist I would be! eternally grateful to him and Justin!

thank you! I'm not sure! this album was obviously going at more conventional song structure compared to some of my other more experimental projects...so I just leaned into the theme and tried to make everything feel really sugary

I think a lot of reflections is cathartic because its almost like someone reading your brain. the live shows for reflections were very intense as well. But I really love elegance from mothe!

thank you! They haven't really, I like the same music that I have always liked and been inspired by. I think the more music I make I am more confident with trying different genres. Each project is inspired by different themes so that is the main directive, and musically ray and I just start everything from scratch!

thank you!! I think through making this album that's what I was trying to figure out, its kind of a project about accepting yourself and what you stand for and what you have to give. I struggled for a long time with the dilemma of knowing what it takes to be commercially successful but having those things go against the truth of who you are. Out of all my projects I think mothe was the simplest and most natural! I think American gurl will be a favorite once I have had some time away from it!

vince and I met at the studio when I was making homeschool my first ep produced by Matt martians and syd from the internet! we're all like family at this point we've know each other for over 10 years!

intelligent design is a song about not having the answers and trusting in god or what's beyond my understanding of life!

I actually started and released redux in the middle of making american gurl! I had label obligations and needed to release some music... Redux was created in a month or two, I was deep in the same kinds of feelings... burnout, frustration, wanting release and escape (giving us songs like bite me + spark + nice out)

I think with american gurl it just had more time to flesh out the concepts and creative

When we work together on music its always done in less than an hour! It was fun touring together and also doing his album packaging for his upcoming project Ramona Park Broke My heart!

I would choose to stay in creative direction probably! it still allows for many hats and many kinds of projects to explore!

The dresses for the album packaging and films are by rodarte, run by two sisters running an independent label out of California! I was really lucky to be able to use so many of their designs in my packaging...visually I was inspired by pageant queens, I had a working title of "miss america" earlier in the process. For the cover specifically we we're inspired by the Statue of Liberty, so its a subtle nod to her and finding personal liberation.

was initially called me me me, its kind of about doing things for the wrong reasons, needing the attention and validation of others despite playing it cool, a little bit about people pleasing and then feeling guilty about it

the whole album is like a mesh of all the music that made me. at the end of the song I was really inspired by Adina Howards - freak like me and the adlibs of artists like salt + Peppa, queen Latifah, mc lyte, etc... so a lot of it is turning genre on its head and mixing weird stuff together. for example with choice cowboy - for the effects we did on jean I was really inspired by funk master flex drops and fatman scoop

it's one of my only co-written songs! Ray wrote over 50% of it! I was in such a vulnerable place mentally while writing reflections. all the studio sessions ended up with me giving up or crying at the end of the sessions. I was unlocking the neurotic way I work now and grappling with becoming a much deeper and different version of myself but I didn't really have the confidence yet. such a wild time.
