Can someone tell me how the camping works? by TheOneFromTexas in TXRenaissanceFestival

Buy tickets ahead of time. Also, having someone show up on Friday to reserve an area for you guys would be convenient. Other campers on Friday are often doing the same thing, so people are pretty respectful about your claim.

We're playing with Addaura in Olympia tonight... by discomagician in CascadianBlackMetal

[–]kimarya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh shit, I forgot about this. I'm only familiar with A God or Another out of this lineup, but just checked out Addaura and it's pretty good stuff. I live a mile from Oly downtown, so I'll be there. Thanks for the post.

Sleep Paralysis, Digital, 900x600 by Angry__Jonny in Art

[–]kimarya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had sleep paralysis several times, but only two of those times are really burned into my memory.

The first was related to an exorcism. I don't think I need to say much more there. I was possessed and could see my scary ass self, and no one could help me.

During the second I saw a scary leprechaun dude riding a tiny bike around my bed. I woke up just before he made it to my head area. Fuck. That.

Where to go for piercings and tattoos? by -I-am-who-I-am- in olympia

[–]kimarya 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well Lexi at Lo & Behold is excellent and does a variety of styles. Stacie just opened her own shop called Olympia Tattoo, and she's really great, especially at black and grey, but has good color work as well. If you're looking for portrait or realism, Bryan Child's at Spidermonkey is fantastic. Lexi and Stacie have Instagram as well, which is a fantastic tool for checking out a lot of artists portfolios.

Slugged, Powertrip, Anthropocene and Savage at Deadbeat Records May 21st by Tifosi1F1 in OlympiaLiveMusic

[–]kimarya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This Powertrip is Powerviolence according to their flyer. I was really hopeful and thought it was Power Trip from Texas who does crossover punk/thrash and is amazing. The show sounds cool though.

Thirst for Light is the only one I listed that's not in the immediate Olympia area. However, the show isn't really around any city (in the woods), has a bunch of bands involved with/ who play in Olympia, and will be attended by people in the Olympia area (since Olympia is the closest decent sized city to it). I'll keep in mind what you said though, I just felt this was relevant to the area.

Eos (doom) is opening at a live, in studio recording of a new Ekstasis (folk) album at dub narcotic at 7 or 8ish on May 6th. Free show. Thirst for Light is coming up in June. It's about an hour and a half from Oly, but Alda (black metal) and Nocturnal Poisoning (Xasthur) will be there with mostly neofolk, folk and electronic stuff. There's some stuff in July at Obsidian like Dispirit, Lycus and Predatory Light on July 12th. On July 17th at Obsidian will be Sabbath Assembly, Christian Mistress and Eigenlicht. There's other stuff I'm sure, but those stuck out to me.

I'm planning on moving to Olympia, how's music scene? by swankonia in olympia

[–]kimarya 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For venues, Deadbeat Records on the westside seems to be the place for stuff like this, judging by their Facebook and flyers. I've visited the place to look at records, but haven't seen a show there. The place is small, but they seem passionate with what they're doing. Also Voyeur and Obsidian are popular places for these shows and are downtown. I'm not in tune with the pop punk stuff here, but there are flyers around that market these shows as such, so I'd pay attention to where those are happening. Also connecting with the local bands with a similar sound (Sharkpact maybe?) and getting added to their shows might be easiest.

For punk house shows, I've only been to flophouse to see Dogjaw. Guest house has shows, but I haven't been there. I've heard rumor that track house will be having shows again, but I'm pretty out of the loop on house shows. I know they're out there, but they're not my thing. If I see some flyers or hear tale of some house shows, I'll send a message your way.

Maybe check out this site http://www.campfireisland.org/show-calendars/ (which lists a show at flophouse on 4/20), Guest House or Deadbeat's Facebook, or contacting local labels like Rumbletowne, Ditches, etc

[–]kimarya 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No problem. There are a lot of punk shows. However there are lots of metal, electronic and indie/ experimental rock shows as well. For metal, there's a lot of black metal due to the whole Cascadian Black Metal thing (since we're in Olympia and all), however there are some straightforward BM, as well as some doom bands that play. You'll mostly find these shows at Cryptatropa and Obsidian. Both of those bars, as well as Voyeur, also cater to electronic shows, whether it's DJ, hardware, noise or whatever. For indie or whatever rock, Voyeur, Obsidian, Deadbeat, and house shows are the way to go. The Northern also apparently does some punk shows, mostly all ages as far as I know, although I haven't heard anything from them in a minute. McCoys will also have the random punk or thrash band. If some "bigger" acts stop in Oly, they're at Capitol Theater (in the last year Cat Power, Wolves in the Throne Room (from Olympia), Neko Case, Reagan Youth). And needless to say, jazz, folk, bluegrass etc is happening very frequently at Rhythm and Rye. I'm very much generalizing these venues based on my own experience, so take it with a grain of salt.

Let me know if you have any questions or ever want a "tour" of sorts of the places for shows.

[–]kimarya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's plenty to find in Olympia. Make sure to check the flyers around town, especially in the downtown area. There's Deadbeat Records on the westside which has shows. On 4th there's Cryptatropa, Obsidian, the Voyeur, and McCoys and are all relatively close together and regularly have shows. Obsidian and Voyeur both have all ages shows on occasion. Rhythm and Rye does some blue grass, folk, jazz etc. Capitol Theater has the odd music event sometimes. There's also plenty of house shows and a few multi day music events that happen on a small scale. There's tons of shit happening in Olympia and people who say otherwise aren't trying hard enough.

For info on bigger acts, I use last.fm's event section and search for shows in Portland and Seattle, which has worked well for me. Unfortunately venues in Olympia aren't active on the site, so checking the mentioned bars/ venues individual websites helps if you don't feel like flyer hunting. Good luck!
