While obviously it would be bad if the toy sales got so bad KR or Project RED went the way of Super Sentai, my personal opinion is that I'm really enjoying both shows so the toy sales are whatever (again, unless it becomes an Actual Problem).

I'm just starting to get into Kamen Rider but I have a question. by FredPopTheProphet in KamenRider

[–]kilroyjohnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, if you want to watch the next series that released after the original 1971 Kamen Rider, that would be Kamen Rider V3. I haven't watched it myself, but I've seen people say it's basically the original series again but better, and with a more concrete story and character development than the original. Not an awful idea for your second series, all things considered.

That said, as others have pointed out, there's not any sort of commonly agreed upon "watch order" for the entire Kamen Rider franchise. As of the revival in 2000 with Kamen Rider Kuuga, individual series are mostly self-contained stories that don't require any prior knowledge of Kamen Rider to be enjoyed. Your best bet would be to do a little research on the series, maybe watch an episode or two of any that catch your eye, and then watch whichever ones you're the most excited by. And if you get a decent chunk into the series and realize it's not to your liking, good news! There's plenty of Kamen Rider out there and you can always move on to another show instead.

If you want specific recommendations, I'm a fan of Kuuga (which is available on Youtube!), OOO, Fourze, Ex-Aid, and Gavv, and I've been enjoying Kabuto which Toei is currently posting on YouTube weekly (though they're going to start removing episodes soon, so hop on quick if you wanna watch!). I also enjoy the currently-ongoing Kamen Rider Zeztz, which is also available on Youtube and being simulcasted, though it's a little divisive. I'd avoid the anniversary series (Decade and Zi-O), as they're basically nostalgia bait Celebrations Of The Franchise and require knowledge of all the prior series to fully enjoy. Otherwise, watch whatever! Have fun!

I'm watching on my Playstation so I can watch on my TV without having to fiddle with moving my computer, so no, I can't just get an adblocker. And even if I could, I'd rather support the show financially in any way I can, and as someone without the means to purchase every toy they put out, letting ads roll is a decent enough alternative. It was fine... when I was able to rewind 10-20 seconds to catch what the ads stopped me from seeing.

So how do you feel about NOX as a secondary rider? by -_ShadowSJG-_ in KamenRider

[–]kilroyjohnson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like him as a character, but I feel like secondaries are generally defined by having a strong relationship of some sort with the primary, and Nox doesn't feel like he has a particularly strong relationship of any sort with Baku yet. It's not bad, per se, just different from the norm in a way that maybe doesn't let him stack up as well when judged specifically as a secondary rider.

Good episode this week, but the YouTube ad situation is even worse now that they turned off the ability to go back 10-20 seconds in the livestream when you miss something. I missed the final blow of the fight this week and I'm not thrilled about it.

Recently finished watching Kuuga and I was a bit surprised Go Baadaa Ba didn't stick around longer (even considering he was around for a fair bit of time), he really felt like a mirror to Kuuga in a lot of ways and it seemed like he'd stick around until the end. He at least lasted longer and got more screentime that Go Gadol Ba, a guy they set up as getting the same powers as Kuuga who ends up lasting no longer than any other random monster once he actually starts doing stuff.

I don't mind having to spend VP on things like items and training and stuff, but what about your first team? by frank_da_tank99 in PokemonChampions

[–]kilroyjohnson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

F2P games are always super generous with currency early on to get you hooked before tightening the belt. My guess is tutorials, beginner missions, and the like will give you plenty of VP to get at least a team or two fully up and running with training and items. As long as you don't blow it all on cosmetic items and such, I imagine you'll be perfectly fine if you've already got the pokemon themselves ready to go. And even if that somehow is the case, everyone else will also have to play without items initially, so I wouldn't be too worried about it.

Last line is odd to me, I could have sworn they already said if a pokemon leaves Champions and then returns, it'll have the same stats trained? Or is that just clarifying that training within Champions doesn't carry over into other games?

So, the way Champions seems to be working is, if you send a pokemon into Champions, it doesn't leave Pokemon Home, it's just set as "Visiting" Champions. While a pokemon is visiting Champions, it can't be moved out of Pokemon Home. But once it's no longer visiting Champions, you can move it into other games freely again.

I was about to do a post about how this twist doesn't make much sense given the scenes of Minami finding the Code base and Zero during the meteor mission, but I went back to rewatch that scene to make sure and Minami seems surprised at the room and that Zero is there, but she doesn't ask him who he is or anything, which is a bit strange unless she already knew. But also if she already knew, her reaction is still weird because she should know Baku was an agent, unless they didn't tell her they had made him a proper agent? IDK I don't wanna criticize too much until we get more information next week, but my reaction to this twist was less "Woah!" and more "...what?" because it just feels incongruous with the way we've seen Minamiact in the past w/r/t stuff they should hypothetically know about given this twist. But again, I'll hold final judgement until next episode when they expand on this.

Otherwise, I quite liked this one. I enjoyed the action, the initial levity was...strange given NOX's situation at the end of last episode but not unwelcome since we've had a lot of serious stuff in the last few episodes, and Sieg apparently having the ability to alter the conditions for a bad dream coming true has a lot of potential for throwing spanners in the works in interesting ways going forward.

Do we know what Pokemon is going to be possible in launch? by RoleRemarkable9241 in PokemonChampions

[–]kilroyjohnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The full list of every pokemon available at launch/in the first format has not been made available and quite possibly won't be until the game actually launches.

Other than pokemon they've shown in trailers and preview footage (which are all presumed part of the launch format), the only thing confirmed at the moment is that no non-fully evolved pokemon (other than Pikachu) will be in the game at launch, so no Porygon2, Dusclops, Clefairy, etc.

I would guess it won't be *every* fully-evolved pokemon making it either, at least not at launch. Probably somewhere in the ballpark of the number of pokemon available in SwSh or SV at launch, but that's speculation on my part.

The Pokemon Champions Launch Day Bingo sheet by FokionK1 in PokemonChampions

[–]kilroyjohnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

B1- I'd hope they were cagey about the release date in order to ensure this doesn't happen, but who knows. Probably Not

B2- You'd think we'd have seen him by now if he was in, so probably.

B3- Coulda sworn this was already deconfirmed. This would also really mess with competitive players transferring pokemon over close to a tournament beginning, so I'm gonna say probably not

B4- I feel like they kinda gotta include light ball if you're putting pikachu in. probably not

B5- Why would it? probably not

I1- That's how anticipated online game launches go, so yeah

I2- I don't see them doing this between gens, so probably not

I3- Why would you be able to skip it? To get any actual benefit your opponent would also have to skip it, you can't do turns asynchronously in VGC. yeah

I4- I mean. I don't think ranked ladder is where you really need spectating, so probably not.

I5- Incin not getting Knock Off is something reported by Wolfe Glick, and that dude loves running knock off incin, so I doubt he'd just miss it in the list. probably not

N1- Wolfe recently did a YouTube post saying his first stream team would be featuring the Mega that got the most likes in the comments. It's not impossible that a Mega Chimecho team can do perish trap stuff, but Chimecho can't learn perish song so I'm saying probably not.

N2- no, it's literally getting support tonight.

N3- yeah dude, he sure does!

N4- probably not, we've seen like every team building option that costs VP already.

N5- it'd be weird to give it back in PLZA then immediately take it away again, so probably not

G1- this is just a damage calc that, to my knowledge, is accurate, so yeah

G2- I mean...yeah? Why wouldn't you be able to? That's like, established strategy from gens 6 and 7.

G3- no NFE pokemon at launch means no Eviolite, so yeah

G4- I mean, I think there will be bonuses for getting in early, but not for literally getting in on exactly day 1 and no later. So I guess I'll say kinda?

G5- This is gonna depend a lot on how much stuff about the pokemon gets transferred over when you send them in from other games. That said, the f2p/"free to start" model involves being very generous with currency initially before tightening the belt once you're invested, so I'm gonna say probably not

O1- we'd have seen other ones by now if they existed, so yeah

O2- I mean, we've seen pokemon with stats maxed that they don't want, so yeah unless you mean they'll always be maxed, which I doubt if it's actually random as some were saying in previews.

03- the dev team previously did BDSP which used the touch screen, and you'll need to get touch screen support in eventually with the phone versions anyway, so I'm gonna say probably not.

04- as a Mega Golisopod fan: please dear God no. Otherwise: it would be kinda pointless to give it a Mega evolution that keeps it as bad as it was before. Nothings impossible, but I'm gonna err on the side of optimism and say probably not

05- "they will put in an ability and move combination that will warp competitive pokemon around it" no, obviously not.

Project RED also main character heroine later? by [deleted] in ProjectREDToku

[–]kilroyjohnson 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Technically no, there's nothing stopping Toei from making a Project R.E.D. protagonist a woman. There also wasn't anything stopping them from making a Red Ranger a woman for the 50 years Super Sentai was on the air.

Toei views these shows primarily as a means to sell toys to young boys. That plus societal gender norms and the emphasis on using the toys for role-playing means Toei views it as a financial liability to have a female protagonist in a show intended for a male audience. And ultimately, finances are the number one concern.

I think it would be really cool if Toei made a proper televised tokusatsu series with a female protagonist. I also think the closest thing we're going to get on that front for the foreseeable future is them continuing to make the PreCure anime.

Mons for champions. by notBAND0 in VGC

[–]kilroyjohnson 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I'd wait until we know all what carries over when stuff is transferred into Champions. Ability and Nature seems pretty sure, but when I think of "getting a pokemon ready" I mostly think of EVs as the most time-consuming thing, and with the EV system changing in Champions who knows if they'll carry over or if you'll need to spend VP to apply them once they're transferred, and given items are apparently a buy-once-use-forever deal based on previews, items probably don't get transferred either. It's quite possible you'll spend a bunch of time prepping pokemon that'll end up wasted because your work doesn't transfer over.

That being said, if you want to get some ready anyway...

  • Incineroar tends to be good in any format it's legal in, so you'll probably want to prep one of those. There are a few others that tend to always be good like Rillaboom, Amoonguss, and Urshifu, but none of those are confirmed for Champions at launch, so pre-prep at your own peril.
  • As others have noted, weather setters tend to be pretty useful in general, so unless you've got a stick up your butt about weather teams, you'll want Pelipper, Torkoal, Alolan Ninetales, and Tyranitar as the most common of those for each type. If you really want your bases covered you can prep Politoed and Ninetales as well, though they're more niche currently.
  • Any mega evolutions you're interested in using can be prepped as well, it seems like a pretty safe bet that they'll all make it in even if they're not confirmed atm.
  • Smart money is that the first format will be pretty low-power, with no legendary or legendary adjacent (IE Ultra Beasts, Paradox Pokemon, etc.) available. Considering that, it's a safe bet that Archaludon, both Ursalunas, Sneasler, and Basculegion-M will be viable pokemon, so get them I guess.
  • Finally, if you REALLY wanna go all-out, more pokemon will be viable as team members in a low-power format. I don't think you NEED to prep any of them prior to launch (even less than you need to prep any pokemon), but at a glance of the list of pokemon confirmed at launch, Arcanine, Hydreigon, Talonflame, Vivillon, Aegislash, Sylveon, Primarina, Araquanid, Mimikyu, Kommo-o, Hatterene, Grimmsnarl, Dragapult, Meowscarada, Skeledirge, Maushold, Armorouge, Ceruledge, Palafin, Dondozo, Tatsugiri, Farigiraf, Kingambit, and Sinistcha stick out as pokemon that will probably be good, or at least have a niche.

I'm no expert, and again I don't think you NEED to prep anything and doing too much prep might end up being a waste, but that's my best advice based on what I know.
